Well ladies and gentlemen, it's that time again. The summer movie season is upon us and it's time for record companies to decide which scores to release. With The Patriot being released on Hollywood Records, The X-Men on Decca, and The Perfect Storm on Sony Classical. Don't you guys wonder what Varese will release. I'm certainly wondering. With the delayed release of Christopher Young's Wonderboys and the expected announcement on Jerry Goldsmith's The Hollow Man coming shortly, what will be next from Varese. Well here are some of my choices of what I expect to see released (even in the infuriating 30 min. form):What Lies Beneath (Alan Silvestri)
Gone In 60 Seconds (Trevor Rabin)
Shaft (David Arnold)
Bait (Mark Mancina)
Navy Diver (Mark Isham)
Imposter (Mark Isham)
The Klumps:Nutty Professor 2 (David Newman)
Titan A.E. (Graeme Revell)
The Replacements (wither it's John Debney or Randy Edelman scoring it)posted 06-10-2000 01:35 AM PT (US)

Back when Varese was distributed by MCA and they had unlimited access to all those soundtrack LPs that now could be reissued as CDs for the first time -- they did MACARTHUR, JAWS 2, THE FURY, MASADA and a bunch of other greats -- but WHY didn't they ever get around to Maurice Jarre's wonderful, little-known CROSSED SWORDS? I'm not really a big Jarre fan, but that's one of his best and most infectiously likable scores. I believe it was recorded in England, so it's not a re-use problem. Really, now, more obscure soundtracks by more obscure composers have been reissued before ...I don't really care what new soundtracks Varese issues unless they're able to give them a decent running time. Here's hoping that THE HOLLOW MAN wasn't recorded in Los Angeles ...

Don't forget about Dragonheart 2 by Mark McKenzie. I'm almost positive it's being released by Varese but I could be wrong.

Five words: Bruce Broughton's YOUNG SHERLOCK HOLMES. According to a long-ago article in Varese, they own the rights. In addition to the fact that the score was released on LP at the time of the film's release, and that it was performed by The Sinfonia of London, ya gotta wonder: What's taking so long?!

The score for Hollow Man was recorded in London,so hopefully we can expect a longer release from Varese.
Even though I love Varese Sarabande and all of the great releases they have had over the years.I do wish however, since Hollow Man is being released by Columbia Pictures, the cd could have been released by a sony music company like Epic,Columbia or Sony Classical since they are all pretty good about releasing long cd's.But I guess we'll just have to wait and see about Varese's album and hope it's between 50-60 minutes.[This message has been edited by Matthew (edited 10 June 2000).]

Word is that the score was indeed recorded in London with the National Philharmonic Orchestra (don't quote me directly on that at least it was recored in Europe), and since the score runs about 70 plus minutes, I'd figure the album is going to be in the vacinity of 55-70 minutes. Which should be a revelation. But here's another thing to remember once the DVD comes out next year, the scor will no doubt be isolated. So guys all is not lost.Wonderboys was originally scheduled to be released on April 18. Then it was pushed back to May 9th and then again to May 23. and most recently to June 6. Eventhough Intrada says it's in stock, it really isn't and don't expect it to be released on June 27 either (that would be a miracle!) The release date is To Be Determind, as one of the representives from Varese has told me. The reason this is being held back according to Chris Young is because of the track title listings. (this is a goodie) Director Curtis Hanson apprently had a problem with them and asked Young to name them in the order of the film. Hopefully this has been taken care of. You guys have to go to Young's site. It's fun and there's a full length interview regarding his recent score to The Big Kahuna (available on Varese Sarabande) which is truely excellent, Wonderboys, and new score updates.
Regarding Young Sherlock Holmes, I really would love to see this released in complete form. And Varese did have a chance to release it and still do. (Hint:Varese club) Word is that the club will be revived once again but the date is still open on it. And since their regular scores and re-recordings have been doing like gangbusters, expect it to return very soon.
Where's Pitch Black? Where's Reindeer Games? Where's Frequency? Where's Analyze This? Only Robert Townson knows.

It's the direct to video prequal to the movie "Dragonheart" that supposed to be released sometime this summer. Some good things have been said about it but don't quote me. I've heard that Mark McKenzie has used the orginal themes composed by Edelman and created new music of his own for the film. As I listening to his work from Durango, I'm sure it will be a winner.

You can get cheap copies of a couple of Mark McKenzie scores from Intrada. I particularly recommend his outstanding FRANK & JESSE. This is the first I've heard of DRAGONHEART 2, but McKenzie is a genuine talent, and if I found it for cheap enough, I might even buy that one blind (although I doubt you could coax me into renting the video.)

Dragonheart 2 hasn't been released but Soundtrack Cinema's radio station on Film.COM is planning to feature music from the film next week along with other movie sequals. In my opinion, the soundtrack should be rather good. Edelman's outstanding themes will most likely be played by a large orchestra and McKenzie certainly has a gift from writing some really memorable music. Can't wait.

Call me crazy, but I really like to see Varese release Trevor Rabin's score for The Glimmer Man. I believe they were supposed to release a score/songs combo CD, but cancelled it at the last minute. I really like the 'tribal' (for lack of a better word) "Main Titles," and the rising-and-falling strings as everybody is arriving at the hotel for the big showdown.

Well Mark, back around 1988 Varese was planning two for one disc involving Silvestri's Predator and Kamen's Die Hard. Reportdidly, it was supposed to be a 30-40 minute disc, but luckly thank God that it didn't come out because it would've been a travsity to these 2 brilliant scores. It felt through because repordidly it was either Silvestri or Kamen or maybe both who wasn't thrilled with the peformance of an Hungrian orchestra so they moved it back to L.A. hence the reuse fees.MacArthur is a possibility since they did reissue Masada, but The Burbs. No chance in hell that they are going to because this score (nothing against it) was one of the reasons the club sank in 1992. Varese payed way too much to release this score hence the 2500 copies. They finally broke even a couple of years ago when they finally sold them out. And they still have George Fenton's brilliantly underrated score to We're No Angels, which people should shell a little bit of money for along with Thomas Newman's Those Secrets.
Another interesting re-recording to be released is Bernard Herrmann's Marnie, which I am looking forward to along with Franz Waxman's Peyton Place.

Hey Dantoris, I'm in total agreement with you on The Glimmer Man. It's a very cool and icy score and it was supposed to come out on Atlantic Records in 1996. In fact it was announced but then cancelled sadly. Varese had a chance to release in 1996 and didn't. And the chances of this score being released after 4 years is slim and none. Rabin sooner or later will produce a promo of this score i'm sure of it. But where's Gone In 60 Seconds?

I don't know about anybody else, but I'm sick and tired of waiting for Varese's promised Spartacus, which had 70 minutes of music selected by Alex North for inclusion on the album, to be conducted by Jerry Goldsmith. A little while ago I e-mailed a message to Varese, asking what the hell was up with this, and I got back a message telling me how important the project was to both Goldsmith and Townson. Well, it's become apparent that this is poppycock, and this album will obviously never see the light of day.HardTarget, the release of Die Hard and Predator would have been released by Fox Classics (which was, at the time, on Arista [BMG], not Varese). It would have had Elliot Goldenthal's arrangement of the Twentieth Century Fox fanfare for Alien3. It was to contain approximately 24 minutes of Die Hard and 49 minutes of Predator. When the Fox contract was up, this was one of the albums they lost, owing as to the prohibitive re-use fees, since both scores were recorded in Los Angeles.
Fox's piffling with this, along with Sony's treatment of Star Trek- The Motion Picture is one of the reasons why Film Score Monthly and Intrada don't tell anybody about their releases until they're imminent.

Well Swash. Varese had the first shot in 1988 to release both of them as a combo which which fell through. And of course there's the potential Arista release which also fell through. So for now, long live the bootlegs.

Well JJ, Varese was going to release Analyze This in March of last year. It was supposed to be a bunch of songs along with 24 minutes of Howard Shore's music (which all there was in the movie itself) and it got cancelled. That really sucks because they released crap like 28 Days which features 20 minutes of fluff synth-mock Elfman music instead of something wonderful like Shore's Analyze score or for that matter Mystery, Alaska.

Mr. Buckler is right about the Fox Classics deal re: DIE HARD/PREDATOR; this same album, as he also correctly asserts, was to open up with Elliot Goldenthal's distortion of the Fox Fanfare as heard in ALIEN 3. I don't know if DIE HARD was ever to be recorded in Budapest, but I do know that PREDATOR recorded one day there, and the performances were considered so subpar, the sessions were moved back to Los Angeles. When PREDATOR was scheduled for Hungary, Intrada had designs on releasing that score, but it fell out the window once the prices went so dramatically up.This is the first I've heard of a PREDATOR/DIE HARD combo that could have come out in 1988, and frankly, I don't believe it, since I heard NOTHING of the kind back then, and also esp. given what I know about the subsequent troubled history of the Fox Classics/Arista/Varese deals. (In the wake of the various bootlegs, I'm quite sure there will never be a legal release of the OSTs of either PREDATOR or DIE HARD. I wouldn't be surprised if that DIE HARD TRILOGY rerecording ever comes about, but I don't see much commercial point to producing it.)
Don't write off the SPARTACUS rerecording just yet. Preserving Alex North's music is obviously a labor of love for Goldsmith, and it's just our tough luck that he has other things to do than rerecord for Varese. (Actually it's probably our GOOD luck, given such promising upcoming works as THE HOLLOW MAN ... well, if Goldsmith ever gave up rerecording North, then based on his gorgeous Herrmann rerecordings, I bet McNeely would give it a decent whirl ...)

Regarding Spartacus, at the London concert Goldsmith said that he'd really love to do it, but he wasn't happy with the length of the recording sessions Varese had given him for other projects, & that he would only be doing it if he could get enough time to be able to do the score proper justice. At least, I think that was the gist of it. Don't write it off yet, I'm sure both Townson & Goldsmith really want to do it, & it probably will happen eventually.

Texas Rangers good call!!! I'd expect a song album from that one along with a score album. Regarding Die Hard and Predator, I heard from inside source years ago that Varese was planning to release them on a double feature album that would've ran about 30 minutes!! but it wasn't theasable or acceptable to both Silvestri and Kamen. And to be quite honest with you, the only way these two will be released is in complete form. Not a 30 minute album. Not a 44-50 album. But a complete album, especially in the case of Predator because every little scrap of the score is especially essential since the score will only function as a whole. And the people who have the boot can attest to this.Other Varese possiblites are:
Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle (Mark Mothersbaugh)
Get Carter (Tyler Bates)
D-Tox (John Powell)
Blair Witch 2000 (Carter Burwell)
