Only this year have I really started hearing and buying his work, but huh, you know, I think this guy is my fave composer? Beautiful work he does, I can't fault him.

I agree totally. He is probably my favorite or second favorite composer right now, and has been since "Shawshank Redemption". In fact, "Shawshank Redemption" was the first score I bought, so I owe alot to Newman.

    Fav T. Newman: Shawshank
    Second Fav: Little Women
    Third Fav: Horse Whisperer

NP: Snow Falling On Cedars ****/5

Little Women, a gorgeous score. You should really buy.
One problem I have with Newmann, which really isn't his fault, but the majority of his clues are very short.

    Hi there!

I don't know him so well, only got Unstrung Heroes and The War and I didn't listen to them for quite a while. but now I will.

please allow me one stupid question: does anyone remember the family relations of the Newman-Clan? Alfred, David, Thomas and Randy... is there another?

    Floyd.

They're all part of the Newman clan...Randy, Thomas, David, and Alfred Newman.

I LOVE Thomas Newman's work. Don't know why, but his scores are ALWAYS beautiful and powerful in a very subtle way (does that makes sense?) Meet Joe Black is definitely my fave of his. But I also love Little Women, The Horse Whisperer, Scent of a Woman, The War, and The Shawshank Redemption. The Green Mile is OK, but not great. One score of his that is REALLY growing on me (and too bad the film doesn't match up) is How to Make an American Quilt. Virtually every theme on that CD is absolutely breathtaking. Hope he wins an Oscar someday. It might happen for American Beauty (not his best work, but pretty decent otherwise.) Too bad it couldn't have been for MJB though.

He is a great "new" voice in Hollywood. Sometimes not easy listening, but composed brilliants scores, such Little Women (his best, for me), American Quilt Meet Joe Black,Flesh and Bone...
He is really good, an honor to his family,no doubt!

Well Floyd, lets see if I get this right.

Alfred Newman is of course the oldest and the famous one who-of course passed away eons ago-and was one of the great ones during Hollywoods heyday. Now David and Thomas Newman are brothers and Randy is their cousin. I know Alfred was Randy's uncle or great uncle. I'm not too sure if Alfred was the uncle or the father or great-uncle to Thomas and David.

I thought there was another Newman, not so famous but yet involved in the music business and also a brother of Davie and Thomas, but I could be wrong.

    That's all I know.

Scott: Thanks a lot. I knew they belonged all together but I didn't know about the details...
I really prefer Alfred's work, he really is master of the house (How the West was won: *****), and I like David's scores (although I was disappointed by Critters), but I have never really got an interesting score by Randy. his composing seems more entertaining than original (to be honest I easily get bored by his music, e.g. Dragonheart, Daylight or Dragon... *sorry to all those randy newman fans out there...)

Uhm...Floyd...Randy EDELMAN composed Dragon, Dragonheart, and Daylight. Not Randy NEWMAN, eben though I do agree with your assessment on these three scores.

    Yeah Floyd, buddy,
you are talking about Randy Edelmann who can write some nice themes but who's orchestrations are rather bland and always the same.
Some scores from Randy Newmann: Avalon (lovely score), The Natural (very lovely score), Toy Story (one and two), Maverick, A bugs Life.

Well, folkes, of course you are right, I mixed things up a bit, sometimes I am a bit confused, sorry for that!
But, you know, some of them maestros really have quite similar names such as randy edelman (and cliff eidelman who composed that lovely score to star trek: the undiscovered country) and randy newman, laurence rosenthal and leonard rosenman, then goldsmith and goldenthal, victor young and christopher young, all right all right I think I will never mix up things with goldsmith, but since I really don't know the randys so well...
of randy newman I actually only know James And The Giant Peach (was that right??? I think it was)

anyway, I only wanted to check if you really read this stuff I am posting.... geeeee...

I know you'll be polite, thanks,
    Floyd.

    Gentlemen,

Two other Thomas Newman scores well worth looking into. If you liked LITTLE WOMEN, you should like OSCAR AND LUCINDA, a wonderful, largely overlooked piece of work.

On the quirkier side, no real themes in it but full of Newman's trademark oddball instrumentation, is THE PLAYER.

I was very happy when Newman, after years of being ignored, scored double Oscar nominations for LITTLE WOMEN and THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION -- very few composers (mostly John Williams, to date) ever receive that honor. It was as if the nominating board were acknowledging how wrong they were to overlook him all those years.
