While the main attention seems to be with The Perfect Storm, I'm the only one that was more was ecxited about Chicken Run. I mean Horner is alright, but this is Media Ventures here!
    For those that care....
    It's a wonderful 60+min large orchestral and choir score. The score is very dramatic and epic with a few jazzy like cues. It has some great action cues, and themes. Even better than Antz. Although it's a light hearted score for a animated film, it didn't fall in the silly cartoon stuff. Overall I'm very impressed. I also got Perfect Storm today....I think its boring compared to Chicken Run.... ^_^;

I'm curious as to what MV haters will think of this one since it's different from the usual MV stuff, well there are some classic trademarks here and overthere, but I'm talking about over all.

NP- Chicken Run (John Powell / Harry Gregson-Williams) 5/5

I'm getting more and more curious about this movie. Like NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS, it's a HAND-made animation movie, in the sense that they went to the trouble of molding and moving the plasticine chicken figures. I tend to want to support that kind of effort. I'm getting weary of CGI.

Wouldn't buy the score until I heard it in the movie, but John and Harry are by far the most talented of the MV graduates. I don't see why it takes two of them (usually more) to finish a single picture, though.

Some time this week the FSM webpage gave the score a rave review, and the reviews for this movie have been excellent.

(Time magazine also supported The Patriot. Finally, maybe the year 2000 will turn out a few good movies.)

You're right, Tim, it definitely doesn't sound like your usual MV offering. Though I'd like to see the film again to reassess the score (in terms of context, and if I think it would be worth buying), the score worked very well in the film.

Chicken Run is currently residing in my car cd player. It's a fun, interesting score, with homages to other scores and even some kazoos in the mix.

The special f/x of today is unrealistic, stuff like Superman blows away today's work because of realism and photography.
The British were and still are great at what they do. More productions need to come over here.
    American blockbusters look plastic.

I'll watch Chicken Run, a lot of effort was put into that and it deserves my money.

I just saw a sneak preview of "Chicken Run" at 11:30pm last night. WOW!!!!! Being an animation student, I was totally blown away by the amount of time they put into their set design and the realistic movements of each and every character was mind boggeling. The story was outstanding too!

For the people who aren't to sure about purchasing this score, don't wait around all summer buying small, unknown cd's just for the fun of it. This soundtrack is so much fun and it performs extremely well in your cd player. It's 62 minutes of pure fun with the occasional kazoos. What else would anyone want in a score?

    NP "Chicken Run" of course.

If Nick Park is behind it, it's more than worth watching!

I'm more excited about the movie than the score though...

I gotta disagree on the Superman point Darth. Those effects, ESPECIALLY the flying sequences, were atrocious when they were new and they look even worse today. If ever there was a movie I wish could be rereleased with tweaked FX it would be this one.

And I'm a long time admirer of British FX ingenuity. Guys like Derrek Meddings and Brian Johnson are still among my FX heros.

The visual effects in the original Superman are so uneven! There were beautifully executed scenes like the destruction of Krypton and the helicopter rescue, right along with truly phoney looking shots like the nuclear missle flying over the farmers. The "Can You Read My Mind?" flying sequence is beautifully done, but as Hal 2000 has already stated, some of the other flying shots are terrible looking, with extra thick matte lines and mismatched density.
I've always felt that the great beauty of Geoffrey Unsworth's cinematography actually contributed to pointing at the flaws in the visual effects. His scenes were lit with such soft, dreamy lighting, and it really caused the hard edged matte lines to stick out!

This movie is an absolute hoot- or cluck? I don't know how that works, but it's incredibly imaginative, entertaining, and... well, it's Nick Park!

As for the score, I did have somewhat low expectations, but I was pleasantly surprised. It's an involving score really. The main theme march with its large brass (which doesn't sound like normal Zimmer brass for a MV production) is a real highlight. It sounds a little like Randy Newman and has a Goldsmithian moment in it (almost like a moment in Night Crossing). But honestly, most of the main theme reminded me of the tune during the Hoedown Singing from "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" An odd observation, but I couldn't shake it off. There were a few moments that sounded quite a bit like Zimmer himself, but not enough that it would become distracting.

A score worth hearing in a movie that is absolutely worth seeing!

Well, you can't fix the f/x with CGI, because it would stick out like a sore thumb and I'm sure Meddings would need to be consulted because it's his work, you can't mess with other people's work, and Meddings has since passed away.

Why fix f/x? Leave it as historical documentation. Superman looks fine to me, a restored print has been completed, which has taken a few months to do.

I do agree that some bits in the film look a little rushed, but that's life. Also, the dam at the end of the film was shot by someone else in a LA f/x house, not shot by Meddings or by his British counterparts.

I sure am enjoying it. This is the first time after Antz that a real cool and fun adult score to a children's flick is so entertaining. 4 stars out of five!!!!!!!!

I saw the film today and loved every minute of it! The score was fabulous too! Great fun all the way. It had me humming as I left the theater.

I had read so many marvelous reviews about how
funny this movie was that I wondered why I didn’t
    laugh more. For me it wasn’t a side-splitting viewing;
however, it is certainly a “smile the whole time” flick.

I was amazed that I could enjoy the “claymation” (SP?)
so much. I expected facial expressions to be rather static.
Wrong. With the help of technical wizardry and the music,
emotions were quite evident. I had great fun with the
allusions to The Great Escape, Stalag 17, and Braveheart.

The filmscore dovetails perfectly with the story and
imagery. It’s full, bold, and orchestral with marching themes,
mournful tunes, action music, comedic ditties, scary motifs,
etc. I’m beginning to realize that animated movies produce
some of our finest musical scores.

I think Chicken Run is an incredible film score. I'd even venture to say that it's the most entertaining score I've heard since The Phantom Menace last year (save perhaps Ride with the Devil, TWINE, and Dinosaur). Definitely one of the year's best. I loved the film too- I saw it twice this past weekend. (I've never done that with a film in theaters before)

I loved Powell and Gregson-Williams' score for Antz a couple years ago, and I knew they'd come up with something good for Chicken Run (I even took a leap of faith and bought the score without hearing any of it first.) but I was completely taken by surprise at the energy and quality of the score. I'd like to shake the hands of every single brass player who performed in the score- I can imagine how sore their chops were after that scoring session. It largely reminded me of the brass playing in Williams' Raiders of the Lost Ark or in Horner's Star Treks or Krull...

And it sounds like Powell/G-W had a lot of fun composing this score- the themes are all great, and the while the kazoos may seem silly at first, by the end of the score they're actually pretty cool.

So, to summarize, I hated the score and don't encourage anyone to buy it.

Well, after listening to the MP3 that sabbey provided (thanks!) and to the presentation on Soundtrack Cinema, I think it's time to buy my first MV score.
