So two of the most anticipated scores have arrived and so have the movies they live in. The Patriot score which has been generally been recieved with raves and The Perfect Storm which has been received with classic polorization and controversy as befits a new James Horner release.

What is next and which score (s) do you expect will rock the house and give these two scores a run for their money?

On my radar screen Hollow Man looms as large as one of those Independence Day flying suacers. I'm also very intrigued by what Kamen will deliver for X-Men.

Hi Hal. I saw the previews to The Legend of Beggar Vance today directed by Robert Redford and staring Will Smith and Matt Damon. It looked interesting, and I noticed that the credits listed Rachel Portman. I'm looking forward to hearing that score, provided that Redford doesn't DUMP her score as he did Bernstein's and Barry's. I always want to hear a Goldsmith score, so I'll see The Hollow Man, but I can't imagine this movie, due to its subject, having a melodic score, which I prefer. But I can hope that it will have action themes like his Rambo series.

Redford must be a little sick if he's working with Will Smith and Matt Damon. I can't imagine why anyone would want them in their movie.

Who's in The Hollow Man anyway? I've read practically nothing about this film.

Hollow Man has Kevin Bacon and Elizabeth Shue in it. and a few people I couldn't remember seeing before.

Looks pretty interesting, if graphic in several ways.

Hollow Man isn't boasting any major box office muscle. Kevin Bacon is the lead character and Elizabeth Shue co stars. The real billing clout of the film will probably be the director, Paul Verhoeven and the reportedly creepy special effects.

The marketing blitz hasn't yet started for the movie (it open August 4th) so all the buzz has been limited to the on-line movie sites. According to advance screenings the movie will feature some very disturbing and graphic scenes (we are talking Verhoeven after all) that will no doubt stir some controversy.

And no, I wouldn't expect anything remotely warm and melodious about this score. I'm expecting, indeed counting on, a very dark and gritty rock-em, sock-em, action/suspence treatment in the music.

The Hollow Man is gonna surprise a few people and may be the summer's best kept secret. No doubt there will be a killer Jerry Goldsmith score, to be released on Varese on July 25th (A Shameless Plug!!) hehehe Anyway, What Lies Beneath looks like an intriguing movie and is worthy of my attention thanks to Harrison Ford, Michelle Pfeffier and Robert Zemeckis. There's The Klumps:Nutty Professor 2 which should feature another fun David Newman score. The football comedy The Replacements starring Keanu Reeves and Gene Hackman featuring a score in the mold of Little Giants by John Debney.

Rachel Portman is scoring Legend of Bagger Vance Wow!! That's surprising. I thought after their brilliant collaboration on Horse Whisperer, that Thomas Newman would be scoring it. Ah, well.

What is this Legend of Bagger Vance?

    sounds like a cheesy western.

The Legend of Beggar Vance "appears" to be about a man who takes up golf in the 1920's. Can't hit a thing until Will Smith finds him and teaches him golf. And he becomes his caddy. Looks like a "meaningful" movie about overcoming obstacles and challenges in life with golf being a metaphor and Smith the ultimate guru or teacher.

THE HOLLOW MAN is practically the only movie of the summer I'm actually looking forward to, and it's not because it has a Goldsmith score (that's an incidental here).

This seems to be rather a bleak season this year. One can only hope for the odd "sleeper" like THE SIXTH SENSE. (I really expected that picture to be absolute garbage when I saw the trailers last year. Who knew.)

NP: THE MUMMY (did this come out last year? I should look at the copyright notice. Who wrote it? Does it say?)

Actually, what IS The Hollow Man? I never heard what it's about. Of course, I'm looking forward to hearing the score.

I believe it's a variation on The Invisible Man.
