Knowing how Jeron just loves Jerry Goldsmith I'd like all of you to name your favorite score by this muscical master on a list from one to ten - one being best.

In honor of Jeron, I will wait until he posts his choices.

Well, I am not polite enough to wait for Jeron. How could I pass this post without replying.

Before I get started, how do I get bold? italic? I have been here forever and never have figured it out.

Here's my list(I will probably forget a couple, and feel really stupid after you guys bring them up):

    This is hard, so many!

    10. Twilight Zone: The Movie
    9. Logan's Run(I really like this score!)
    8. First Knight
    7. Planet of the Apes(I do find this listenable!)
    6. The Swarm
    5. Gremlins
    4. Baby: Secret of a Lost Legend
    3. The Omen
    2. The Wind and the Lion
    1. Star Trek: Motion Picture

Honorable Mentions: The rest of his 300 and some odd scores. Actually; Mulan, First Blood, 13th Warrior, Patton, Total Recall, Alien.

Okay, I promised myself I would not get carried away. This shall suffice for now.

    Aaron

Oh gosh... I'll rack my brain trying to figure this one out. Oh well, here goes:

    01) Star Trek: TMP
    02) Rudy
... geesh this is hard ...
    03) Ghost and the Darkness
    04) The Wind and the Lion
    05) The Great Train Robbery
    06) Under Fire
    07) Medicine Man
... i hope you know i could have listed others above ...
    08) Islands in the Stream
    09) Baby: Secret of a Lost Legend
    10) Explorers

I appreciate the "honor," Scott. Goldsmith is definitely my favorite composer - and as you can imagine, it's hard for me to narrow such a long list of wonderful music down to 10. I could name 10 other scores that could easily take the place of the ones listed above. Goldsmith's more recent works are just as brilliant, though they haven't been in existence as long as some of the ones above. My point: those I've listed have stood the test of time... and that's what makes them incredible.

I like the idea of an honorable mention, so here goes:

The Russia House, Basic Instinct, The Boys From Brazil, The Blue Max, The Shadow, MacArthur, Patton, First Blood (series), First Knight, The Omen, Masada, Rio Conchos, Alien, The River Wild, The Secret of N.I.M.H., Gremlins I/II, Forever Young, Dennis the Menace, Bad Girls, Air Force One, First Contact, Night Crossing, Poltergeist, Lionheart, Legend, Hoosiers, Planet of the Apes, Logan's Run, The Illustrated Man, Twilight Zone: The Movie, In Like Flint, Small Soldiers, Supergirl, King Solomon's Mines... the list goes on.

just as sft stands in for The Omen, I must confess that of all his excellent scores it is only ALIEN which sends shivers down my spine; actually I don't know why this is, because Planet Of The Apes is no less original, but Alien has such an eerie and disturbing quality (remember how it was listening to this back in 1979!!!) that my choice can only be this score, it is goldsmith at his best!

Of his 180 scores(approx.) I only dislike around 15 with most of those being in late '80s and in the '90s. Almost everything from 1962-1988 I liked.

It would be hard to rank my top 20 on him but here are ten that are up there:

    l. Poltergeist
    2. Under Fire
    3. Legend
    4. Rambo II
    5. Night Crossing
    6. Blue Max
    7. In Harm's Way
    8. Hour of Gun
    9. Sand Pebbles
    10. Papillon, Star Trek, Alien, and 10 others tied here.

    In no particular order:

    FIRST BLOOD
    EXTREME PREJUDICE
    PLANET OF THE APES
    PATTON
    THE BLUE MAX
    BASIC INSTINCT
    UNDER FIRE
    MAGIC

... but it's impossible. There's dozens of others I might as easily put up there. Those are just the ones that came most readily to mind. I won't even get started with the other titles ...

(awright, I'll mention one most people don't know or think about: THE TRAVELING EXECUTIONER! But I mention that one just to be difficult, it's really not one of his VERY best, just one people tend to overlook.)

    Revived after 8 years.
    Wow.
    Jerry Goldsmith.
Call me crazy, but Jerry together with John Williams on their worst days were far and above better than most of these "new Generation" composers.
Only of two composers I would eagerly await a new score every year.
    Jerry was one of them.
    Gosh I miss him.

He passed away four days before my birthday. I don't think there's a day goes by I don't at least think about one of his cues from any of the films he wrote for.

It will always begin with Star Trek: The Motion Picture for me. These days, I have almost every Jerry Goldsmith score I've ever wanted, except for two:

Gremlins and Inner Space. I thought one of Intrada's "clues" on their forum that was used to build up anticipation for Alien flat out suggested Inner Space was one of their next. Got Alien instead, which was by no means a disappointment.

Just the same, I'd love to see those two re-released legitimately. After that, the rest is discovering scores from him I'd never heard before. The nice thing about prolific composers is that there's so much discover if you're ready to hear it.

Yeah, ditto. I'm so glad that Baby: Secret of the Lost Legend finally got a release. At the time of this post, and when I replied back in 2000, it of course had not been released and I had no idea it ever would be. Kinda fun, looking back, and having it now.

Not sure which was my first... it would have had to been either Alien (79), Poltergeist (82), Supergirl (84), King Solomon's Mines (85), Twilight Zone: The Movie (83) or Baby (85). It really would have been between 1981 (my birth year) and 1986 or 87 when I began to really pay attention to movies and music.

Interesting looking back on this after all this time.

My top ten still very similiar. Nothing from 1990 til his death is on the top ten, but some of his work from the 90s to the end are as follows:

    1. Chain Reaction
    2. Mulan
    3. Executive Decision
    4. Timeline
    5. Small Soldiers
    6. Mummy
    7. Thirteenth Warrior
    8. Congo
    9. Ghost and Darkness
    10. First Knight
    and several others.

I really like the action cues in Small Soldiers and the theme. Very nice but short score.

However, none of these are in my all time top ten on him.
