I KNOW that there are other posts covering aspects of The Event (which is exactly how I have come to think of it; c'mon, Goldsmith and Howard and Rocco - oh my!). However, I am getting the pre-game antsies. I have already arranged to meet Henry Romanov; what about the rest of you? I will be there starting mid-afternoon on Thursday, and will stay through Monday, so I have plenty of time to meet all you folks that are willing (and stop right there in mid-carp, Rocco my man -- we'll be staying up until 0-dark-thirty watching GAPPA & MATANGO!).Do y'all want to get together pre-show (dinner, or something), or post-show (booze, or something), or both, or what? My honest apoligies to Wedge: I am NOT trying to horn in on your Emcee/host role! I just have never been straw-polled about this, and would like to start one. Additionally: does anyone know if Mr. Maestro signs autographs? Yeah, I know I am fan-boy pathetic on this one.....but if there is ANY chance, I'd like to know!
Oh, and Howard: Yes, on the Sunday performance -- IF you can handle being next to Rocco & yours truly.
I think it can only help Wedge if we give some sort of indication of HOW & WHEN we would like to meet, guys. Personally, I am open to most anything, but would like to do dinner and/or post-show beverages. I'd really like the chance to speak to y'all -- I mean, how many times are we REALLY going to get a chance to meet? This of course does not apply to you, H. Romanov, my Brother. We'll be meeting again & again, friend.
Dinner? Drinks? DECIDE.

Here's what I'm thinking, people:Mark and I will be at the Detroit Marriott Renaissance Hotel, only a mile and a half distant from the DSO hall itself. Plus there's a free shuttle bus between the hall and the hotel!
After consultation with Senator Hatfield (as Mr. L calls him -- another 1776 in-joke, I believe), it seems only to make sense to meet at the Hotel -- IF we do not ALREADY figure out a way to meet at the Concert Hall. Hey, the hotel, it's close and easy to reach. There are tons of places to eat around there (and at least on Friday, we're going to do a proper sit-down, people -- no Mickey D's that night). Nothing too expensive or too fussy, just a place where we can sit back and exchange thoughts on the night. (I will be there squiggling busily in my little notebook, mercilessly caricaturing the whole lot of you. Hmm, perhaps that means you won't show. Oh well, there's always me, Mark Hatfarb, and the Gargiebergs.)
The logical place to congregate at first (whether pre-or-post concert, or both) is the hotel bar (I'm assuming there must be one, there always is one). No, Wedge, we're not going to force Jagermeister down your throat, it's simply a place to meet. (Although now that I've SAID we're not going to force Jagermeister down your throat, it seems manifest that the idea's crossed my mind ... perhaps you're right not to want to finalize the plans ...)
Talk it up, gentlemen. (I detect no ladies are going -- Mark's lovely Laura seems unable to attend; at least Bonita, with any luck, will show, with humble Christopher in her wake. We might do that roses thing for Jerry after all, Mrs. K ...)

"In 1968, then-Governor Mark Hatfield was elected to the United States Senate...In August of 1993, he became the longest serving U.S. Senator from Oregon, surpassing the previous record set by Charles McNary."Get it? Anyway, I expect you and the 'Senator' to meet me at Detroit Metro early Friday afternoon and, with boom-box in hand, serenade me with The Man's hellaciously arranged Hoosiers soundtrack as I step off the plane--again, sporting Blues Brothers shades and with raised martini in tow--and then deliver with my best Howard "Oh, that name!" DaSilva impression:
"Good afternoon, all!"

hmmmmmmm...should I just say "To hell with it" and hop on a bus for Detroit next weekend? Poop I'm sure there aren't that many tickets left for the show anyway.

Don't be so sure, Brad. Check the website for the DSO. The Carnegie Hall concert was underattended -- and underpromoted. In the case of the Detroit concert, FSM, for example, isn't even acknowledging it exists (for God knows what reason), and I really doubt it'll be packed to the rafters. It'll be a DECENT turnout, no doubt, but I bet there are people still intending to show up at the last second looking for tickets. They may not get the CHEAPEST ones -- but I bet they'll get em. I didn't buy my Carnegie Hall ticket until less than hour before the event, and there was STILL enough room downstairs to seat me, even though I didn't pay those prices. (The usher actually suggested I just pick a place downstairs rather than climb all the way up to the nosebleed section that I DID pay for, but I didn't feel confident about doing that until the second half. It was worth it, looking at it from both angles, though -- I think I saw more of what the orchestra was physically up to from watching them up above.)NP: PLANET OF THE APES (three cues of this in a row at Carnegie Hall! Didja happen to make that one, Brad?)

I'm from the same country that once praised his very own Korngold as a wunderkind and one of the greatest composers of his time before he was more or less completely forgotten.
