Oh, I forgot about North by Nortwest! How could I do such a thing?!?!
While I do not consider it a masterpiece like Psycho or Vertigo, it is certainly a great score.SFT

hi again,I wonder if anybody has a favorite herrmann score which is not so well-known...
I just heard some cues from his work for the Twilight Zone (some original and some conducted by McNeely), but they seemed somehow less inspired (inspirational?) than the music to these fantasy epics...Floyd

To speak for myself, I'm the only one so far to mention the Devil and Daniel Webster, which, by the way, Herrmann got an Oscar for. I especially love the music of the sleigh-ride scene. I really hope Varese and McNeely re-record this score.

Let me also mention another brilliant score by Herrmann for Alistair Reidīs NIGHT DIGGER from 1971. I just got that score this monday, and I consider it an absolute masterpiece, right up there with Psycho and Vertigo. Sadly, as is the case with the film, it is rather underrated.NIGHT DIGGER is scored for strings, viola dīamore, harp and harmonica. A strange mix if I may say so. Itīs a very dark score, but also rather romantic. The harmonica is really psychotic sounding and it sounds really wierd compared to the rest of the orchestra, playing in a more conventional manner.
I think I will post a more in-depth review of this score later

Herrmann is my fav & this question has bothered me for years. Every year, I seem to put another one at the top.In any case, I don't think Herrmann would be what he is to me without:
North By Northwest
The Three Worlds of Gulliver

"Vertigo" and "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir."No questions in my mind. While Herrmann has composed many great scores for films (including some much more influential than these two), I found these two scores not only to be the perfect marriage of film and music, but also to be wonderful listens away from the films as well.

I've been listening Herrmann recently, and I just picked up a copy of Fahrenheit 451. Man this is amazing. In particular track 2. Fire Engine and track 10. The Road. Joel McNeely does a great job with the Seattle Symphony Orchestra. Plus you get a taste of The Ghost and Mrs Muir and Tender is the Night. Highly recommended.
