hey guys,
this is something this board has never seen before, if you were going on a hiking trip, what music would you listen to?? I'm going on a trip tomorrow up here in montana to summit a mountain, and am taking my diamond rio 500 and have compiled the following tracks:
1. The Ascent (Hans Zimmer) - K2 music inspired by 27 minutes long! hey, its hiking, just gotta have it.
2. Now We Are Free (Hans Zimmer) - Gladiator
for the more "sentimental" part of the hike
2. The Wheel Of Pain (Basil Pouledouris) - Conan The Barbarian
3. Main Title (Jerry Goldsmith) - King Solomon's Mines
4. Escape Route (Jerry Goldsmith) - Rambo
5. Deep Jungle (Jerry Goldsmith) - Congo
6. The Crash Site (Jerry Goldsmith) - Congo
7. Main Title:South America 1936 (John Williams) - Raiders of the Lost Ark
8. The Idols Temple (John Williams) - Raiders of the Lost Ark
9. Ark Trek (John Williams) - Raiders of the Lost Arkso how about it, what music would you choose?

Well, I was actually gonna respond to suggest Congo, but I see you already have those. Can't think of anything else right now, though. Have fun!

How about something from Zimmer's "Broken Arrow?" It seemed to me there were one or two tracks that might lend themselves to hiking, but I'm too tired to get up and look at the stupid disc.NP: "Jazz For When You're Alone"

Welcome to the board ActionGuy. Basically, the first half of Rambo is definitely my choice. Since you have mentioned quite a number there, I guess it is quite complete for your trip.NP Jimmy Cliff - Shelter of your love (song from Cocktail)

I love mountains, but I don't enjoy hiking much.
Anyway, my favourite mountain music are many of Anton Bruckner's symphonies, and Richard Strauss' Alpensinfonie. As for film scores, I'm ashamed I can't think of any at the moment. Hm, maybe Dragonheart.
NP: Essential Goldsmith (yet again)

What about Goldsmith's main theme for "The Edge"? Definatly conjures up images of vast mountain-scapes.NP: Dinosaur (JNH) 4.5/5

How about Williams' The Eiger Sanction "The Top of the World."
There is some other good music from this score too -- Be sure to stay away from the movie, though.[This message has been edited by jonathan_little (edited 10 June 2000).]

The Edge is a good choice. Eiger also came to my mind, but there are only some parts in the score that would really be right for hiking.

Ah, Action Guy, now you are in MY domain!!Over the years I've done a heep load of hiking all around the world, from the Scottish highlands to the French,Swiss,Italien Alps ,Austria (just passing through...Hi Marian
) the U.S. Rockies, the Himalaya AW willya lookit that y'got me all started up.It's surprising what works at times, for instance in the Himalaya I was listening to The Beyondness of Things by John Barry which hardly shouts at you 'look at Mt.Everest', but I can tell you it really worked beautifully, personally I much prefer the deeper introspective music that reflects rather than encompasses the scenery.

Though I never had this with me I reckon Barry's ZULU would work good and give you that added bit of determination for getting up those last few paces to the summit!NP : for the 2nd time today...DOGMA - Howard Shore
