Okay, next week I'm going away for a fortnight on my brother's little boat, & I would like to take some fairly chilled, lovely, peaceful, watching the world drift by at 5mph kind of music (with a little more up-tempo stuff too to prevent boredom). I've put together one compilation to give you an idea of what I'm talking about:

    Side 1

    Tombstone : A Family/Arrival in Tombstone
    Jaws : Out to Sea
    Total Recall : The Mutant
Krull : End Title (*May change this one *)
    The Beach : Mythical Waters/Starnight
    Mimic : Re-united
Christopher Columbus The Discovery : The Great Sea
    True Women : Setting Out
Sleepy Hollow : A New Day
    Scream 3 : Sid Wears a Dress

    Side 2

The Saint : Love Theme Finale
The Crow Salvation : Love Theme Finale
The Thin Red Line : The Village
Star Trek The Motion Picture : The Enterprise
Circle of Friends : You're The One
    Land's End : Goodbye/Baja Dreams (End Title)
The World Is Not Enough : Body Double
    Father Kolbe's Preaching (Wojciech Kilar)

I'd like to put together another tape, but wasn't sure what to put on it. Any suggestions of tracks (or something to replace Krull) would be really helpful.

    Thanks

    Pete

(Would you believe I actually have a section in my library dedicated to sailing music...?)

    OBVIOUS:
Anything from WHITE SQUALL, WIND....perhaps even Gabriel Yared's MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE, John Barry's SWEPT FROM THE SEA...SIX DAYS, SEVEN NIGHTS...and WATERWORLD, of course...

    NON-OBVIOUS:
THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION....THE LEGEND OF 1900....FOR LOVE OF THE GAME....JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH (Bruce Rowland)...
**Reccomended: the Imax soundtracks "The Living Sea" and "Dolphins" -- Has great Sting/The Police instrumental renditions.

"Off to Gorgon" from Goldsmith's Small Soldiers score! I would throw in a lot of Poledouris music, from Wind to The Blue Lagoon to For the Love of the Game and maybe Les Miserables.

I would highly recommend "Land Ho" from Victor Young's Around The World In 80 Days, and for a very similar seaworthy mood, the early music aboard the yacht in Max Steiner's A Summer Place, not to mention the music in the opening credits.

I'd have to second Legend of 1900 - the lovely 8 minute second track. What a beautiful climax.

    Oh, and how about
Shakespeare in Love - The End

    NP - see above

A lot of good suggestions, I would add (if you have this one)...

Moby Dick (Christopher Gordon), main theme is epic!

    Enjoy! _Sc

Put your Captain's hat on, get your sailor's horn pipe and play Ron Goodwin's theme to The Trap! (familiar to British listeners as the theme to the London Marathon).

Alternatively does anything beat Aram Khachaturian's adagio from 'Spartacus' as a sea faring theme?....I THINK NOT!!

NP : Mysterious Mountain - Alan Hovhaness

Agreed. Adagio from Spartacus is the most beautiful music on the face of the Earth.

    Calm music for sailing?

    Debussy:
    La Mer

John Scott and Mark Snow (separate films):
    20,000 Leagues Under the Sea

and yet another nod for The Straight Story. Possibly the 2nd best score of 1999, after Red Violin. Certainly one of the most calming discs you will buy.

NP -- The Second Jungle Book, John Scott; it's taking a while to grow on me, but it's slowly working it's magic.

Though not that tranquil, I'd recommend Korngold's Captain Blood Overture as an opener. Just don't hoist a black flag after hearing it...
