I recall hearing good things about Titus. Before I buy it, though, what are some of your thoughts on it. I've got Alien 3, Batman Forever, Sphere, and Othello, and I really enjoy all of them, especially some of the reflective moments in Sphere, the opening and finale from Alien 3, and every use of Two Face's theme in Batman Forever. The track on Othello with the ships rocked by the stormy sea is also grand. So there's some background on my experience with Goldenthal. Give me opnions on Titus and how it compares with his prior works. After all, Goldenthal is so. . . unique, and we all love him for it. But to compare him with other composers, IMHO, can be a losing battle.

Frankly, I can't compare it to his other stuff, because "Titus" is the only one of his scores I own. However, I really like this score. Julie Taymor's interpretation sort of gave us an undistinguishable time period. Sort of modern because they used autos, but also a sort of Shakespeare-ish, ancient Roman-ish period. It's weird. So, the score is a little dark, gothic, choral; a little jazz; and a little rock 'n' roll. It sounds odd for Shakespeare, but it works well in the context of the movie, and I enjoy it just as much outside of the movie. It definitely is...as you put it...unique.

Titus is almost a compilation of Goldenthal's styles heard before in other scores. If you're a Goldenthal fan, it's a good buy. There's some odd jazz that really is more listenable than you'd think, but a few thrilling action/dramatic cues really make it worth the buy. The finale is really great. I think it'd be up your alley. Go for it.

TITUS is one of the best film scores I heard last year. If you like Goldenthal at all, you will like this one. If you don't, you won't. Consider yourselves warned. Or recommended.

this CD is worth the price just for the opening choral cue, and the finale.posted 06-29-2000 09:34 PM PT (US)

Saw the DVD today. Then listened to the isolated score with commentary. Then rushed upstairs to hear the CD again. This is one great play, which has been made into a superb film, which was heightened by a immensely effective score.
Top-notch all around.

The opening title music I find reminiscent of Stravinsky's opera, Oedipus Rex...and that's not a complaint. The score I think works fabulously with the film...though the film itself leaves alot to be desired, particularly an overwrought Anthony Hopkins trying to pull an Olivier.[Message edited by SPQR on 08-16-2002]

I had the CD before I saw the film and it was my favorite score of 2000. I still consider it my fav Goldenthal score, but close with ALIEN3. The movie really impressed me on all levels when I finally saw it and I did purchase the DVD. Goldenthal and Taymor make a great artistic team! I am looking forward to Frida Kahlo, their next collaboration. I believe they are still married as well?

It's a good score. I'd get Demolition Man over it but then again I haven't listened to Titus in ages.

Wow! I forgot all about this thread! It's two years later, but I still absolutely love Titus. Is anyone else here a big fan of the track, "Crossroads?" The violin work there is very similar to a Pasacaglia on Karl Jenkin's Diamond Music CD. If you like that track on Titus, I'd highly recommend Jenkins. I was able to find Jenkins's disc in a bargain bin for a buck, too, and I bet it's cheap on ebay, too.
What do you guys think of Goldenthal's score to Final Fantasy? I'm a big fan of the track, "Zeus Gun!"

You've got your cannons and your guns mixed
I've spent the afternoon re-viewing the Titus isolated score to see which tracks go where - hopefully I post a track by track breakdown up here in the next day or two.

I do have that, and it's great. But my favourite is still Sphere.
