H Rocco - I think the reason some syndicated "Twilight Zone" episodes run with either version of the theme was because those were the themes attached during their specific season. Herrmann's theme was only used during the first season, so the syndicated episodes with that theme are probably from the first season.

Chris, LOL! So true, about DeVorzen. Although the Carpenters made his music sound about as good as it could possibly get.

Wilfred Josephs' theme for I, CLAUDIUS (the 1976 British TV miniseries) is terrific. As is the show itself, one of the finest things I've ever seen. I'm put in mind of it partly because of Derek Jacobi's appearance in this summer's GLADAITOR. The miniseries' incidental music was composed by Derek Wulstan, and performed by the Clerkes of Oxford.NP: VERTIGO (Bernard Herrmann, OST version, conducted by Muir Mathieson)

H Rocco, I LOVED "I, Claudius"!!! I am hoping that it comes out on DVD. After all, there was a laserdisc boxed set. Livia was so evil!!!

I never saw the laserdiscs, but I WOULD buy a DVD set, once I could afford it. Well, in theory, I have all the VHS tapes as it is, I'd have to be feeling extra rich that week. Beautifully adapted from the Robert Graves novels by Jack Pulman ... actually, I think Pulman did a better job on the material than Graves did (nothing against Graves) ...What was interesting about the series, to me, wasn't merely the evilness of the various characters, but the sheer helpless humanity of them. Livia was vile throughout the series, and yet in the last episode or two we begin to understand where she might be coming from. (Remember the way Sian Phillips pronounces the line "I'll be in Hell!" Somehow she manages to make us feel sorry for her, despite all that we've seen her do.)
John Hurt also managed something similar with his portrayal of Caligula. "The thing about Caligula," he said years later, "is that he was so obviously trying to make it all RIGHT." It's an interesting approach, and a fairly smart one: as written, Caligula is merely insane, not entirely responsible for what he does. (And what he does, or appears to do, is infinitely worse in the implications of the script than what we know of Caligula himself. Mr. Ruger, I wonder if you've read a rather strange recent biography which attempts to make him out to be a decent and misrepresented gentleman. I can't remember the title, I merely browsed it at the library a year or so ago.)
I also had a sneaking sympathy for the script's version of Tiberius, although the man himself appears to have been irredeemable.

Hi,I'm new to this, so I'll probably repeat lots of things, but pls bear with me!My Top ten TV theme tunes are as follows:
(in no particular order)
Airwolf
Babylon 5
Man from UNCLE
ST:Voyager
Taggart
ER
Doctor Who
The X-Files
Crockett's Theme from Miami Vice
Inspector MorseMusic very much influences me as to whether I will actually like the programme itself. If its a good stirring tune, for an action programme, you can bet I'll like the programme!
The scariest tune on TV anytime has to have been Doctor Who.
cheers,

I don't watch too much tv..but how about Star Trek DS9, The Simpsons, Daria, Mystery Science Theatre 3000, Dennis Miller, Married With Children, Cops (especially the commercial break version that's just the refrain and the bass line), X-Files, Perry Mason, Mission Impossible, Powerpuff Girls, and I know this is gonna sound very obscure, but the original version of the Unsolved Mysteries theme from the first few seasons gives chills down my spine every time I hear it...oh yeah. I forgot about the Charlie Brown and Snoopy Show!

Yeah, I Claudius is cool, I have that one.
Those recent "Whazzaaap" TV Land commercials have reminded me how much I also like the old Adam 12 theme.
P.S. Thomas Dolby's song "One of Our Submarines" sounds mucho like Six Million Dollar Man, in case anyone's interested.

Yeah, glad to see you all agree with me. What am I here, a thread killer or what?
Anyone here mention the great theme to that funny funny cartoon show Dilbert yet? Yeah, I thought Not. And you call yourselves theme fans. You gotta know, that's a funny show, man, a funny funny show.
I also like PJ's, Family Guy and all them other prime time cartoons nobody ever talks about or watches.

First off, it's nice having you here, High Plains Drifter. I also love those themes (as well as the shows). Little known fact: the producers of "Dilbert" heard a piece of music from Danny Elfman's long forgotten score to FORBIDDEN ZONE (the title track), got Steve Bartek to re-arrange it, and viola (I mean, voila)! It's much better on the show; it was originally a vocal piece.Second, this thread was so popular; what happened? Anyway, here are more favorites:

Gee, The Morton Stevens CBS Movie theme of 1966-71 IMO, Was one of the creepiest compositions around, Especially with it's peculiar bulb composition. The theme sounded like a "City Ablaze"-type composition. A PRIME SCARE FACTOR. Also with the red & blue folding illusions.
