I think this is the last place I thought I would ever hear Zimmer music. I have heard Horner for golf tournaments, Zimmer in the olympics for the skating, and various other composers scattered throughout tv land. But tonight durring the opening sequence of WWF Raw Is War (yes I know its fake, its just 2 hours of entertainment) I heard Zimmer! Backdraft to be exact. It wasn't all the same instruments, altered just a little bit, not much...it was definately Zimmer!

    Music that transends all!

Just thought you'd all like to know.

I still think the weirdest imaginable place to hear Zimmer's music -- also the BACKDRAFT theme, by the way -- is that cooking show from Japan, IRON CHEF. that has recently obtained a small cult on the Food Channel. Last time I was in Japan, just over five years ago, BACKDRAFT had been reissued to the record stores, bearing the proud sticker "As heard on IRON CHEF!"

NP: "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" (rerun; how on earth are they going to continue without Andy?)

Was it the WWF that destroyed Orff's "O Fortuna" ?
I remember it was some wrestler that had the MOST awful arrangement of that piece.

Orff must have rolled over in his grave.

    Hey Cheeshead!!!

Welcome to the ever-small group of WWF-watching/Film music-listening maniacs!! That's right, it's 2 hours of unadulterated fun every Monday and Thursday night!! Can't believe I found another guy who does BOTH! Before I forget (from the excitement rush), welcome aboard!

Anyway, I missed the opening sequence to RAW last night but I know for a fact that WWF uses some excellent music for recaps of previous night's shows....and some they use frequently, like Orff's "O Fortuna." Though I absolutely disagree with JJH's perception of "O Fortuna" being destroyed. Personally, I think who ever supervises the music department at the WWF is pretty good at what he does--making music FIT into the program (though recently those rap themes really bite for most of the wrestlers). But Jim Johnston definitely has a dream job for music & WWF lovers....

There are quite a number of scores that they use but unfortunately, I don't know exactly where they are from. But if Backdraft was used, it was definitely the first time they have used it in awhile because I haven't heard of any Zimmer scores used, though I admit some do sound ridiculously similar to Zimmer's style.

I'm not into WWF but I hear film music all over TV and sporting events. In L.A. whenever Shaq does some superfeat they play... what else? Superman:The Movie theme. I think they play the theme from Executive Decision for one of the Utah Jazz players. And I know I've heard Jaws represent some player or another in the NBA and Major League Baseball.

And Rocco has it right. Iron Chef is the most outrageous use of Zimmer's Backdraft Theme (I now associate the music more with that show than with the movie, Backdraft). They also use a snippet form Horner's Glory as well as Edelman's Dragon:The Bruce Lee Story.

    WWF Rocks

Yess, I love the WWF and am glad to see another person on our side. Hey Norman, perhaps we should start our own gang "The Wrestling maniacs who dig film music"...

Anywhoo, last Lakers game they used part of Trevor's score for the Mighty. Quite intersting.

Oh yeah....now that everyone's mentioned IRON CHEF....I do remember hearing Backdraft during that show. I thought that was really funny, making a cooking show so dramatic. Hah hah hah....nothing wrong with that, actually.

This IS the Japanese show where chefs compete for best taste among several judges?

    H Rocco,
HAHAHAHAHA I remember hearing that Backdraft cut on Iron Chef, and it made me wonder why they didn't use Black Rain instead. Then I remembered that it's OOP and can only be obtained as an import. Oh well.

Not exactly a weird place for film music, but have any of you seen the Land Rover Freelander advert using the ID4 score by Arnold? It's quite nice actually - set in the savannah.

Actually Kung Fu movies are exploding with familiar film music. I've heard virtually everything in them. How do they get away with that anyway?

Well, consider how much trouble and expense it would comprise to sue a company in Hong Kong for stealing your music. Their industry has been notorious FOREVER for ripping off pre-existing scores ... they used to track their films straight off soundtrack LPs, everything from John Barry to Ennio Morricone to Paul Simon! (I swear, NINJA BLACKLIST's entire score is based on a Paul Simon tune that he himself heard in the Andes. It's actually fascinating to listen to, that weird rerecording, complete with new lyrics in Mandarin. I only found out about the Paul Simon connection because I heard a hotel-bar keyboardist playing it from memory in Chicago years ago, and I buttonholed him about its origins. I had no idea it was originally a Paul Simon adaptation. It sounded like something else they'd kyped from Morricone to my ear.)

NP: happens to be the Goldsmith version of the JUDGE DREDD trailer, as compiled by one fine young fellow S. on my behalf

NP (edited version) some cheapjack movie called THOU SHALT NOT KILL, EXCEPT ...
