I am looking to buy "The Godfather". Is it best to buy all three soundtracks, just the first, or "The Godfather Suite"?

I do not personally own all the discs you are asking about. However, I do have the soundtrack from the first film. It has a pretty good selection of the music from the film. The Part II disc I have seen, but I haven't really jumped at it. I guess it depends on how much you really like Rota. For these films, he basically used the same underscore, and in Part 3, it's all mostly Carmine Coppola's reworking of previous themes. Coppola wrote all the "incidental" Italian source music. Also some of the music used in the films themselves came from a score Rota had used for an Italian film.I think the "Suite" is one of those early Silva things which can be spotty sometimes. If you don't need to shell out more than $10 and you really like the music it probably will be fine.

I'd say get the first two IMMEDIATELY!!!I must disagree with Mr. Sakman's comments regarding the second film's score. There is a myriad of new material for that film, including the operatic "The Immigrant" theme.
The third is diverting, but Nino Rota's absence is very noticable.
I love these scores (and films), and you can find some reviews and comments here:

It's the weakest of the available "Godfather" albums.

Well I recently purchased both the first and second score. If you liked the music, then get both.BTW, the BMG Music CD Club has both of them available. So if you go there at the right time you can get both at an extremely low price.
