My father is a die hard classical music fan, too. Which, as I wrote above, accidentally introduced me to movie music. But he is no film freak. In fact, it was the scores that made me a film freak.

It was a process, of course, but HIGH NOON may well have been the "seminal" turning point.

I find that process thingie rather intersting. As I said, my introduction to film scores was a 180 degrees turn. No process.

    Lou: Impressive.

It all started when I finished watching Superman The Movie, I've been a fan of the film for a long time and when it was shown in Jan 1997 on TV in its butchered picture edition I decided that I'm gonna buy it.

So, one Saturday in January 97, at around 5:30pm I went to HMV, top floor, the soundtrack section, I found my baby there, SUPERMAN THE MOVIE waiting for me. I picked it up and looked at the price, £17:99!! WHAT?? Too expensive, I was sweating, I didn't want to pay that much for it. But, I had to take the plunge, so I did buy it. I went home, played the MAIN TITLE. I was hooked. But I wasn't a film music fan just yet, it was new ground, should I buy something else? Do I know if I like film music? I don't know, I love the Superman score.
In April 1997, Empire Strikes Back opened, I loved the score, so I decided that I'm gonna throw more money away, I decided I'll buy the soundtrack. I got the deluxe edition, which cost me £35.00 YIKES!!! But it was worth it, from then on, I began slowly getting into the film music world.

Then I found FSM and fan sites and here I am.
I'm glad I took the risk with SUPERMAN.

Thanks for reading, there will be a test later, class.

Stefan, great rant! You touched on many things I agree with, yet didn't dwell on anything! Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee! And where can I get that stuff you're on?

My first real interest in film music was MIDI's from the Super Nintendo Star Wars and Indiana Jones games. I would just listen to the sound test modes where you could listen to any piece of music from the games. At the time I did not have a CD player so I never really thought much about buying the music since I didn't like cassettes.

My first real score was from the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode, The Best of Both Worlds which I bought on cassette for some reason I don't remember. Eventually when I finally talked my parents into getting a CD player, I bought the scores to Jurassic Park, Star Trek: V, and Star Trek: Generations.

    Graham,

I was on a lot of beer (the good dark kind) and wrote that post after spending the night listening to the entire B. Spears album at the local bar. I couldn't take it so...

    It was good beer though.

For me it was Goldfinger and The Man From U.N.C.L.E., so it was a real blast having Goldsmith perform U.N.C.L.E. in Detroit.
