At the video store yesterday, I was considering renting a couple older films.
I didn't get them in the end, but I noticed something extremely odd.I saw The Reivers -- oddly, I don't have the score yet-- on the shelf and picked up the box.
The box credits Lalo Schifrin for composing duties. Am I wrong, or didn't John Williams score this movie?
...the film with Steve McQueen, right?
BTW -- How are The Cassandra Crossing and Capricorn One as films?
Np -- Jaws 2, with all the talk about this score, I just had to whip it out.posted 06-08-2000 07:55 PM PT (US)

Regarding Cassandra Crossing and Capricorn One:Compared to similar crap they put out today, both of these are high art. Of course, Goldsmith has alot, if not everything, to do with that. Just don't expect an epiphany of any sort, they're both profoundly inept films.

JJ,
Cassandra Crossing is awful, but I think that Capricorn One is Peter Hyams' best film (not saying much, I realize). It's odd that I even like the film, as the screenplay (by Hyams) and the acting is for the most part atrocious, but the plot is just so interesting (it's not much, but it has nice little "what ifs" throughout) I have to recommend it.Shaun

I rented The Reivers a few months ago to hear the score by Williams. The box said Lalo Shifrin also, but the credits said Williams. Must have been a printing error.
And the music has Williams trademark style.NP Dinosaur Really nice score

JJH, indeed John Williams composed the (Oscar nominated) score for The Reivers. It's one of his very best works.I've never seen The Cassandra Crossing, but Capricorn One is one of my very favorite movies. I know a lot of people find a great many faults with it, but I'm not one of them. I think it's a wonderfully entertaining movie, and I never tire of watching it. Peter Hyams' script provides just about everyone with lots of tongue-in-cheek banter in the midst of his serious thriller. In fact there's so much comic quipping throughout that the film nearly qualifies as a comedy. Hal Holbrook, as the villian of the piece, has two truly memorable scenes that have always captivated me (but then I'm a long-time Holbrook fan).
Capricorn One is a fun, popcorn movie propelled by a great musical score, and topped by one of those satisfying endings that makes you wish you could've been there to see what happens next.
I love it!posted 06-08-2000 08:54 PM PT (US)

"Cassandra Crossing" is one of those awful italian productions shot with an international cast in "I need money to pay my rent" performances.
The plot's absurd and incredible paranoic. The FX are laughable.
And it's directed by George Pan Cosmatos...
Do I need to say more??Yes, it's an undeniable trash pleasure...

I rather liked Cassandra Crossing *duck*It's got the "moving train" bonus - I'm always fascinated if the story of a movie takes place on a moving train. The plot may be a bit hair-rising, but if it's well-made, I don't have a problem with this.
I also liked Capricorn One, but I have to say that while I wouldn't call any of these two movies "great", I consider them both equally good.

I agree completely with Andre Lux regarding Cassandra Crossing. And it has a strangly low bugdet feel about it despite so many big name stars. In the same strata as Twilight's Last Gleaming. The score is great but desperately needs a rercording as the Italian orchestra just couldn't keep up on the OST.Capricorn One is fairly imaginative premise that is never fully exploited in Hyam's film. Seminal Goldsmith score though.
