Will, it is still June, but I'll post here anyway so you can all read my wonderful words of wisdom for a whole month:

Just got, at the supermarket, amongst the fruit and veg, THE GREEN MILE (Thomas Newman). My first Tom CD! Have just put it on, though I still prefer to wear T-shirts. Not the best way to hear a score on first listen: I much prefer lying on the bed, but it's Friday and the board had to be seen.

Anyway, I like what I hear. Don't know how it'll all hang together over an hour and a quarter, but it's nice to hear real everyday instruments like the bowed travelling guitar and the Vietnamese banjo amongst things like the "tonut", the "drones" and the "saz".

Oh, that mouse music on track 4 is really like Goldsmith's Mrs Dingbat music from Gremlins! By the way, how can they get away with calling tracks "Billy-Be-Frigged" and "Shine My Knob"?

What can I say Graham, Newman is an eccetric composer much like Christopher Young. See the Speices promo which has a cue called "Milky Way Breasts". hehehe.

    Anyway I've gotten these scores:

    The Patriot (John Williams)
    The Perfect Storm (James Horner)
    Relative Values (John Debney)
    The Adjuster (Mychael Danna)
    To Die For (Danny Elfman)
    Girl, Interrupted (Mychael Danna)
    Peyton Place (Franz Waxman, Varese)
    The Satan Bug (Jerry Goldsmith)
    Hoosiers (Jerry Goldsmith)
    Patch Adams (Marc Shaiman)
The Return of The Pink Panther (Henry Mancini)
An Ideal Husband (Charlie Mole, WOW!! What an excellent score)
What Did You Do In The War, Daddy (Henry Mancini)
    Mr.Lucky Goes Latin (Henry Mancini)
Where The Heart Is (Mason Daring)
The Clan Of The Cave Bear (Alan Silvestri)
    Introducing Dorothy Dandridge (Elmer Bernstein)
    Melrose Place Jazz (Various artists)
Evil Dead 2 (Joseph LoDuca, original TER version)
    The Mask (Randy Edelman)

Don't remember if I posted these but here goes...

    1. Dinosaur (Howard---very good!)
    2. A History of Horror (Silva-interesting, bought it because the store mispriced it for $13)
    3. Waterworld (Howard)
    4. Patriot (Williams)
    5. Peyton Place (Waxman, Varese--this is wonderful!!!!!!)
    6. Cheyenne Autumn (North, cut-out bin Label X...thought these were deleted) and if you live in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area, there were at least 3 others there along with "The Magnificent Ambersons"--which I picked up a few months ago.

Looking forward to the Jaws reissue, Marnie, Coma/Logan's Run, and I might just break down and get that 2-disc Fried set at FSM--mostly for the Caligari score.

Re. The Green Mile. No, for me it wasn't meaty enough for the long running time, though I might change my mind after a few more listens.

And of course the mouse music isn't at all like Goldsmith's Mrs Dingleberry theme from Gremlins: it's like the second part of the main titles (the establishing scene of the streets?), all jaunty plucked strings. I think.

Couldn't find The Patriot here (I think I shouldn't be angry; after all, I already have Jaws exp. ), so instead I picked up:

    • Presumed Innocent (Williams)
    • Variations on a theme by Robert Schumann...err...Willow (Horner)
    • Romeo & Juliet (Prokofiev; London Symphony Orchestra/André Previn) - The soundtrack CDs where not as expensive as usual, but this one is a 2CD set and cost less than the scores; Movie Music is really overpriced.

    NP: Willow

    A PATCH OF BLUE (Goldsmith)
    AMAZING STORIES (Williams and Delerue)
VERTIGO (Herrmann, but this is the OST conducted by Muir Mathieson. I ordered the Joel McNeely version, dammit! But, sigh, I guess I would've wanted both eventually anyway ... it turns out that the Varese OST is an hour long, so I don't feel TERRIBLY cheated. Oh, the culprits who sent me the wrong one are Amazon, by the way. Their service is fast, though, I have to give em that.)

Well, I bought a LP (GSF 1006) of Breakheart Pass and did my first transfer to CD (I'm not willing to wait for Ryko's "maybe" CD)... It turned out good, except the record was only 28.5 minutes. Because of the short length, I feel like I should put a red spline on it.

I also just purchased the FSM "Rio Conchos." Hopefully later in the month I'll be able to pick up those new Goldsmith Chapter III releases, and at the end of the month, HOLLOW MAN!

I'm not sure if you've read the 50 other postings regarding Breakheart Pass, but there is a complete bootleg of the score that has PERFECT SOUND and runs about 45 minutes or so. Go seek that one out! Enough with the terrible-sounding record!

    Thanks for the comments, Shaun!

The record does sound pretty horrible. When listening to it, there is noticable hiss... I could hear the hiss start and stop at the begining/end of each cue, with complete silence in between. The overall sound "quality" of this album made me think I was listening to a 78rpm record

Another thing about the record that amused me was that the cue "Steam Rollin'" (and the "Main/End Title" theme) is included on the record twice. The second version of "Steam Rollin'" is quite similar, but about 20 seconds longer than the first...

My only problem with the bootleg is that I really don't want to spend a lot of money for this on the "collectors market," and I really don't have much of a collection to trade with others.

Come on Ryko, release this already!

    - Jon

The Perfect Storm; Horner: Haven't listened to it yet, but it's got a nice cover.

Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves; Kamen: I'm very pleased with this one. Top stuff!

Memphis Belle; Fenton: Haven't heard it all yet, but what I have has impressed me.

Ricochet; Silvestri: I dunno, this one was just there and it was cheap, so I got it. Haven't listened to it yet, but (sarcastically) it's got an ICE-T song on it, so it must be good.

The Interview; Hirschfelder: This was a great film, and from what I remember, the score was good too, but I'll pop this on later.

Sphere; Goldenthal: I don't get what people have against this score, sure it may not be to everyone's taste, but it worked in the film. I think this CD is a gem, I love it.

Green Card; Zimmer: It said Hans Zimmer on the front.....so I bought it.

The Dead Again DVD arrived. This was the first Branagh movie I ever watched, and also the first Doyle score I noticed (I had seen Carlito's Way before, but didn't really notice it's score until I had gotten into Doyle's other work). I've never seen it since, but both movie and score impressed me enough to instantly start looking for more Branagh and Doyle works.

Actually, I wanted to take the chance and order Horner's Brainstorm as well, after reading some urgent recommendations in another thread. But for some weird reason, this one CD would have nearly doubled the shipping costs, so I ordered City Hall instead.

I've only received 3 scores so far but I'm very impressed with Patrick Doyle's score to "East-West". This particular cd wasn't high on my list of purchases but the theater where I work received the movie. Fell in love with it right away.

    East-West
Richie Rich- FIRST FEW TRACKS DRIVE ME NUTS
In Pursuit of Honor/ Class of '61 (Debney Promo) SOUNDS LIKE SOMETHING WILLIAMS WOULD DO AND IT'S NICELY DONE

    NP-- East-West ****/*****

TORA! TORA! TORA! (Jerry Goldsmith) (FSM original soundtrack version)

THE OMEN (Jerry Goldsmith) (expanded, complete, additional cues)

MUSIC FROM THE FILMS OF VAL LEWTON (Roy Webb) (this was a present, I'd never have bought it for myself, but it's pretty good)

okay some of the new stuff I gots:

    Patton DVD
Tora! Tora! Tora!<-- hearing this in the the trailer (which is on the Patton DVD) is just weird; FSM CD

Marian, do you have the recent Robert Levinson completion of the Mozart Requiem?
Performed by the Boston Baroque, if I'm not mistaken. It's a very interesting listen, and more faithful to Mozart's vision than Sussmayer's pillaging. (But I admit I DO like Sussmayer's version of the Lacrimosa).

    Mail Order:

    TORA! TORA! TORA!

    Bargain Bin:

    BASIC INSTINCT
    MULAN
    PETER GUNN

Jaws - Nice selection of extras

I didn't even know there was a restoration. In fact, I wasn't aware that it was entirely clear WHICH parts of the Requiem were composed by Mozart and which by Süssmayer (who doesn't even get credit on the CD ).

I always thought that Sussmayr's work more or less began after the Lachrymosa (forget the movement that follows), and that everything up to that point (Introit, Dies Irae, Tuba Mirum, Rext Tremendae, Confutatis, Lachrymosa) had been more or less fully written out by Mozart. I admit I haven't bought any of the several recent scholarly works on the Requiem, so I realize I could be wrong. In any case, I never thought of Sussmayr's work as "pillaging;" rather, I thought it a competent elaboration of fragmentary sketches. Maybe the scholarship says otherwise . . . Anyway, I find that with that Mozart work as with no other I have very varying reactions to different recordings. And that's not surprising: while it's a work of genius, it's an uneven work, with each movement reflecting a different atmosphere.
