    Heh, made you look, now didn't I?

    No, seriously, I'm going to Prague for a week now (I'm leaving in a few hours). Meanwhile, I thought you guys could give me some recommendations as to some scores I've seen rather cheap in record stores over here and that I've considered buying. So that I can read 'em and weep when I return, of course (that is what I mean with exploitation)!

    Here they are:

    * ROUNDERS (Young)
    * THE RAINMAKER (Bernstein)
    * ABSOLUTE POWER (Niehaus)
    * AMERICAN BUFFALO/THREESOME (Newman)
    * THE GAME (Shore - remember, I'm not too keen on Shore. Is this a proper intro?)
    * CROCODILE DUNDEE (Best)
    * THE NEGOTIATOR (Revell)

    Rats...There were more, but I don't remember them right now. Oh, well...

    I don't buy a lot of compilations anymore, but here are some that I found, that I thought might be interesting:

    * GODZILLA, VOL. 2 (Silva compilation)
    * MOVIE MONSTER MUSIC ALBUM (or something like that, Silva?)

    OK. See y'all in a week and a half!

    TJ

    The only one I can recommend is CROCIDILE DUNDEE.

    Same here. CROCODILE DUNDEE is a fun listen. I picked it up the instant I saw it, and I'm glad I did, cause I've never seen it in any store again. (Actually, I never even knew there was a soundtrack to this film until I found the CD).

    And while I really enjoyed ABSOLUTE POWER, I can't recall anything about the score.

    But definitely get CROCODILE DUNDEE.

    I recommend anything by Bernstein and Shore. BUT: if you're not too keen on Shore to begin with, than THE GAME should be one of the last scores on your list. The score apart from the movie is probably only something for the already converted Shore aficionado (of which I happen to be one though). It is very very subdued, with a deceptively simple and melancholy main theme intro that's beautiful, but for the most part the score consists of moody and restrained layers of sound... it does work very effectively in the movie but it may not be everybody's favorite CD and is more likely to deter you even more from Shore.

    Scores by Shore that may make you change your mind about him may be his Herrmannesque music for THE FLY, the charmingly weird ED WOOD, or the delightfully warmhearted NOBODY'S FOOL... but not THE GAME.

    One of Shore's loveliest and most accessible scores is PRELUDE TO A KISS, though that may no longer be readily available. Plentiful score, also a couple of really nice songs.

    GODZILLA VOL. 2 -- is that the GNP/Crescendo? You said Silva. I think both of the Crescendo Godzilla albums are complete disasters, but there may be no easier way to introduce yourself to that music -- at least Vols. 1 and 2 are OST. The Silva "Monster Movie Music" album is a debacle and a half. There is ANOTHER such rerecording of various Godzillas and so on that appears to have been produced in Canada, and it's even worse, if that were possible. The Varese MONSTER MANIA is wretchedly played and conducted, as well.

    I don't have the NEGOTIATOR album, but I remember liking the main title. I'm not sure that's Revell's work, though, or made it to the album. I wouldn't, myself, pay more than five bucks for it, and even then, there's too much more important stuff that I'm still missing.

    Revell's NEGOTIATOR is a fine score. It was meant to be similar to Zimmer's action scores, and that is noticeable in the synths and tone. Revell's own style shines in this one though. If you see it for cheap, go ahead and get it.

    stay away from Thomas Newman's American Buffalo/ Threesome Varese CD.

    Thommy Boy has done much better. It's just a dull CD; rather lacking in excitement or joy. If you like that style, instead seek out John & SAM, Unstrung Heroes, and the like. Even with these these scores it sounds like he had fun doing them.

    NP -- Breakout, Jerry who?
