Okay chidren....AUGUST 18 and AUGUST 19.
John Williams in concert at the Hollywood Bowl.
So far, we have the following attendees:Mark Hatfield
The Lovely Laura
Sheriff JoeWho else wishes to partake?
I can tell everyone this:
There will be a big barbeque/pool party for all attendees at my house, plus a relaxed, informal tour of San Diego. Perhaps a road trip/train trip up the coast a couple of hours to LA for the Saturday night concert...and lots of FUN, THRILLING experiences that only the town of Los Angeles, California can provide.
Mark has graciously agreed to be an out of town host...and I am throwing in my hat now to co-host this event with him (as I grew up in LA and know how much riot gear to wear and how to hide it from pesky police officers...hehehe).
Let's make sure that the Detroit Dandy expedition is NOT alone, although it will forever be the most unique experience of many lives here. Let's make more memories and spend a night at the bowl with one of Film's premiere composers!!
NP - Fight Club (Dust Brothers - NOT one of Hollywoods premiere composers...)

I'd LOVE to go. Strangely, I am in demand for THREE separate events in Los Angeles from now through October, but have no idea whether I can do ANY of them. I'd LOVE to make Los Angeles, but may have to be more realistic than that. I'll keep it in mind.(sigh) if only it were easier. NP: MIDWAY (Williams, Varese rerecording)

As indicated, I am "in". We'll be working at coming up with a social calendar for those who can stay for a day, and a decent evening of warmth and community for the concerts themselves.ATTN:
Shaun Rutherford
H Rocco
Patrick (you know who you are)

Howard L
-- you all will be expected to attend. !!

Please, folks, let's meet and greet. I would love to meet anyone who posts here (well, maybe not YOU, Chris!
). My own account of the Detroit Goldsmith thingee will be submitted shortly; I can tell you that it was epiphanic. Most everyone can stand to meet new friends.

Joe, you can count on my parents and I to be in attendance. We purchased our tickets last week. I'm curious, though... San Diego is not just a hop, skip, and a jump from LA... what's up w/ this party? And hey, if that's the case, Peter Kelly should have no excuse NOT to make an appearance...Jeron

Hey! Responses! CooUHL!Jeron -- the drive from San Diego to LA can be managed (without attracting the attention of the local constabulary, mind you) in just over 2 hours. Not a trip to the local Kwik-E Mart, but VERY doable. I am DELIGHTED you & folks will be there....I'll look forward to meeting you!

Howard -- I am far too loyal an American, and stunningly conservative, to ever break the laws of this fine land. Speed kills, so my answer would have to be:
A car traveling 75 miles an hour, with one stop for gas, should make the Damn-It's-Hot to Lala Land run in about 6.25 hours.
Love you guys!

Another San Diegoan eh? Excellent (twiddles fingers)...Yes, as it turns out, the drive to San Diego and back is actually quite nice once you get away from LA and near the coastline. If you cannot make the party at my place, we'll have to do a makeshift one up in LALA Land, perhaps with a visit to Mann's Chinese Theatre so everyone can see where Brad and I first met and became friends so many years ago...oh...and they got famous people's footprints there too I hear...hehehe...
Just email me and let me know if there is anything I can do to help out.

Oh, Joe!! You just gave me a flood of nostalgia. For anyone who's interested Joe and I were working at the world famous Mann's Chinese Theater in the Summer of '86. He was an assistant and I was a lowly doorman. He was standing next to me one day and was talking to someone about the film ALIENS which had just opened. I, an ardent Horner basher who had not yet seen the film, casually leaned over to Joe and sneered, "How was the terrible score by James Horner?" Unbeknownst to either one of us, we were both big film score fanboys. Well, our friendship was forged and we ended up arguing about Horner for many years. I bemoaned his lack of originality and Joe's only response was that "Horner has the best crescendos!" LOL Anyway, I grew to appreciate SOME Horner and Joe's musical tastes have continued to develop. Joe, my friend, if I make it out there in August it'll be 1986 all over again. We can drive around in a truck, go to Westwood and see a bad movie, and drive by Mark Schulte's house and not say hello. I miss you, pal.

Joel,it's friggen dark during that time, you won't see anything but darkness...hello!
Anywhoo, I got my tickets and am going. But I ain't gonna make it to San Diego no matter how managable it is...sowie. Would love to be there though.
We should however make some plans to meet somewhere during the concert intersession. Btw, I'm going on Friday.
Anyone going to the rehearsals? So far my family and Norman McCay and myself will be there.
Let's get this together,I really wanna meet you guys.

Sorry we lost ya, MW. Maybe next time?
Scott -- OF COURSE we'll arrange to meet. All of the planning for a San Diego meeting (or anything else, for that matter) is, I should think, flexible. I will certainly be partaking of Mr. In's humor and hospitality - but I will just as certainly move Heaven and Earth to make sure we get a chance to rendezvous SOMEWHERE. Pre- and Post- concert gathering, as well as huddling for intermission, are highly desired. Make sure you let us know your preferences on this: after the nice dinner with New Friends in Detroit, I had rather thought it would be nice to head out for something similar in Hollyweird. You know.....babble, kvetch, deconstruct, and raise a glass to absent friends. I also think that it will be possible to have the BBQ in S.D. AND still get together with folks in L.A.; it may just be that a smaller circle of friends gathers at Mr. In's place. I REALLY like the thought that Brad put out here - Mann's is a very cool place.
All things can be done, with desire & planning. I would like to see as many things thrown into consideration as possible. Time, logistics & passion will narrow our calendar down to the Simply Must Do's.
I am thrilled to be going.....I mean, JOHN WILLIAMS!!!
Experience (from Detroit) tells me, however, that meeting y'all is gonna be the best part of the deal.

Hey buddy Mark, still remember talking with you about this even after lights-out on our last night in Detroit ... sort of a sublimated version of "Jeez, I'm gonna miss you," but I was serious about going. If I get the kind of work in Florida that it SEEMS I'll be getting, then I'll have more time and money than I anticipated. One thing at a time. I would hate to pass it up -- have already pretty much given up one of the other Los Angeles trips in preference of this one. We'll have to see ... I hated living in Los Angeles, but six years later it'll be curious to see what's new. (Not least at Disneyland, but you already TOLD me some of THOSE developments ...)

The Yeti's gone!?! NNNNNNOOOOOO!!!!!! I knew about the Skyway, but not the Yeti!Anybody know if Rocket Rods is still working? I got to ride it about 8 times last time I was there in 1998, but I knew that it kept breaking down (a couple times while I was in line. I got in line at about 12:30AM, it broke down a couple times, and by the time I finally got on, rode the ride, and got off, it was nearly 2 in the morning.)

Hey Rocco, Mark--Last night they showed the M*A*S*H episode when BJ organized the gang's relatives for a get-together in New York. Between this and the "Anybody Make Music?" threads, we've now hit all 3 episodes mentioned in Detroit.
Let's go for an encore.
This morning I reserved that week in August for vacation. Airfares are not cheap between Tampa & the West Coast. I'm thinking of driving to New Orleans (day and half from here) for a visit first and from there flying out to LA. Or just flying to Albuquerque and driving from there. Whatever. Everytime I think of the affordability (or lack thereof) I simply remind myself how much it would cost to fly from Norway and then say "aaah, let's just give the old plastic a workout."
Here's hopin'!

Howard: one word for you: SOUTHWEST.
Cheap and they get you there with minimum hassle...I LOVE that airline. Anyway, I am ALL excited and stuff.
Scott: Will you be in town Saturday, even if you aren't going to that concert?
Mark: Not to step on toes or anything...but I recall mentioning the Chinese idea first...hehehe...well, now, THAT was petty!!
EVERYONE: I realize that SD is a tad out of the way, but my plans for a pool party/bar-b-que are intended for those that want to get away from the BIG CITY and just relax and perhaps watch a flick on the SUPER TV with surround sound...LOL...and spend some time bonding...it is by no means an ESSENTIAL part of the journey...but just an open invitation to any and all who can attend. (The party would prolly be held Saturday morning/early afternoon, before we head up to LA for the Sat. concert)SP - Dinosaur (JNH)

Well, MY toes sure weren't stepped on, Joe. I am honestly sorry if I stepped on yours by not giving proper attribution to the Mann's comment. As far as I am concerned, the BBQ IS essential....we'll just have to arrange it to allow travel time & sufficient pre-concert free time to meet/greet everyone. I think that Brad feels the same way.......
I'm getting really excited, folks. What does everyone think of a dinner/drinks thing AFTER the concert (either, or both, nights)?
A NOTE TO MWR: I apologize for not responding in this manner sooner, but my sympathies at your wife's impending surgery. I know very well from orthopedic surgery, non-ambulatory status, and painful rehabilitation......you will both have my honest sympathy and fond best wishes. We'll get some concert stuff for ya!
