A lot of discussions mention how certain scores surpass the film they represent with regards to quality. Hook, Far and Away and Dragonheart usually pop up, amongst others. Is it a good sign regarding the huge importance of movie scores that few great films have a meager score.
Naturally, I'm not referring to how it sounds on CD, but in the film.
I can't think of any. You?

Whomever says "Shawshank Redemption" would qualify as a poor score for a good film should be sent to Shawshank prison for life. Thomas' score is a vital part of that film's "greatness". Of recent films, "Gladiator" is a better film than it's score. Although some of it worked well, some of it didn't for me.

I'll probably get slammed for this (it happened once before at the FSM board), but I'm gonna say I dislike the score for Die Hard. Some of it worked well, the best being the music where the helicopters are approaching Nakatomi Towers. But the rest I don't like. Though I own and enjoy Prince of Thieves and plan to snatch up The Three Musketeers next time I see it, Kamen hasn't done much to impress me. I'm not saying he's talenless, I'm just saying I don't like much of his music.

I sure would love to see LadyHawke with a score by John Barry, Jerry Goldsmith or John Williams...ANYTHING BUT that Godawful pop-rock mess it's stuck with now!

The thing is, a really "bad" score would ruin any otherwise good movie, so I imagine that there can't be too many "great" movies with bad scores. Just take a great movie and temp track it with the worst and least fitting music imaginable and voilā, the movie doesn't work anymore, no matter how good it may be otherwise. It doesn't have a chance to play against the music.
But there are a number of movies with scores that work well in the movie but are not all that interesting on their own.NP: Richard Strauss THE LEGEND OF JOSEPH

Hey Dantoris
I have to agree with you on Kamenīs scores. Die Hard doesnīt really do anything for me (the same can be said of the whole trilogy).
Bits of Robin Hood and Three Musketeers are quite good, but they are the only bits of music composed by Kamen that I think are worth having. I am dreading the X-Men (why couldnīt they get Trevor Jones for this?)NP-Buffy season 2 promo ****/*****

My pick (as far as bad scores go) actually makes sense: A FEW GOOD MEN.

What the Die Hard Trilogy scores are bad. Get the heck outta here, I think you've guys have been listening to too much Zimmer lately (I enjoy his work). Please Kamen's score to these films are the most vital part because without it, the damn movies wouldn't work period. And I'll admit that. Kamen's work is much better than people give him credit for come on have you guys heard The Dead Zone. How Bout Brazil? How Bout Circle of Friends? Please. My vote for a great film with a bad score is Vampires. agh!!! Where was Ennio Morricone for this one, it had has name on it the whole way.
