Well, I just got my order from Intrada (they're fast!). One disc I ordered was Hour of the Gun. It's a 1967 western by Goldsmith. The sound quality on this CD is great. I'd would have never guessed that this was a 1967 recording. The recording was obviously done with great equipment and a competent orchestra.
While I've only listened to the score once, my favorite track has to be the first one, where Goldsmith "prepared a special version (of the main title theme) for inclusion in the original album apart from the picture, placing the melodic line above more contemporary orchestral ideas" (from the CD liner notes). Listen to a Real G2 sound cl.
The length of the CD is about 31 minutes.
Has anybody else heard this score?

I bought a Japanese reissue of the LP maaaaany years ago. It was the first Goldsmith western score I'd ever heard, and I really enjoyed it. I snapped up the Intrada CD as soon as I saw it, back in 1993 or 1994, I think. It's not one of his biggest or deepest scores, but a nice little ride with some great bouncy scenes (and that marvelously sinister main title sequence), which I prefer to a couple of his other Westerns (RIO CONCHOS for example, though I like that one too); but I also find a couple of his other Westerns more interesting than this one (the great 100 RIFLES in particular, and the BANDOLERO theme is one of his most infectious.)Of course, for me, "Jerry Goldsmith" is always synonymous with "GET IT."

I picked "Hour of the Gun" up on e-Bay sometime back. I'm kind of with H Rocco on the Jerry Goldsmith = must buy.I do like the score, but I think Jerry Goldsmith western-wise, I prefer "100 Rifles."
The main theme alone is great. However, both scores just go to show you the awesome flexiblity of J.G. as a composer. Just excellent.NP: George Fenton: "Anna and the King"

I'm with both of you.. I have to agree that 100 Rifles is better than Hour of the Gun... My next order from Intrada will have to include Bandolero and Rio Conchos
