One of the CDR,s I,m putting together is
a collection of Goldsmiths light hearted
cues, an area we talk little about. Now days
most scores are heavy hitters and the light
score, when it does appear, comes from fun
situtation films if it is not full of rock
crushing songs. One of my favorites not on
CD but I,ve recorded from VHS is IQ. The cue
during the test squence is one of my faves.
Some scores have nice local flavor, Moon Over Parador by Jarre comes to mind. Fun scores like Hatari and the Burbs are hard to
come by and I need to dig in my older material to have a smile on my face while
    working.
If you wanted to relax and put a smile on
your face today, what would you put on?

FLINT man! If "Your Zowie Face" doesn't bring a smile what will? Older breezy Goldsmith suggestions for your compliation? Why not The Great Train Robbery, Dennis The Menace, Mom And Dad Save The World?

One of my all-time faves: Broughton's "Heart of Darkness". That rollicking, bouncy theme will always put a smile on my face.

I am listening to Leviathan right now and "A Lot Better" is a whole lot of heroic fun.

Plus, just about any Shaiman score, besides Misery, can be fun, light-hearted, and easy listening. Perhaps Out-of-Towners?

logied, what cues do you already have planned to put on the Cd-r?

    NP: Goldsmith's "Leviathan"

Saw the topic and was going to write "Fierce Creatures", but was late to the party as usual.....

THE GREAT RACE by Mancini; a whole buncha his collaborations with Blake Edwards could do nicely here.

    BIG by Shore

RAISING ARIZONA by Burwell (love that yodeling!)

    SPLASH by Holdridge

    Have fun!

"Crocodile" Dundee is a pretty fun, easy-going score. So are some trucks on Six Days, Seven Nights, especially the first few.

Goldsmith's boisterous THE (FIRST) GREAT TRAIN ROBBERY (a clear precursor of the abovementioned DENNIS THE MENACE). Parts of James Horner's JOURNEY OF NATTY GANN. (Strange, reflecting on this, how melancholy so much of Horner's work is.) HOME ALONE by John Williams. Pretty much any of the Bond scores by John Barry. THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO LITTLE by Christopher Young. Goldsmith's FLINT scores. CASINO ROYALE by Burt Bacharach (not even close to being one of my favorite composers, but that album's a fun listen). And so on.

I don't have any Shaiman scores except for HEART AND SOULS, which is wonderful. Although SOUTH PARK was, I thought, the best score of 1999, I don't have the song album yet, because I haven't found it for cheap. I've heard tantalizing rumors that Shaiman might do a promo of just the score ... sure hope so. I'd happily buy both. I'd buy em both full price, if I felt I had that kind of cash. (And who knows what the future holds ...)

NP: RUNAWAY (Goldsmith's first all-synth score -- and just as I type this, it's started up "Lockons," one of his all-time best action cues, I think, even if it IS all electronic! He was paying attention to the depths and textures that WERE possible with synths, and doing a damned good job with them. Although the overall score does sound faintly antique now, given the advances that have been made in electronic instruments.)

Ooh. Mancini's "Great Race" is...um...a great one. In the same vein, Mancini's "What Did You Do in the War, Daddy?" is also pretty fun.

    NP: Carter Burwell: "Conspiracy Theory"

I want to hear Young Sherlock Holmes VERY badly! Pietari, people say this theme is similar to his theme for Heart of Darkness. What do you think? Is it similar? If so, is it better?

    S Smith mentions Conspiracy Theory.

The Mancini-esque "Overture" surely deserves a nomination.

Also have to mention JNH's Space Jam. It's nothing the eminent Carl Stalling hadn't already achieved 50 years ago, but it's great fun nonetheless.

...and of course the Carl Stalling CDs on Warner Bros., if you can find them.

My apologies, Mark. It's like a involuntary reflex. Another good score: LIAR LIAR.
It may be Howard's theme, but it's Debney's show.

Bruce Broughton's Honey I Blew Up the Kid is some of the loveliest orchestral writing from last decade. I know it's old-fashioned and of appeal only to old farts over 26, but it has heart and grandstanding showmanship. It's still cluttering up Circuit City bins. Get it.

    Al,
I haven´t heard Heart of Darkness yet, but knowing Broughton´s scoring style, I presume that they are quite similar. YSH is definitely worth seeking out, great theme, great choral stuff and more.

I'd mention some of the soundtracks released in the 60s which ditched most of the dramatic underscore in favour of embellished versions of the source cues. Things like Mancini's Charade, Arabesque and Breakfast At Tiffany's, or Schifrin's The Liquidator. They're great to listen to, but it's about time we got to hear what was actually in the films.

I also have a soft spot for Lady In Cement (Hugo Montenegro) and some Dudley Moore scores such as 30 Is A Dangerous Age Cynthia and Bedazzled ("Oooh Oooh, I'm bedazzled!" "You fill me with inertia.")
