Kris mentioned that Alan Silvestri will be scoring Sommers' next Mummy flick... can anyone else confirm this?Everyone KNOWS how much I wanted Jerry to score this sequel, but alas... apparently that's not gonna happen. I didn't really think about Silvestri scoring this type of film, though the thought really does appeal to me now. If this is true, I'm very excited to see what he does... and the BIG question is, will Sommers request that he use Goldsmith's themes?... or will he begin at the proverbial, thematic "square one?"

I also just recently read THE PERFECT STORM...found it chilling...reading Hannibal now and cannot stop...WOW...heheheSilvestri took over scoring gig for Judge Dredd and did a GREAT job. In my opinion, Silvestri will come up with something really interesting and exciting for the sequel...IF he is going to do it. I can hear Poledouris though...hehehe...

JeronTHE MUMMY (US 1999 movie *** score ***1/2) was a very entertaining, and refreshingly old-fashioned movie, with an excellent score from Jerry Goldsmith. Whilst it would have been nice to see Goldsmith return to score the sequel, I believe that a potentially successful movie such as ‘THE MUMMY RETURNS’, would benefit to an even greater extent from Silvestri’s accomplished film-scoring talent and CMS proficiency.

We could do worse than Silvestri; I've liked his action writing more and more as the years went by (didn't think much of his early stuff, but he really went to town on PREDATOR 2, BLOWN AWAY and VOLCANO). And by sheer necessity the project will require him to branch out from that rather standardized style he's been able to use on all of them. More simply put, I'd be curious to hear Silvestri write "Egyptian."I don't believe Silvestri is a lock, though. As Mr. InSanDiego hinted (well, was that a hint or an opinion?), Sommers might well go back to his composer of two movies ago, THE JUNGLE BOOK's Basil Poledouris, who would be equally a good choice.

I can't wait. I'm confident that Silvestri will deliver. I heard a while ago that Silvestri was Sommers' original choice for DEEP RISING.

Silvestri? Poledouris? I never saw the need to watch the first movie (although I might get the DVD some time just for the additional music), but I'm really looking forward to the sequel score now!NP: Cutthroat Island (Debney)

Boy, Marian, you're missing out. It was the best film of 99, by far!

The next MUMMY should be ready for summer 2001; if they follow the same pattern as the original MUMMY, it will be a late May release. The script is already written and casting more or less in place.I'll believe Silvestri is scoring it when I see some real evidence. It does sound like Goldsmith doesn't want to do it, though.
It was mentioned elsewhere on the board that Sommers first wanted Silvestri for DEEP RISING; I simply don't believe that, since Goldsmith, who DID score DEEP RISING, had been the first choice for the director's previous JUNGLE BOOK. Goldsmith said OK to that one, then the schedule fell through, and Basil Poledouris did it instead.

There.
I just bit a packing peanut. Don't worry. It's one of those packing peanuts that's actually made from grain, so it's completely biodegradable. As well as edible. I hope they soon make them in flavors.
Anyway, Rocco...WHERE does a comment like that one COME FROM???
Please drop the other shoe...

HAHA, Chris... a packing peanut?!? That's hilarious. I love to dissolve those things in water and pour the goo over ant hills. ...forget I said that. Anyway, lemme know when they begin to produce them in flavors! That sounds promising.Jeron

Jeez, Chris, how many of these threads do you visit? (You have less free time than me, though. But just wait till I'm on that tugboat.) Anyway, we've gone over this several times even since before Detroit! But you have enough else to worry about, so don't let it sound like I'm barking atcha.SO: If I'm remembering this right -- the Timchanter or Mr. Brecher or any other individual present could confirm this -- Goldsmith told his most recent London audience (during a Q&A session ... again, I wasn't there, my memory is spotty as to what this comprised) -- that he didn't enjoy scoring the first MUMMY very much, and doubted very much he'd want to be doing the sequel. I have no idea WHY he didn't like it, since the score is so ebullient, but who knows how these things work.
(I'll confess my deepest fantasy: that they'll approach Goldsmith the right way and he WILL do it. I didn't think the first MUMMY was a great film, but it was okay for what it was, and I did love the score -- and based on what I understand of the sequel's plot and setting, I think Goldsmith might do a wonderful job with it. Frankly, I know of no more interesting projects on the immediate horizon ... and none of them action pictures. I WAS AMELIA EARHART might be interesting, but who knows if it'll get made; and I doubt, despite the IMDb data, that Goldsmith will wind up doing THE SHIPPING NEWS, since he was hired in advance by director Fred Schepisi, who bolted the project long ago. And to my mind, NEITHER of these might be as much fun to listen to, in the final event, as a second MUMMY. That's just me, of course.)
Chew carefully, Christopher. (I prefer roasted-in-the-shell peanuts myself; I put em in the fridge until they're nice and chilly. I only know one other person on Earth who does that. With dry-roasted nuts, on the other hand, those I leave out in the warmth. Don't ask me why if you expect an answer. As far as packing peanuts, if you're REALLY in a pinch, they might go well with salsa, but if you have salsa to back up on in the first place, then why not buy something more practical? Of course it might be wise to maximize the food value of the packing peanuts -- but HOW MUCH IS THERE, EVER?)
