There have been lots of movies based on comic books and strips; some of them do well, some of them fail miserably. But they *usually* contain some pretty good scores. So, what are some of your favorites?

I think the two "givens" here are Superman and Batman. It seems to be unanimous among us that these are two magnificent scores. And to any moviemusic.com users who happen to go by their initials and live in Denmark, Batman is the greatest score ever composed. Well, I don't go that far, but I do think it's Elfman's best work after Sommersby and Edward.

Another of my favorites is the apparently little-known stupendous gem The Phantom by David Newman. This is a GREAT score. I recommend it to everyone, especially Goldsmith fans.

There are others, of course, but I'll let you list them.

P.S. My thanks to Aaron Collins for giving me the idea for the topic.

P.P.S. SFT: I meant no offense, it's supposed to be in good humor. I'm sorry if I sounded like I was mocking you, that's not really what I was trying to do.

Actually, I´m kind of stuck between Batman and Edward Scissorhands.

Was´nt Dick Tracy based on a comic strip?

Edward Scissorhands was based on a comic book???

I assume the topic is about "Scores that came from movies that are based on comic books"...
...I nominate "Akira" and "Ghost in the Shell".

Also, does anybody know if the score to "The Crow" is any good? (I'm assuming "The Crow" is based on a comic book, though I'm not sure...)

I'd have to say BATMAN and Superman.

    Sean,
THE CROW is based on a comic book, a very dark and sad one, I might add. The score of the movie, by Graeme Revell, reflects this attitude very well. Very gothic, with a mix of strings, drums and guitars.

    Sean,

I was referring to James´comment about me thinking that Batman is the greatest score ever.

Edward Scissorhands was not based on a comic book.

The Crow is my fav. Dark, depressing, and action packed. Just like the movie, hehe. Coincidentally, The Crow is one of the best movies to be based on a comic book.

Blade also has a good score.

Yes, John Williams and Danny Elfman mastered two of our most popular icons and made the melodies unforgettable.

I agree with the part on Judge Dredd....the score was pretty good, and I am probably the only person on Earth who thought the movie was pretty good. So it was a double plus for me.

Now, if there were only scores to Green Arrow and Green Lantern....obscure heroes who ruled in the 70s. I can already sense a Robin Hood-like soundtrack for Green Arrow....hearing Kamen's score in my head already.

Now, thinking back, there isn't that many superhero movies after all! I mean, we hear about superheroes being made into movies, but most of them don't even have scores!! Somewhat like the genre of Sports movies....With the upcoming Mystery Men, I actually think Smash Mouth's "All Star" suits the tone of the movie very well, it could even be the theme of Mystery Men.

The Crow is really good. And I can't wait tell "X-Men." I hope that who ever does it used lots of themes.

Well, Superman is of course just phenominal. Batman is very good.
Another great score that is underrated due to the lackluster performance of the film itself is Jerry Goldsmith's "Supergirl". Awsome score.
Dick Tracy was also based on a comic book and the score by Elfmann was pretty good if I recall right.

Good choice on Judge Dredd and The Phantom, two very good scores.

The Crow is beautiful and haunting at times, very good. Also, after viewing my Mystery Men DVD a few times, I think I'd say the score to that plays pretty well too!

Definately "Batman" (Elfman's film and Shirley Walker's animated ones).

    The original "Superman."

But other than "Batman," I really love Goldsmith's score for "The Shadow." (Based on a radio show, but there was a comic version. Still count?) Just wished I could my hands on an expanded version.

Best scores based on comic books? What are we.......kids? By the way
    1) Superman
    2) Supergirl
    3) Danny Elfmans theme for "The Flash"
    4) Batman
    5) The Rocketeer
Plus I am hoping for a brilliant score for the upcoming Spiderman movie. (OK, so I am a kid)
