I thought I would start a string about my Favorite Film Composer, James Newton Howard, to see what you all think of him. I think he is one of the most under-rated film score composers around. When peope talk about great film composers they mention Williams, Horner and Goldsmith (not to take anything away from these great artists) I just figured, why not talk about Howard for awhile.

My favorite all time score is Waterworld by JNH. I also really like The Postman, Wyatt Earp and The Fugitive. Here is a list of the James Newton Howard scores that I own, can anyone tell me about any that aren't on my list and if they are good.

    Waterworld
    The Postman
    Wyatt Earp
    The Fugitive
    Diggstown
    Outbreak
    Off Limits
    Intersection
    Alive
    The Man In The Moon
    Dying Young
    The Devil’s Advocate
    The Saint of Fort Washington
    Primal Fear

    Thanks a lot,
    Audacity
N.P. The Postman, JNH the man

Audacity, I have to say I,m impressed with your James-Newton Howard collection!! You've got more than are listed in my soundtrack catologue!!! I own Waterworld which is also one of my favourites...the only other one I have is "Dying Young" which is quite a nice "mellow score". Maybe you could tell me which of his other scores are similar/ or good as "Waterworld" as I'd like to buy some more of his scores! Thanks. Gae

Call me crazy, but I thought his theme for Dante's Peak was a good listen. I remember being at Future Shop, back in the good ol' days when they had the listening bar (back in the good ol' days when they were'nt going out of business), I remember having them play Dante's Peak, and I noticed that after the theme song.. everything else sounded like utter crap.

Matt, the theme of "Dante's Peak" is by Howard. He left the movies due to schedule problems, Frizzel then took it over but worked with that Howard-theme.

Audacity, nice Howard collection! I miss "Grand Canyon" (mostly uninteresting pop stuff, some good orchestral material and a great fanfare at the end), "Dave" (charming romantic comedy score), "Falling Down" and "Flatliners" (good choral stuff).

"Waterworld" is a fantastic action score, "Wyatt Earp" has great, great themes, "The Fugitive" includes some impressive action writing, "Intersection" is a very pleasant listerning experience and a great ambient score and "Devil's Advocate" is just sounding marvellous.

In my opinion "The Postman" is not that powerful and "Outbreak" is a quiet uninspired and weak score.

But the man has a good variety in his works and usually writes in a powerful musical language.

The only thing I have by Howard is the theme to "ER." But I really like it. Especially the extended version.

    Gae,

WATERWORLD in my opinion is definitely Howard's best score. Although WYATT EARP is surely worth a listen also. It is an awesome score and I think Howard's second best. Not quite as action laden as WATERWORD, it has more slow romantic type tracks. If you like the loud action themes of WW then you need to check out THE POSTMAN. Only half of the CD is Howard's score, but it sounds a lot like the WW score in the themes and instruments Howard used. THE FUGUTIVE is also a must have Howard score. I recently got the Expanded PROMO of THE FUGUTIVE and although the sound quality is not that good it is a great addition to my JNH collection. The widely released score definitely has the best of the score on it though. Over the weekend I finally found the score to DAVE. I have been looking for that score for a long time, I found it at a used store for only $5.99. It is a great slower/romantic score from JNH.

Gae, I hope this and everyone else's replies help you to expand your JNH colleciton.

He also did the theme to LIar LIar which Debney basically composed his score of.
    FAvorites:
    Water World
    POstman
    Wyatt Earp
OUtbreak ( expanded version is sorley needed, most of the great action cues are missing from the poor Varese release which is only 30 minutes long (as almost all the time) )

Howards best score is The Fugitive. No doubt about it.

My favorite JNH score is Alive. The main theme that runs throughout it IMO is quite emotional.

Like many other composers James Newton Howard has composed some incredible music that never got released. I am in search of any of his music that either did not get released or got a very limited release. What I am most interested in are the scores to Flatliners and Major League. If anyone has these scores I would love to buy CD-R copies or trade for copies of them. E-mail me and let me know, I have some rare scores as well as some promos that I would be willing to trade.

    Let me know,

I am beginning to begin to like his scores, and he is fast becoming one of my favorite composers. The Postman, The Sixth Sense, Snow Falling on Cedars, all really good scores that I love. I need to get into some of his older stuff, any ideas?

    Kyp,

You need Waterworld, that's a given. Snow Falling on Cedars sounds a bit like the slow music in Waterworld and the action music in Waterworld is the best Howard has composed, if you like The Postman you will love Waterworld. Grand Canyon is another great scores by Howard, it has an urban type beat. Wyatt Earp is one of the best modern western scores ever written, beautiful themes. The Fugitive and Outbreak have some great music on them also.

not many people like his score for The Sixth Sense?

I have really gotten into his score for The Man in the Moon lately. excellent stuff.
quite a lot of short cues, but worth it for the Graveyard cut.
