Ok well, I guess it goes without saying that Elfman "should" do it...and most likely will.
But now that I may have your attention...Since it's been somewhat confirmed that Mark Wahlberg will be the "human" in the film I was wondering what ya'll thought of my "take" on the casting.
Here goes...
TAYLOR - MARK WAHLBERG
DR. ZAIUS - JACK NICHOLSON
CORNELIUS - JAMIE KENNEDY (Scream 1,2 and 3)
ZERA - CHLOE SEVIGNY (Kids, Boys Dont Cry)
NOVA - PENELOPE CRUZ (Jamon, Jamon)
The way I figure it the roles of the apes would more than likely go to HUGE stars or stars that arent well established AND don't mind having their face covered.
I'm not sure I agree with Wahlberg as Taylor but he's better than Schwarzenegger as was originally intentioned before Burton signed on.
Nicholson would give the film its star power along with Wahlberg and would be a terrific Zaius even under the makeup! "You can't handle the truth!!"
Jamie Kennedy has the charisma and charm to become Cornelius and Chloe Sevigny acts mostly with her eyes and would give Zera that gleam that Kim Hunter had.
And finally Nova....ah Nova. Truly one of my first crushes ever. Well Penelope needn't open her mouth to act and would be fantastic as a gorgeous mute. Yes indeedy!
Whatcya think?

Gee whiz, isn't it obvious? It should either be Goldsmith w/ a new, exciting take on his classic approach, or it should be Elfman, modeling a new score after Goldsmith's original work.Jeron

OR: It should be Elfman doing his own thing but pay a small homage to Goldsmith's work. (like he did with Schifrin's work when he scored M:I) I'd either prefer that or have Puff Daddy score it.(That last part was a joke...)

I for one wouldn't let Goldsmith near it. His original is perfect as it is, and he's stated before that he has nothing more to say musically about the story. And his '90s style probably wouldn't fit in. (I'm not sure about this though - it depends on the tone of the remake.)Actually it should be HANS ZIMMER and LISA GERRARD! just kidding (although i usually hate zimmer and his team, Gladiator is a new favorite. he still wouldn't be right for POTA.)
I can't really think of a modern film composer up to the task. It would be hilarious to hear a John Williams score for this (or even moreso, James Horner). Maybe a classical composer like John Corigliano, but I suppose that's wishful thinking.

However the movie may finally turn out to be, I still find H Rocco's suggestion a case of genuinely inspired casting; that would be great.

Nah, If Heston has to be in it, I say he should play the STATUE OF LIBERTY and have the climax of the film end where Wahlberg tries to pull the torch from Heston's "cold dead hand"!!!!!I'D BUY THAT FOR A DOLLAR!!!

Marky Mark? Ah, man! I thought Tim Burton would have better sense than to cast some bad actor like him! Ah, geez! And I was looking forward to Burton's version of the film. Why didn't he just use Johnny Depp again, whom he said he really likes working with! Here's my version:
Taylor . . . Kurt Russell (if Kevin Conroy was unavailable)
Nova . . . the Cigar Girl from the TWINE teaserDirector: James Cameron (nothing against Burton, who I do like)
Writer: David Koepp
Composer: Elia Cmiral (or, if Cmiral was unavailable, Elmer Bernnstein, in his Spacehunter/Slipstream mode)It doesn't really matter who plays the apes, as you won't see their faces anyway.

Judging on Tim Burton's take on Batman & Returns, I guess you'll see something totally beyond our speculation.
Apart from the obvious dark and gloomy set pieces, I reckon the apes will look very muck like the performers in "George of the Jungle" fame - i.e.: not so cute or cuddly, but mean ass SOB's and very sinister. Let's face it, although Bob Chamber's make up for the original apes was stunning for it's day, if Stan Winston or his ilk get a handle on the apes, they'll be more machine than actor.Score? only one answer: re-use Goldsmith's original - as has been said, it is very uniquely the "voice" of this movie.

If it's going to be Burton, then it's going to be Elfman; let's just get used to that right now. Depending on how close the remake is to the original, it might be interesting to hear a CAPE FEAR/PSYCHO-style reintegration of the original Goldsmith score; but I think it's more likely Elfman will write something entirely new (and feel terrified about plunging into it, since he's a huge and avowed Goldsmith fan himself. But he's one of the only composers in the field that I think might be equal to the task. I'm sure Goldsmith would NEVER want to score a remake of APES, for ANYONE, so we can forget about that.)As far as Wahlberg ... I remember when Burton cast Depp in EDWARD SCISSORHANDS, and everybody thought THAT was ridiculous. Who knew then that there was a good actor inside that TV-prettyboy shell? In turn, Marky might well surprise us. Wahlberg is far younger than Heston was when he made the original APES, however, and it'll be many years before he (if ever) gains the same kind of dramatic weight. Mel Gibson or Kurt Russell would be perfect. Gibson in particular, since no other major star SINCE Heston has been tortured so lavishly and regularly on film. (Stallone, maybe, but he's a cartoon. Although I kind of like him, he might actually be an interesting Taylor, but there's no point in speculating too far in advance. Off the top of my head, George Clooney also projects the proper amount of cynicism and worldliness. I'm hoping that Ah-nuld is completely out of the picture, I always thought that was a DREADFUL idea.)
Basically though, I'm hoping the script will be so different from the original movie that we can't even THINK in terms of "who'd be perfect for the role as we know it." Who knows if there'll even BE a Nova, as such? And the only characters among the apes that REALLY need to be returned are Zaius, Zira and Cornelius -- or facsimiles thereof.
I MUST disagree that it doesn't matter who PLAYS the apes. One reason why those three roles I mentioned above are indelible is because of the superlative performances, even through all the makeup, of Maurice Evans, Kim Hunter and Roddy McDowall.
Glad you agree with me about Heston as Zaius, Nicolai -- it's so perfect on so many levels. Zaius is the "defender of the faith," and Heston still the guy we identify with as Moses and Ben-Hur (in that "tale of the Christ" from 1959). It would be a gorgeous, weird funhouse mirror, and I'm sure Burton could not resist the opportunity (he's VERY good at casting, and better with actors than he's usually credited for.)

Hey dantoris, what's wrong with Cathrine? She's my favorite actress and one of the few who don't only look awesome, but who can also ACT.Anyways, it's impossible for me to top Chris's casting choices so I better shoudln't try at all (seriously, your choices are perfect, Chris!). But I wouldn't want Jerry to write the score. Just as he said in the London Barbican Concert (yes dudes, I was there and I heard Fireworks, and I talked to Richard Kraft - hahahaha!): What is he supposed to write? How should he top his previous effort?
In my opinion Burton's composer of choice should go the 'Psycho-way' and just re-orchestrate Jerrys score to fit the new film.posted 06-29-2000 04:45 PM PT (US)

HARRISON FORD?!?!!?Could I be more sick of him already? One of the most popular and least versatile actors of all time??
Hey, Lili Taylor, I'd forgotten about her. But wouldn't the makeup for Zera be redundant?

If Elfman doesn't adapt Goldsmiths work.....I'm thinking a darker and slower Nightbreed/Dead Presidents sound.
Wow, Kurt Russel. I'd forgotten about him too. He's the antithesis of Harrison Ford to me. I never tire of watching him (well maybe in Soldier). Russell would be a fantastic Taylor! He's like the 90's James Franciscus.
Couple him with the lady from TWINE and Il Postino and......I"M THERE!!!!Dantoris rocks!!!

All I have to say is, why in the HECK do they insist on re-making movies? And "Planet of the Apes" isn't even that old. Can somebody PLEASE come up with an original idea. However, since it seems we're going to have to suffer a remake, how about Carter Burwell scoring? I have no explanation why, it's just the first name I thought of. Or how about Thomas Newman doing his "American Beauty"-type score? I think that'd be kind of cool.

I also think Kurt Russell would be great as Neville in the long-planned-and-apparently-scraped-for-now remake of The Omega Man.Wow! I've chosen Kurt Russell to play two characters originated by Charlton Heston. Perhaps Russell as Moses in a remake of The Ten Commandments?

Great topic!!! As usual this question would be answered Elfman right? Here is an idea have both Elfman and Goldsmith contribute to the film. Goldsmith being there for the main theme and other odds and ends of the score and have Elfman do the majority of the music with some if needed help from Goldsmith?? But overall I would still say this is Elfmans movie to score because its a Tim Burton movie and Danny is my favorite composer...

This movie's a bad idea, so I wouldn't want Goldsmith involved. However, I'm sure Elfman could work with Goldsmith's approach-hopefully taking an approach like his recreating the Psycho score. But if he doesn't, the same ideas will still come across.
Atonal, harsh, barbaric music with only small motifs? That's the contemporary Elfman!

AI (Al? AL? A-1?...what is it?), WHY is this movie a bad idea?I submit to you that as much as I love the Original Movie, there is sufficient unexplored material in Pierre Boulle's novel Monkey Planet to create something completely fresh and new, totally different from the first film series.
I expect (I hope & I pray!) that Tim Burton will do just that.

Chris,If they can make something decent and original, then I think it may be okay. I just don't think it is necessary to re-tell the first Planet of The Apes story. I might be proven wrong. It may end up good. If Burton is helming the project, at least the audience will get some style. I just hope the substance is worth it all though.
Oh yeah. And you had it right. It's AL. I never really thought that people could be mistaking me for steak sauce this whole time.

I'm curious if the screenplay to this film will incorporate elements of the sequels to the original POTA. I think we can only assume that the studio, whichever that may be, sees franchise potential here. Lord knows that there's arguably franchise potential in ANY movie that is made. I'm surprised that Titanic has not been sequelized (or even remade!) by now.Personally my fave of the original 5 films is the third. Escape from the Planet of the Apes is written just as well as the first one and I'm just a sucker for a Romeo and Juliet type ending!. Its hard choosing a fave when the first one is so good, like Star Wars or Indiana Jones. But my faves arent the ones that started it all. (Empire and Temple are the best for me.)
So which is your fave Apes film? My ratings are...Planet of the Apes - 8
Beneath the Planet of the Apes - 6
Escape from the Planet of the Apes - 10
Conquest of the Planet of the Apes - 9
Battle for the planet of the Apes - 5
The TV series kept me riveted to the screen as a child I have to say. Its kind of interesting to watch now. I vaguely remember seeing the animated series. I seem to remember it being overly beige like the first film.

laterz!

Jens - Sorry for not answering you. I just now saw your post. If you like Catherine Zeta-Jones, that's fine. Me, I personally don't see the big deal about her. (She's ruined a lot of the movies she was in, Entrapment, The Mask of Zorro and The Haunting come to mind, though all those films were already pretty bad to begin with.) I just don't think she's that great. The only film with her I can watch is the The Phantom because she's only a supporting character and doesn't get to do a lot.I also don't think she's very attractive. I would definitely put her on my list of "Women Whose So-Called Beauty Is Overrated."
But if you like her, that's fine. Just my opinion.

Hmmmm. Cmiral would be interesting, but Eliot Goldenthal could really be let loose on this thing. On a less serious note:
I think Charleton Heston should play a Gorilla arms dealer selling extra ammo (through the PRA--Primate Rifle Association) to the apes for the hunt....
How about
Taylor: Gene Hackman (why not...)
Nova: Pamela Anderson
Cornelius: Jerry Seinfeld or Ben Stiller
Zaius: Alanis Morrisette (aka Dogma)
2 astronauts who die anyway: William Shatner & Samuel Jackson

BECAUSE THEY CAN!!!!!!Hollywood is not about artistic integrity. Its a BUSINESS!! That means money!
We should all be thankful that Burton is attached because WE ALL KNOW it could be worse. Hey, how about a Bruckheimer Apes film huh?!! Oh I know, how about a Devlin/Emmerich Apes movie. Incase no ones aware, since the film is actually a "reimagination" of the original novel than a direct remake (and to help people realize that), the studio has changed the title to "The Visitor," which obviously refers to the human character played (unfortunately) by Dorky Fart!. . . um, I mean Marky Mark.
