From Jerry Goldsmith On-Line (a nice site that I recommend visiting) comes these bits of news:
Goldsmith reveals exciting LSO ProjectsJerry Goldsmith revealed during a pre concert interview in London that he has been working closely with the London Symphony Orchestra throughout January on an exciting program of his concert work. The recording was made in a new Digital 5.1 CD format (possibly SACD), with the CDs shipping with the new Phillips and Sony players later in the year. The project will culminate in a further CD release of the composer's work to be recorded later in the year. It is hoped both recordings will be available in the standard format, but the composer revealed the new sound is phenomenal. Commenting the recording at the Abbey Road studios had more technicians in the booth than
musicians on the studio floor! The recordings will include Fireworks, Music For Orchestra and Christus Apollo, with Ray Bradbury's text
spoken by Anthony Hopkins!Theme Park Music
Goldsmith has been engaged by Disney to write music for a new Disney Land theme park ride. The project is at a very early stage but details should be forthcoming soon.
Possible Mystery Assignment
Goldsmith takes a first look at a new film for a July 21st release. The movie's title is unknown at this point but the composer revealed it is a romantic drama which the composer is looking at scoring.
London Concerts reveal all
Jerry Goldsmith joked about the possibilities of scoring both the Mummy sequel and the Planet Of The Apes remake. Goldsmith commented due to the frustrating time developing the original score to The Mummy, the composer has been put off from committing to the sequel at this stage. As for Planet Of The Apes, questioned on whether he would score the remake (if asked), he said he would decline saying there would be little more he could say musically on the subject.
During the Star Trek segments performed the composer revealed his discussions with Star Trek creator, Gene Roddenberry. The most intriguing comment being the composer was originally asked to score the original television series!
He also wetted the appetite for The Hollow Man, hinting at a great deal of action material, with the a possibility to return to the scoring stage to write additional music for the newly completed special effects sequences currently being added!posted 05-24-2000 11:40 AM PT (US)

Interesting indeed (though I wish he would return for THE MUMMY 2), but what is the address for this Goldsmith On-Line site?

About the SACD recordings, this is what someone posted on March 15 at the Digital Drive forum at the Audio Asylum website:quote:
...Sony now has a couple of 8 channel recorder/editors which allows for DSD editing. One is currently being used at the Skywalker ranch to edit a DSD recording from the UK of Jerry Goldsmith's Greatest Hits. This editor I also saw used at the mixing session for the DMP "Tango" and Gaudeamus Choir release (upcoming). It will also be used in the editing of a Robert Hohner Percussion Ensemble recording...Hopefully the discs will be dual-layer (SACD and CD formats on the same disc) because I'm not ready to buy an SACD player yet.

I'm not sure if he mentioned the CDs pre-concert, I missed the chats, but he mentioned them DURING the concert too, loosing himself on the techy info "oh it'll give you 5.3, er, I dunno.. whatever, it's good, you'll all want it". lolDan (UK)

VERY cool news! Thanks for sharing. I am greatly looking forward to The Hollow Man- it should be exciting, but I am really anxious to hear Goldsmith back in a softer mode.NP: Jones's "Cleopatra"

This is great news!I'll probably never hear what he comes up with for the Disney ride. We did get lucky, though, with Back to the Future: The Ride and got a re-recording on that Varese BTTF Trilogy.
I'd love to hear those concert recordings... but there is no way that I'd buy one of those CD players. (Just take a look at HDCD(tm)(r), it appears to have been surpassed by a better technology, SACD, already.)

This is going to sound funny but I don't know the direct URL to JG ON-Line. You can get there from the LINKS section of the Deconstructing Goldsmith site which is:

Goldsmith says what he thinks, I like that.
Much more out spoken than any of his colleagues.

Yeah, those pre-concert talks were really interesting. For example, when asked about orchestrators, Goldsmith revealed that he'd just completed a score (which I assumed to be The Hollow Man), which he had completely orchestrated himself! Apparently Hollow Man has around 70 mins of music. I'm looking forward to it very much now. He likened his working relationship with Paul Verhoeven to that with Franlkin J. Shaffner. And we know what gems that pairing produced!
Also, he said that the first disc he recorded in Jan with the LSO will be like a concert programme, something along the lines of the Sountracks of Jerry Goldsmith with the Philharmonia album that was released at the end of the '80s.

What comes out around July 21st that fits "romantic drama"? Doesn't Zemeckis'"What Lies Beneath" release then? Maybe not.

I wouldn't label "What Lies Beneath" as a Romantic Drama... it's more of a Thriller.Jeron

Zemeckis is one of those types who always loves to make a good thriller... just think of "Death Becomes Her".
*shiver*...terrifying!
Seriously though, Zemeckis will probably do a wonderful job with this movie. He's produced horror films such as The Frighteners so I imagine this movie will deliver the chills.

Zemeckis always collaborates with Alan Silvestri, too, so I doubt Goldsmith would be doing "What Lies Beneath" even if it was a romantic drama. As far as I can tell, this is the only movie coming out on July 21st which even remotely fits the genre:
LOSER
Cast: Jason Biggs, Greg Kinnear, Mena Suvari, Twink Caplan, Zak Orth, Tom Sadoski, Jimmi SimpsonDirector/Screenwriter: Amy Heckerling (Clueless, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Look Who's Talking)
Premise: A group of dorm roommaters brand the odd guy out a loser (Biggs), and try to get him kicked out. Meanwhile, he's in love with a girl (Suvari) who is more interested in one of her professors (Kinnear).
Trailer:
(hi-res 160x120)
(hi-res 320x240)I have my doubts, though...
Unless of course Jerry is scoring The Pokemon Movie 2000. Isn't that a romantic drama?

Saw the poster yesterday and David Kitay is scoring Loser (never heard of him before, but he's also scoring Scary Movie). It didn't really look like something Goldsmith would ever be connected with anyway.Maybe he is scoring Pokemon.

I found this page that tells about the recording session that Goldsmith and the LSO did using DSD recording technology for an upcoming SACD release. Hollow Man was recorded via DSD, although since standard CD audio is PCM, the DSD recording is converted to PCM (using Sony's Super Bit Mapping process), so much of the benefit of DSD will not be completely apparent on the CD.
