If this has been posted recently, I haven't seen it.

After 4 or 5 delays now, Varese Sarabande has officially pulled the plug on Chris Young's score to Wonder Boys. No word on whether or not this will be revived once the film is re-released this fall (which is a great idea, Paramount---this and Frequency were the only good movies I've seen this year).

So, this is great news. If anybody has tried to order this disc within the last few weeks, you may have gotten a response from whoever you did the ordering from that the CD has been pushed back to June 27th. This is obviously not factual information.

    Anyway, just FYI.

Patching up the hole where Wonder Boys was supposed to be on April 18th, May 9th, May 23rd, and June 6th,
    Shaun

Relax, Shaun it's been pushed back not cancelled by Varese at least until the film's been reissued in October. If not Christ Young will do the enveitable release a promo of it which isn't all bad concidering. For now go to Young's website and download the cues for which he's bestowed upon us.

I'm just repeating what Varese said, so unless they're a bunch of idiots who don't even know what their own releases are, I'm going to trust them for now. I do think that someone will release the score eventually, though.

If nothing else, history suggests that Chris will make his own promo. Which would likely be more complete than your average Varese issue. (Perhaps Varese is sitting on it for a while, since the movie will be reissued to theaters in October?)

    so, what's the deal?

are they thinking this movie is going to be seriously considered for an Oscar?

    What's it about anyway?

    NP -- Sommersby.

PS -- anyone have The Big Kahuna?

The film's uneven, overall, but damn if you don't get pulled into it. Michael Douglas plays a burned-out writer/college professor and reluctant mentor to Tobey Maguire's wide-eyed protogee (sp?). Thought the score mirrored the writing/directing: lots of wonderful and underdeveloped ideas. Still, am eager to see it again.

Big Kahuna is your typical Chris Young comedy score. Jazzy cellos and accordions and whatnot. It sorta reminds me of American Beauty's Main and End Titles. You'll probably notice that if you really like Newman's score.

WONDER BOYS is one of the best-reviewed films of the year so far (already more than half-over -- don't time fly?) They obviously believe they can get Oscar buzz from rereleasing it in October, otherwise they wouldn't bother (half the nominations that come about are from video mailings anyway, but making a Big Deal of showing it in theaters again is bound to get them extra publicity.)

It was directed by Curtis Hanson of L.A. CONFIDENTIAL fame (he shared an Oscar with Brian Helgeland for adapting the film's screenplay). I frankly can hardly wait to see WONDER BOYS (and somewhat resent that it'll be months away -- I expected it to be on video by now.) I wonder if the studio isn't trying to mend bridges with Hanson and star Michael Douglas, since both of them very vocally bashed how poorly (they felt) the film was promoted the first time around.

And finally, I've no doubt there WILL be a score release, whether from Varese, Intrada, or Christopher Young himself. (That weird, wiggly "promo" category. But I'm grateful it can happen. Although I understood that MOST of the film's soundtrack was carefully selected SONGS. As heard on the "songtrack.")

    Rocco,
The songs used in the film were perfect fits (mostly from my collection, it seemed!), and I bought the CD for Bob Dylan's "Things Have Changed" alone. Great song, great film.

    Shaun

NP---The Red Violin (still think the only good piece of the score was the piece not written for the film)
