    Okay, well, I sorta jumped the gun here, but it seemed like everybody (even on the old board) was getting to create this topic, so I wanted to do it for once, and did it early just incase somebody beat me to the punch. I suppose you'll officially start posting on Thursday, but I'll get things rolling, with a slight twist. Why not included what non-score CDs we've bought, as well as movies.

    Score:
    Battlefield Earth - Elia Cmiral (Simply amazing. This guy is sure to be sought-after before long. To read my official review, check out the entry for the CD here in the MovieMusic database. It should be up as soon as PeterK gets back).

    Non-score:
    Brian Regan Live (Without a doubt, this guy is THE funniest comic I've ever heard. Covering everything from sealbelts to blasting zones, fishing on TV to spider webs & bees, this album, within the first two minutes, will have you rolling on the floor in a state of hysteria that'll make your parents/friends quickly calling an ambulance.)

    Movies:
    The Sweeper (VHS) - C. Thomas Howell, Jeff Fahey (And you thought The Rock had action!)
    The Silencers (VHS) - Jack Scalia (On order from Suncoast. Rented it a few weeks ago. What other movie gives you a 10min.+ action sequence involving a huge fuel tanker, numerous military and pedestrian vehicles, tons of explosions, and a helicopter, the fate of it would amaze and susprise anyone watching)

    Well, it's not June yet but what's the point of adding my only two purchases from the end of May at the end of 70+ thread.

    GLADIATOR ****/*****: it finally got released here in Belgium. Great score to a great movie. I think it perfectly fits to the movie. A score such as Rosza's would've been completley misplaced in this realistically filmed movie.

    JESUS ****/****: great emotional score.

    Why, dantoris, you son of a b-tch!

    No, seriously, here are a few more additions from the far north:

    * TO DIE FOR (Elfman)

    A nice score, incorporating choir and heavy metal grooves. Unneccesary songs tacked on to the end of the CD.

    * THE 13TH WARRIOR (Goldsmith)

    THE MUMMY-companion with a higher emphasis on turbulence over melody.

    * BANDA SONORAS DE PECULAS ESPANOLAS (2CD, various)

    A great set of 7 full scores by renowned spanish composers such as José Nieto, Alberto Iglesias and Angel Illaramendi.

    Thor: What are those Jose Nieto scores? I have that double CD that Varese put out of the Seville concerts conducted by Nieto and Maurice Jarre, and I really liked his stuff.

    I don't have anything new for June as yet, but have been promised quite a few presents in Detroit ...

    Effective today, my checkbook receives a well-deserved, month-long moratorium on purchasing any music. I needed it, considering my extravagance of the last two months, and because I've hardly been able to explore all my new acquisitions properly.

    But wouldn't you know it, the day my moratorium begins, Intrada's new releases list comes out with the two new Marco Polo releases--which I must have (if only because I want to keep my MP collection complete)! Oh well, I just have to assume that nobody's breaking down the doors to get at the latest Georges Auric and Roy Webb albums--and maybe on July 1 I'll have to give myself a healthy musical treat.

    By the way, welcome, Lee!

    I just received Dr Jekyll and Ms. Hyde and it was not what I was expecting. I heard so many good things about it and the audio clip on Intrada was fantastic but the majority of the score is recycled music from Hook and The Witches of Eastwick. Maybe it will get better with repeated listenings.

    Yeah, Lou, I like the CD (conducted by Alywn). I principally got it for the SCROOGE suite, but the other music is very nice. Particular standouts being BLITHE SPIRIT (the waltz reminded me of Herrmann's score for THE SNOWS OF KILIMANJARO - from what I've heard, Addinsell really excelled at writing waltzes), GASLIGHT, WALTZ OF THE TOREADORS, WRNS MARCH, and SOUTH RIDING and FIRE OVER ENGLAND were excellent. I'm generally not too fond of compilations, but this was pretty good.

    Thor: I have the Maurice Jarre/Jose Nieto Concerts in Seville CD that Varese put out, and enjoyed the Nieto parts way more than I did the Jarre music (I have all of that on other compilations, where the performances are far better). I've heard good things about Nieto before, but the Seville disc (which I bought in 1992) was my introduction to the man. I'd buy his PASSION IN THE DESERT just out of curiosity, if I could find a cheap enough copy. You couldn't quite call me a "fan" yet, but I'm an interested party.

    What I've cadged this first week in June:

    SUPERMAN (Williams, expanded OST)
    TWILIGHT ZONE THE MOVIE (Goldsmith)
    GREMLINS (Goldsmith)
    ALIENS (Horner, expanded)
    BIG (Howard Shore)
    GALAXY QUEST (David Newman)
    THE EXORCIST (OST version coupled with rejected Lalo Schifrin cues)
    THE BLACK HOLE/HOWARD THE DUCK (Barry)
    RAISE THE TITANIC (Barry)
    SLEEPY HOLLOW (Elfman)
    RAMBO II (Goldsmith, expanded)

    and, not exactly new, but recently signed by the Composer himself, and so are in a sense new to ME:

    SPFM TRIBUTE TO JERRY GOLDSMITH (issued 1993, signed June 2, 2000)

    FIRST BLOOD (purchased 1989, signed June 2, 2000)

    NP: ALIENS expanded (I KNOW it's derivative, but you can't make me stop liking it)

    I have an CDR of it thanks to JJH, but wanted to get the real deal.

    Thanks go to Alex, who ordered this from me, since it was almost impossible for me to do so myself.

    More trash dumped in my mailbox (who's doing this, anyway?):

    * CONCERT WORKS (Williams)

    A bootleg plagued with pops, digital hisses and "muffled" sound that nevertheless displays some of Williams' finest works. Very modernistic.

    * FANFARES AND THEMES (Williams)

    Another poor-sounding boot with music from NBC NEWS and various other non-soundtrack compositions. From the heroic to the challenging (e.g. "The Wind Sinfonietta").

    * CROCODILE DUNDEE (Best)

    Picked up by moviemusic.com recommendations. A fun, easy-going listen in the pop meets instrumental-mode. Is this the Pete Best of Beatles-fame?

    * ARMAGEDDON (Rabin)

    I loved the superpatriotic main theme, but did not expect the spanish inquisition...I mean, a rock album when I bought it. Too many el guitars, and not enough dramatic refinement. But has its highlights.

    Picked up quite a number of scores at a local used CD score the other day. All of these were only $1.99:

    The Nightmare Before Christmas (Elfman): Been wanting this one for a while. Not one of Elfmans best, but definatly worthy of the price I payed.

    The Silence of the Lambs (H. Shore): Man, this is one of the most dark, deep, orchestrally thick scores I've ever heard. Definatly suitable for Hannibal Lector.

    Rob Roy (C. Burwell): Burwell is quickly becoming one of my favorite composers. This is a really good score, though different from the majority of his.

    Conspiracy Theory (Burwell): Upon first listen, this is probably my least favorite Burwell score I've heard so far. Just doesn't click with me.

    Lonesome Dove (Basil Poledouris): Have the original version, but wanted to get this for the extra tracks. One of my all-time favorite themes.

    First Blood (Goldsmith): Couldn't believe I got this one for $1.99, since it's getting pretty rare now. Too bad I don't like it very much. Part II is much better.

    Sommersby (Elfman): Can't believe I didn't pick this one up sooner. It's been sitting in the used CD store for ever. One of Elfmans very best.

    Also got these one's yesterday:

    The Vanishing (Bootleg) Goldsmith
    Ransom (Rejected Score) H. Shore
    I.J. and the Last Crusade (Complete) J. Williams
    The War of the Buttons (R. Portman)

    NP: Hamlet (Burwell) 5/5

    Hey, Captain, can you tell me a bit about Shore´s Ransom rejected score? I´ve been meaning to get it for awhile, but Shore is a miss-and-hit composer for me. Though I am curious

    Thanks!

    pietari:

    If you've heard "The Silence of the Lambs", you've heard this score. Not that it's exactly the same, but it's basically just dark, brooding string work. There are a couple good action cues, but overall, it's pretty standard.

    The bootleg is VERY high quality. It has great sound quality and 25 tracks, totalling 60 minutes of music. If you like Shore and "Silence of the Lambs", you'll probably like this score. If you don't fit into this category, you should avoid it.

    NP: Dinosaur 4.5/5
