I recently purchased the new DVD of Pee Wee's Big Adventure mostly for the isolated score track with Elfman commentary.

I'm very happy to hear that he doesn't talk over the score, except for the P.W. Herman sequence, and the score sounds pretty good.

It leads me to wonder about Varese Sarabande's release however. This seems to be exactly the same recording, even though John Coleman and the National Philharmonic are not mentioned anywhere in the credits of Pee Wee's Big Adventure.

Interestingly, Back to School sounds very much like how it does in the film, and the credits thereoff list Lennie Niehaus as the conductor.

Is Varese's album a badly marked soundtrack album for each?

And has anybody timed the score for Pee Wee to see how long it was?

Recommendation: watch the Large Marge sequence in slow motion.

Varese definitely produced rerecordings of the PEE WEE/BACK TO SCHOOL scores. I, too, am amazed at how close they are, though I never matched up the timings, and haven't seen the DVD. But yes, it had to be a rerecording. Those pesky re-use rights. Anyway, shouldn't there be a great deal more music on the DVD, if it's isolated? Just wondering, I haven't seen the whole movie in more than ten years.

I dunno, but I just now noticed there are two track number elevens on the Varese CD. One's the Finale of Pee Wee, the other is the Overture of Back to School, and the track lengths are 3:12 and 2:13 respectively. What the ? Perhaps the music drove the QC dude a little mad. Wacky fun!

If you guys don't like Varese's stuff you should get "Music for a Darkened Theatre: Volume One". It's a Danny Elfman compilation that is all culled from their original recordings. It also has the "Back to School" main titles.

Volume 2 (an awesome 2-cd set!!), has tracks from the Pee Wee tv series.

The PEE-WEE/BACK TO SCHOOL tracks on MFADT Vol. 1 are the Varese re-recordings, which are wonderfully punchy and sound awesome.

The only way to hear the AFM performed PEE-WEE score is on the isolated DVD track.
