If only I would have waited another 5 minutes to climb into the shower. After getting out I notice my answering machine flashing. A message from the "gang" in Detroit. They all got to meet Jerry Goldsmith personally. (Oh, Brad, Timmer, Marion, and the rest, what was I thinking not going?) ARRRHHHH!! So HAPPY for the guys.

Wow, so Mark got through (sort of) eh? Yes, Joan ... you were missed. You and Chris and anyone else who wasn't there. Myself, Hatfield, Rocco, Howard L, Rutheford and his friend Tony tore up Detroit. I've only just gotten home. It was the experience of a lifetime, let me tell you! The concert was fabulous, and Mr. Goldsmith was INCREDIBLY friendly ... happy to shake hands, sign autographs, pose for pictures, and exchange a few kind words with his devoted fans. And to top it all off, five people I've exchanged text-based banter with for almost two years have become real-life faces and voices. One of the most positive experiences I've had in a LONG time!I know Rocco and Howard are both working on THEIR versions of what happened. (They took copious notes.) I'm tired and I want to go to bed, so any further discussion will have to wait until tomorrow.
God bless you all! And GOOD NIGHT!

A few things from "the Front"......I am writing to you from a Kinko's Copy center in the Renaissance Center, a quasi-mall that also houses the Marriott that "H Rocco" and I are staying at. I have a GLACIAL typing speed; at $12/hour for Internet access, I must be brief - but some things just MUST be said!!!
First off, meeting Shaun (and his friend Tony, who will have a Hasn't Posted Much under his name when he starts hanging out here), John, Howard, and the estimable H Rocco has been a special thrill. Very emotional stuff!! All are great guys that every one of you really WOULD want to know. I was so amped up about this that I didn't sleep a wink Wednesday night before my flight. As it turned out, I didn't get an opportunity to sleep until Friday morning at around 2am.....I was quite sleepy by then. I had absolutely no problem recognizing Shaun, Howard, H Rocco, or John: all of them just WERE, you know? I mean, OF COURSE Howard was Howard - you could just tell. I will limit the rest of my comments about the gang at this time; while I have wonderful and far more complex things to say about each, I wouldn't want to steal friend Rocco's (or Howard's) thunder. A few of us know how well Rocco can write, and it looks like he is planning an essay of sorts.
Of course, anything that the two of them have to say about me are SLANDEROUS AND MISLEADING ALLEGATIONS FOR WHICH I WILL REQUIRE A FULL RETRACTION. Just so you know.
The concert itself (last night at 8) was sublime. There was a veneer of unreality to the experience: was I ACTUALLY sitting here, with ACTUAL friends that I had met on-line (in a marvelous bit of serendipity, Shaun and Tony had seats right next to Rocco and I......what're the odds?!), watching the orchestra tune for the maestro who got me started on all of this when I was 13 years old? Lord. This world gets both bigger and smaller all the time, as I have said to a friend. Again, I will leave most of the color on this to Rocco and Howard. I CAN tell you that I now simply MUST have THE MUMMY, MACARTHUR, and FIREWORKS!!
Truth of it is, I thought often of my dear friends Joan, Brad, and Patrick (you know who you are!). John had been EXTREMELY helpful in our quest to seek out autographs and/or handshakes from The Great Man (thanks, John!), so I stopped by a music store here in the aforementioned quasi-mall and picked up some Goldsmith CD's to have signed (in addition to the two I had already brought, LOGAN'S RUN and the expanded STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE). Joan, Brad, and Patrick: you now own signed Goldsmith CD's, that I will send to you just as soon as I get home (you'll have to work it out amongst yourselves as to Who gets What). Jeron, Dantoris, and Marian: I have your programs from the event, and will seek to get them signed at tonight's show or after Sunday's performance. Yeah, Rocco and I are going to both.....I never claimed to be less than obsessive about this! Anyway, I really DID think about y'all (alas, no toast - room sevice here closes at 11pm, goshdarnit!). You have come to be an important community of friends for me, and Joan/Brad/Patrick: I love you.
BTW, Brad - I need your "snail mail" address again, to send your CD to. E-mail me with it & I'll send it just as soon as I have gotten home.
There is SO much more to say! I'll file something after Rocco and Howard have had their say - both are undoubtedly better writers than I! - as I think I will have a different perspective than either of these worthies. I will say this: shaking Mr. Goldsmith's (TINY!) hand was simply not as special as hugging John, Shaun, Howard, Tony and Rocco. While I adore Mr. Goldsmith's music and his self-effacing manner, I Love my friends.
Take care, all. I'll try to check in tomorrow. Brad & Joan, we'll "dish" via phone when I get back; Jeron, Marian, and Dantoris: I will do my military best to get you each a signed program. Do please e-mail me with your addresses, okay?
No "rubbing it in" from THIS fella. I miss you and regret only that I couldn't have met you all, and seen all of your faces after this fine musical performance.
Maybe John Williams at the Bowl in August?
Yours,

It seems as though we're all going to be writing from different places than our homes (I'm writing from my girlfriend's house, as my internet is down), but I just wanted to chime in here.TO MARK HATFIELD: Thank you, sir, for being one of the kindest, most jovial human beings I've ever had the pleasure of meeting. You're a good man, and I'm glad as hell I got to meetcha!
TO H ROCCO: Speak up, man! Didn't hear enough from you! I want to hear more "hush hush" material! Goes without saying that it was great finally meeting you!
TO HOWARD L: Shut up, man! I'd be willing to bet you're still "riffing" on every word somebody says (example, someone said "We're so sorry" and Howard IMMEDIATELY chimed in---right before I was about to say it, of course---"Uncle Albert...")! Tony remarked that you were the eldest of the bunch, but you were the most obnoxious! That's a compliment, but I'm going to credit Tony for that so you don't hate me.
TO WEDGE: Have fun in with the first Olympians and all that, you bastard! I think that "bastard" was my favorite word while I was in Detroit. Weird. Anyway, keep up the good work! I'll try and get a copy of your story so you can give it a signin'!
TO JJH: Medicine Man is a go, pal.
I'd write more, but I just wanted to get my two cents in before everybody forgot I was there. I need attention. Just kidding......hey, look at me! Yippee!!!
I still can't get over the fact that because I said words, Jerry Goldsmith had a thought process to think of something to say back.
(as Jerry's walking away from his adoring fans)
SHAUN (or ME): Lookin' forward to The Hollow Man, Jerry!
JERRY: I'm looking forward to FINISHING it!
I thought it was neat that Jerry sat up front with the driver for his ride home.
These are just random thoughts. Once I get home, maybe I'll think of something else to add.
Oh, Joan! Hi! I'm Shaun.
And to all of the people who are "lurkers" on this board and never post, come out of the woodwork, my new friends! It was great meeting you guys....now start posting!
Have a great day, each and every one of you!

Howdy, pardners! In the interest of efficacious time management and fiscal responsibility, we (H Rocco, Howard, and myself) will ALL be writing on this post under my headline. We'll be careful to identify ourselves prior to putting our two cents' worth in. Me first!Mark Hatfield: THANK YOU very much for the kind words, Shaun. We might all say the same of you, pal. I genuinely enjoyed meeting you; and honestly, I missed you today. Altoona is just not far enough away to shield you from the warmth of my thoughts, man. Again, thanks. Everyone -- we (the aforementioned trio) attended this evening's concert. After the sensory overload of yesterday, the music itself stood more to the forefront for me today. As I have said, I will be both brief & general in deferrence to Mr.'s Rocco and L. An emotional dossier on myself and my FRIENDS will follow soon. BTW: leave it to Howard to CORRECT Jerry Goldsmith on his using "TrekkIES" in his between-sets banter, instead of the more proper (!!!) "TreKKERS". Some people's kids! I'll turn you over to someone else now. Love you all & we'll talk some more soon.
And heeeeeerzzz.....
H ROCCO
Shaun, I didn't have much to say. You heard most of it before anyway. Besides, I'm askeered of crowds.
Re: your characterization of Mark Hatfield: you describe him well, and yet don't really know the half of it. He'd already become one of my very best friends (and I mean VERY BEST FRIENDS) just by e-mail and the occasional telephone conversation; hanging out in person has cemented it. Certainly the most important friend I have made in, easily, four years. Sitting with him at the concerts has also given me an insight into what it feels like to see such a thing for the first time, and in the same instance, to discover a whole new community of kindred spirits. All this, and more besides, in the upcoming Report (to start Tuesday, I imagine.)
You're quite right about his embraces, by the way, they're real rib-crackers. A few more pounds of pressure, and they'd be back-smashers as well.
And as for Howard L: again, you don't know the half of it. I've just spent an unbroken hour with the guy, and it should be classified as some kind of aerobic exercise. Over to you, Howard.
"Tony remarked that you were the eldest of the bunch, but you were the most obnoxious!"
HOWARD L WOULD LIKE TO RESPOND:
Shaun, you really HAVE come of age with that DELIBERATE (yeah, right) 1776 reference re "obnoxious". Let me return with my own, to wit "He's also the youngest." Mr. Kinsinger/Dickinson will assist in the interpretation should you require any assistance. And as for the Italian Stallion, he's just trying to get even for my remembering one of his rare appearances on the "other" 'board.
Anyway, last September some of y'all may recall a "cyberplay" written by mi amigo W. Knight. Today I made the pilgrimmage to Canada and the play suddenly takes on the aspect of prophecy fulfilled. I will leave it at that. Mr. Rutherford, I am going to shock you here by stating the events that began last week in Clearwater and remain in-progress here in Detroit have left me too stunned to speak. I will probably not be able to write about it for at least a week or 2. Seriously. This has all been and continues to be an incredibly moving experience in so many ways...
To "quote" H Rocco in another piece, I don't want this weekend to end.
Mark Hatfield, again, briefly: short of time, short of money, long on great memories and fellowship, I and we are signing off. Love to all.
Goodnight, Mrs. Calabash, wherever you are!

Hey Guys!
Finally! I not only met some former, filmscoremonthly.com message board posters but I was directed to this website to re-establish communication! Yippee! After Lukas killed his message board I was disconnected from everyone. Well, that all changed on Friday night at the Detroit Symphony Hall.
First off, Goldsmith was amazing in concert! The DSO sounded incredible! I was blown away by the crisp and flawless performance. However, the real treat for me was meeting Goldsmith and telling him that it was an honor. I even got a couple of photos with him. I still have to develop them. Wedge, you will definately get your photo when they are developed!
But the real gem was when I handed Goldsmith the cd insert to the score Powder. I have gotten a lot of flak for loving this score. A guilty pleasure? No way! Yet, many people give me that look of incredulity when I tell them it is one of my favorites. Well guess what you nay-sayers? Goldsmith took one look at my choice for an autograph template and said, "Ooooo! I love this one! One of my favorites." Yeah Baby! I feel totally vindicated.
I really wish that I had a chance to talk some more to all of you that were there to meet Mr. Goldsmith after the concert. Shaun, Wedge, and the others I met, I hope we can maintain the brief dialogue we started. You guys were very mature and extremely warm to me. Although I sort of felt like an outsider. All of you have been talking to each other here for some time and know each other and I have only just arrived...
I hope you guys are doing great and are still on cloud 9 after making one of our shared dreams come true! Take care and have fun!

Hello, everyone (and especially to our "lurkers".....yes, we did meet 'em.....more on that below).Right off the bat, let me tell you that WE CONNECTED WITH JAMES!!! I had actually made a sign that said, "SEEKING "JAMES" FROM MOVIEMUSIC.COM". I looked and waited before the concert and at intermission. No luck. I waved my "special" hand around (no doubt looking quite insane): to no avail. After the performance, we all tore over to the side exit for more chat with Mr. Goldsmith, and autographs. After he signed some more programs for me - well, they were actually for other folks around here that asked for them - I saw a young man standing there, waiting to have his copy of PATCH OF BLUE signed (excellent taste, this one!). As I wrote about meeting John, Shaun, Henry Romanov, and Howard, it just HAD to be him.
So I asked.
"You wouldn't be James, would you?"
It was.
Nice dude. As with most of the rest of us, this was something of a Pilgrimmage for him. I will not presume to tell you too much about him, as with "H Rocco", since that is for him to say.....or not. I will say this: a very pleasant, mannered, and interesting guy, who seems to have a bright future ahead of him. A SPECIAL NOTE TO THE FSM-HATERS OUT THERE: it may well have happened before, but an "FSM person" has now met and shaken hands with a "MovieMusic.com person". We got along pretty well, I think; James and his companion accompanied Howard, Rocco, and I to a nearby restaurant (thanks for the recommendation, Brad!). I am further pleased to report that they shared in our toast to absent friends - Finally! Champagne! - and that Howard and I bought their meals. Quite frankly, people, this can work out here. It really doesn't HAVE to be "Us" versus "Them".
Ask James.
We are all elated from the events of this weekend - Shaun, I missed you again; You too, John - and saddened by its end. Howard and Rocco are up in the room right now, and I will join them shortly for some last bonding & heartfelt goodbyes. The music sure has been great, folks. Inspiring, transporting, magical.
But the fellowship has been even better.
My love to all. I sincerely hope that this type of thing begins to happen more often - I know I'll get to as many as I can - because our mutual passion for this music, and the exclusivity of the hobby, make a community of FRIENDS a very desirable thing, indeed.
Joan, Brad, Patrick: let's meet sometime.
Jeron, Dantoris, Marian, Thor, Scott, and others here: same thing.
Shaun, Tony, and John: it was an honor, and a real joy, to have met you. I really will remember it forever. I pray that God and fortune put us in each other's way again, and soon.
My words for Rocco and Howard will be delivered in person momentarily, where I know that the tears welling as I write will find unfettered paths down my cheeks.
I have said it before, and mean it:
I Love You guys.
Mark

Ditto that for me (the souvenir thing)! Now, having read through this thread, I find myself peculiarly touched. I never thought this would happen to me and my "distant" internet relationship, but this has in many ways prooved that once a "community" is established in this new interactive medium (be it moviemusic.com or filmscoremonthly.com), the road to "real life encounter" is not that long.
Although only a few of the board regulars were able to attend this event, I'm sure the ones that were there, have thought about this some more - that these creatures, at first anonymous internet handles, in actuality were humanbeings with distinct real-life personalities.
If you remember, this latter thing is what I aimed at over at the "other board" - constant posts about age, work, location etc. in order to give you guys a "face".
Anyways, I'm thankful for this resume (I'm sure more will follow), because although I'm saddened by the fact that I was (and probably forever will be - considering my geographical location and financial position) unable to attend such a once-in-a-lifetime experience, I now know that it is feasible, which is great.
Best,
Thor J.

I'm so happy! I'm so lucky! The opportunity to meet and spend time with so many BEAUTIFUL human beings was one for which I am truly blessed. Mark said it right when he said that Goldsmith ended up being secondary to this event. The real treasure was the rare human connection. It always will be. I'm seriously all choked up right now. How I would have loved to stay longer! But I must be thankful for my time. Hey, James! I am SO GLAD you made it!!! And I'm sorry I missed you! And HEY, HOWARD! You didn't say nuthin' about STRATFORD! I NEVER pass up an opportunity to swing by STRATFORD!
I share your prayer that this most-enriching experience can come again soon, Mark. It may be years ... it may be decades ... but I hope, I HOPE it comes. And even if it doesn't, I'm touched for the better. NO regrets!
And to those who could not go, for whatever reason, please don't feel left out. I'm thankful to know you all, even on a "simple" messageboard community. It means a lot to me that we have this place.

I cannot even begin to express the odd feelings of LOSS I am being overwhelmed with at missing such an incredible opportunity to meet you guys. Having been to three Goldsmith concerts already (and the SPFM dinner), it wouldn't have been about the music for me (although hearing it performed live...again...would no doubt have been icing on the proverbial cake). It pleases me (but does not surprise me in the least) to hear all of the wonderful accolades and tributes being heaped upon each other by those who went to the concert.Shaun, I am green with envy...I would have loved to have met you and Tony...after all, I've heard so much...

Mark Hatfield, although we have never spoken (either online or any other medium), I feel as if we are bonded somehow, through Brad. You see, Brad is one of my dearest friends and one of the most beautiful people I have ever encountered in my life. Being that you and he are friends, I feel compelled to throw my friendship at you.To Daniel S and solarwnz: WELCOME TO THE FAMILY!!
I truly wish to have had the opportunity to be there with you guys...it sounds like a once-in-a-lifetime event...hopefully, it won't be.
If you have an EXTRA program, Jack...I would be greatly appreciative and honored!!
Congrats to all of you who went...and thank you!!! For those of us who couldn't make it, your retelling of the tale has warmed out hearts and brought smiles to our faces.
Joe
