Seeing SFT's post about favorite tv themes got me thinking about my favorite cartoons as a kid and the themes from those shows that I loved hearing then and I still do today.

A few weeeks ago a friend and I were talking about toys from when we were kids. Then we started talking about action figures and great shows and cartoons from back in the late 70's and early 80's that we love so much.We then started complaining about how they dont make toys, cartoons and tv shows like they used to. Then the conversation turned to how we loved to get up in the morning to watch those great cartoons.Whether they were brand new ones or older cartoons like The Jetsons,Scooby Doo, The Flintstones or Tom and Jerry. The themes were something the both of us remembered and we started humming different ones to see if either of us could guess what show the music was from.

So I thought I would see what everyone else watched as a kid and what was your favorite cartoon theme? And do you still remember the themes from the shows and find yourself humming or singing them from time to time,or is that just me?

My fav's cartoons and themes are:

    Inspector Gadget
    Transformers
He-Man and the Masters of the Universe

    G.I. Joe
    M.A.S.K.
    Smurfs
    Go-Bots
    Thundercats
    Robotech

How old are you Matthew? All of the ones you mentioned came on about the time I stopped getting up early on Saturday morning.

I think the last cartoon I got up early for (or just taped it) was Beetlejuice, and even that was on way after the ones you mentioned.

I'll definitley hum the Beetlejuice theme TO THIS DAY!!! (Begins humming)

When I was a kid SCOOBY DOO was the sh*t!!!
I also remember DYNO-MUTT!!! MIGHTY MAN AND YUCK!! FANGFACE!!! CAPTAIN CAVEMAN!!! I just recently had a conversation witha friend of mine as to what the hell was the actual appeal of Captain Caveman. It escapes me today.
I absolutely loved JONNY QUEST (the show that is). I loved the adventures and something about the animation was different enough from the other cartoons that lent a certain "realism" to it.

I remember liking Filmations BATMAN a little back when they did TARZAN AND LONE RANGER as well. I never really like the STAR TREK cartoon; I guess I just didnt "buy" it like the real series.

ALL STAR LAFF-OLYMPICS was another fave. And I NEEDED to watch the MIGHTY HEROES!!!!!CuckooMan, DiaperMan et al. I still dig the opening theme to the MIGHTY HEROES.

Of course all of the SCHOOLHOUSE ROCK stuff. Who knew I was learning and singing at the same time? "Lolly lolly lolly..."

SPEED BUGGY was great and I just heard the theme song the other day and its still fantastic.

The themes from those days that I still hum as well from time to time also come from the SID AND MARTY KROFFT live action shows.
ELECTRAWOMAN AND DYNAGIRL, DOCTOR SHRINKER and WONDERBUG were my faves. They have really jazzy snazzy themes!!!

Well thats it for now, maybe I'll remember more later.

I have quite a bit of favorite cartoon themes. But, unless you're an avid watcher of the Cartoon Network, a lot of people might be unfamiliar with them:

Ed, Edd & Eddy by Patric Caird (love that whistling!)
Tiny Toon Adventures (music) by Bruce Broughton
Batman: the Animated Series by Danny Elfman
(a side note: years ago, when the show was on Fox and it eventually became known as "The Adventures of Batman & Robin", Shirley Walker wrote a wonderful theme which was an expansion on her own Batman theme).

Didn't Broughton also do the Animaniacs theme?

Don't forget Mancini's Pink Panther theme. It's one of the hippest compositions ever used in a cartoon! (even though it first appeared in the movie)

SBD: Would you happen to know if the animated BATMAN theme is available online - in either mp3 or realaudio-format? If not, is anyone out there capable of making one for me (assuming you have the compilation with the theme, of course)? Thanks.

Al - No, Richard Stone did the Animaniacs theme. His story goes like this: he composed a few episodes of "Tiny Toon Adventures" (then again-- J.McNeely, D. McCarthy, M. Stevens, L. Rosenthal, W. Ross-- who didn't?)
He later went on to do the theme and episode scores for "Taz-Mania". After that "Animaniacs". Then came a number of shows in succession: "Pinky and the Brain" (great theme!), "Freakazoid!" (ditto), "Road Rovers" and, currently, "Histeria!". A query, though: is this the same Stone who did those films SUNDOWN and PUMPKINHEAD?

One of my favorite cartoons in recent memory was Disney's Gargoyles. Not only did it have a cool theme, but the show itself was extremely well-written & produced. It had running storylines that composed multiple episodes, as well as characters that became more complex as time went on. That, plus a very cool Lex Luthor-type villain, Zanatos, made this show a must-see. Just as an aside, it was also the home for out of work Star Trek actors. Regulars were Johnathan Frakes and Marina Sirtis. Guests included Brent Spiner, Nichelle Nichols, Colm Meany, Avery Brooks, David Warner, plus many others I can't think of right now. I think Disney channel is running this show occasionally. Highly recommended.

I ask again: Does anyone know how to get hold of the BATMAN - THE ANIMATED SERIES theme online? Or knows how to do make a mp3 or something? It was available on a compilation a while back (Silva's DEFENDERS OF JUSTICE????)

And if that same someone knows how to get PERVERSIONS OF SCIENCE as well, that would be superb! Thanks.

A release of some of the background score from the first two seasons of The Transformers would be excellent!

Wasn't there a rumour about this going around a couple of months ago?

This is relatively arcane ... but I always liked the scores for the third version of TOM & JERRY (following the 1940s version and a very strange, blockily animated early-60s TV version.) Chuck Jones directed these, and even as a kid, I noticed that he was very careful as to WHICH of his house composers to use, depending on the nature of the cartoon ... he always went with Dean Elliott when he wanted something huge and exciting, and turned to Eugene Poddany for the more delicate, eccentric stuff. I still remember being jazzed at hearing Elliott's knockoff version of THE MAN FROM UNCLE.

NP: CAPRICORN ONE (OST version) (ooh, the helicopters are coming!)

SBD- thanks for the info. I didn't know McNeely and Rosenthal had done some scoring duties for "Tiny Toon Adventures." It's new news to me!

NP: Goldsmith's "Contract on Cherry Street"
