One the news tonight, it was announced that Sharon Stone will reprise her famous (infamous?) role in Basic Instinct II. Michael Douglas will NOT be in this sequel. (Wonder if he was ice picked??) I can't imagine that ANY other composer would be picked to score this movie other than Goldsmith. Any speculations on the story?

Do we really need a sequel to film that wasn't that great to begin with? Of course, we need as many Goldsmith scores per year as possible, so I say if we get another because of this film, then by all means, let's have another one.

But I'm still more-anxiously awaiting the Goldsmith/Mummy 2 announcement more than anything else this year. They've already started shooting in Morocco (earlier this month, in fact), so some kind of announcement can't be far away.

Alan Silvestri is scoring THE MUMMY 2. Goldsmtih said he doesn't want to score any more sequels (except for Star Trek).

I don't think Goldsmith would want to come near this one. Perhaps only if Paul Verhoeven returned to direct it, and then Verhoeven would only do it if he could think of a novel spin on the story. Could there possibly BE one? I don't see it. I am really not convinced the film will ACTUALLY be made.

I didn't think "Basic Instinct" was that hot, but I agree with dantoris - we need as many JG scores as possible. I REALLY wanted him for "Mummy 2", but what about the "Mummy" prequel that's being talked about? Yep. I read it in "Daily Variety," so it's gotta be true.

WWF's Rock is playing um...The Scorpion King (I think) in "Mummy 2," and I guess people were so impressed, the wanted to build a whole movie around his character. Go figure.

dantoris, I think you summed up my feelings toward a sequel to The Mummy perfectly, with the exception of adding the words "steaming pile of horse manure" somewhere.

Sad about Goldsmith not returning, but great to hear about Silvestri. When I first heard that The Mummy Returns (the official title) was being made, I thought, "Well, if Jerry doesn't return, I'd pick Silvestri."

Anyone else besides me think this is because Stephen Sommers originally wanted him to score Deep Rising and took this has an opportunity to work with him?

Are you SURE he wanted Silvestri first for DEEP RISING? Sommers wanted Goldsmith first for his previous JUNGLE BOOK, and nearly had him, but had to settle for Poledouris due to that nasty old "scheduling" thing.

Well, when I mentioned that www.bttf.com had Deep Rising listed in Silvestri's filmography, someone from the board e-mailed them about it, and they told them that it had been added when Silvestri was being considered for the film, and they had just neglected to take it down. (And it's still there!)

I'm sorry but a movie this ridiculous just screams ZIMMER to me!!!!

Who was it that said "...there are really no NEW ideas."? Well, it's crap like this that makes me hate Hollywood for wasting my time for inadvertently hearing this news, for spending money on such a two dimensional venture and for trying to ressurrect a stalling movie career of a barely talented actress......GIMMIE A ****ING BREAK!!!!!!!!

Hey, mommy, you were faster - I wanted to start a thread like this myself, but then I thought, maybe the Austrian news just screwed it up once again and it's not true. Well, they said Michael Douglas WILL be in it...

NP: Essential Goldsmith; The Basic Instinct track just stopped; started to play when I opened this thread - weird

I just want to know where this news of Silvestri scoring the sequel to The Mummy came from.I can't find a single piece of info regarding either Goldsmith returning or Silvestri taking over scoring duties. So is it really true that Goldsmith has declined to score this or any sequels anymore, excluding the Star Trek series?

Goldsmith supposedly said -- I read this here, I believe he was addressing questions at the London concert -- that he didn't have a very good time on the first MUMMY, and didn't think he'd be back for the second.

I doubt Goldsmith would veto ALL sequels -- hey, U.S. MARSHALS was one, and he didn't even write the original FUGITIVE (I think he did MARSHALS as a favor for his editor-turned-director buddy Stuart Baird, who also hired him for his debut EXECUTIVE DECISION) -- anyway, I kind of think at this stage of his career, he's not likely to do many more pictures that will even HAVE sequels. Except for the Trek franchise, of course. I don't think he'd want to do a BASIC INSTINCT sequel in a million years, even though he was (rightfully) proud of the first one. Even if BASIC INSTINCT II is made, it's bound to be such a boondoggle, only Goldsmith's traditionally relentless nose for picking BAD MOVIES would convince him to do it ... frankly, I hope he stays off it. I'd like to hear him do MUMMY RETURNS, though, the settings and trappings sound just different enough that he could possibly have real fun with it. But he feels he didn't the first time, soooo ...

heh, why don't they follow the example of ALIENS and call the next one MUMMIES? (There is a second one, isn't there, that character played by The Rock, but maybe he's just a sorcerer, that Scorpion King mentioned above. I haven't been paying that much attention.)

Oh yes, Marian: Michael Douglas in BASIC INSTINCT II? Never happen.

Without knowing ANYTHING about the existing story, let me speculate: Sharon Stone's character will fall afoul of a YOUNGER detective, played by some up-and-coming younger actor ... Billy Crudup, say. He's figured out what she's up to -- she killed Michael Douglas's character years ago, and published another roman-a-clef about it. An impulsive soul still attempting to cope with the premature loss of his policeman father years ago (he died during a high-speed chase across the Golden Gate Bridge), Crudup decides to buck his superior officer (played by Brian Dennehy, whose character is the brother of the George Dzundza character from the original BASIC INSTINCT, and has his own reasons to hate and fear Stone, but insists nothing can be proven, and Crudup should forget about it.) Crudup leaves the force and assumes a secret identity, shadowing Stone at high-class parties hoping to catch her attention.

Although she's made millions as a crime novelist, she's socked it all away to a Swiss bank. However, with the help of his spunky computer hacker partner, played by Janeane Garafalo (who has an unrequited crush on Crudup), they're able to find out all the information about her account, AND her prior life as a dominatrix call girl to the Emir of the Sub-Saharan Djbjdbitjdk state, the tiniest but most oil-rich in all the Middle East. The Emir Djbjkwckldjkjikizjd (played by Anthony Quinn) has an estranged son (Vincent Perez) who leads a gang of radical fringe terrorists (the terrorists are played by Tony Shalhoub, Hank Azaria, and rogue AWOL Marine Jake Busey.) Perez is aware of his father's prior assignation with Stone, but the Emir doesn't know that she slept with Perez as well, and Perez is still infatuated with her. The Emir, however, wants her dead, because of all the gold bullion she stole from him years ago, so he orders Perez and company to track her to San Francisco. They find her, but she eludes them after a high-speed chase along the waterfront.

Crudup and Garofalo pursue Stone to Switzerland, but so do the terrorists (I didn't say this part was going to make much sense), and after a high-speed chase through some, I don't know, whatever they have in Switzerland, Garafolo is killed and Crudup wounded trying to save Stone, who he needs to keep alive so he can drag her back to the United States and make his name as the guy who busted her. Not knowing this is his real motivation (she thought he was an art gallery owner in San Francisco), she nurses him back to health at one of the many secret mansions she keeps throughout Europe. Now he owes her his life! What kind of choice must he make? The answer coming your way to theaters in the summer of 2001! Directed by Rob Cohen. (In which case, music by Randy Edelman. I can't wait.) (actually, I think I already know how this is going to end ... maybe I'll post it later.)

Hey, H’ness, I like the script. You OUGHT to be a script writer. Applause!!!
(Maybe you already are?) Be sure to have Sharon Stone practice
her Black Widow arts on many males.

Maybe Jerry will take this, expanding his themes like he did in
Rambo II, but I doubt it.

I’ve always been impressed with Billy Crudup. (He says it is
pronounced Crude-up.) Quite despicable in Without Limits
and Inventing the Abbotts, but he has charisma.

In my opinion, BASIC INSTINCT (US 1992 movie **** score ****) was a very entertaining, and refreshingly old-fashioned thriller, with a superb, and influential, score from Jerry Goldsmith. Whilst it would be nice to see Goldsmith return to score the ‘proposed’ sequel, I believe that a potentially prestigious movie such as BASIC INSTINCT II, would benefit to an even greater extent from Zimmer’s extraordinary film-scoring talent and CMS excellence.
