Maybe I missed something from the movie.

But I noticed at least 3 instances where I saw something flash into the picture for a split second. The first occurred in the hospital when Ed Norton got beaten the first time, and the doctor is telling him to get some exercise.

does it have anything to do with Brad Pitt's character, or is Fincher just being weird?

    anyone else notice it?

tell me I'm not losing my mind.

Well, it was kinda like a joke.
there was a reference to it in the movie regarding him a projectionist at a movie theatre.
At the very end right before the credits there is another surprise too.

I noticed it in the theater but my friend didn't. I believe you're talking about the begining of the film where we see about 1 frame of Tyler Durden in the shot with the other characters. There's about 3 instances that this happens and it is BEFORE "we" are introduced to the character.

SPOILER AHEAD IF YOU'VE NOT SEEN THE FILM!!!

I look on it as the beginnings of the split-personality that Norton's character is about to endure. The times that Durden appears are times when Norton's character COULD choose to do something else i.e. like Durden WOULD do.

It does, in a way, reference, Durden's penchant for splicing in porn frames into other films, but that one is part of the narrative and Durden appearing is prolly Fincher's (or the writer's) handiwork.

I think it's interesting how SOME people catch it and others don't.

:. I caught it every time, and I agree that the flashing of pitt is the beggining of ed's breakdown, or when he 'splits', great movie i loved it!

I didn't notice it, I don't think, but I was between Fight Club and the computer.
But I'm inclined to agree with DjC.
    It was a great movie!
Even though the ending was a little bit strange.

    Spoilers ahead

I think it happens four times in the movie. As pointed out above, it's always exactly one frame with Tyler Durden. Didn't notice it in the cinema, but later I read about it and immediately saw it when watching the fantastic DVD. Everytime this happens, can Edward Norton looks especially absent and a bit annoyed. Right before the end credits, there's a more hard-core version of this flash effect.

    Great movie!

I wondered if anyone was gonna mention the "hard-core" reprise of the "flash" effect. I absolutely roared. It was just too perfect. I also liked how the movie has fundementally a happy ending, unlike the novel.
