What does everyone think about this strategy of releasing on the part of Dreamworks to cater to every type of listeners for The Prince of Egypt? Well, except the score fans.

There was the country song soundtrack, the R&B version, and a general version (if my memory serves me). Ideally, that's what I would do if I were ever supervise the music for a film, that is, if the studio/record label is insane enough and willing to gamble on the sales.

I would use an orchestral score to tie up all the other kinds of music that would be used in the film (rock, jazz, classics--because some moments are better complemented by songs rather than scores, believe it or not) and release the score separately but at the same release a rock album compiling all the rock songs used, and separate jazz album and classics album doing the same thing. This way, for score fans they wouldn't have to hear the annoying "songs" like every other score/song soundtracks. Many movies have started to split their score releases and song soundtracks, but I would go even further and split even different genres of the music.

The bad side of this would be that these separations would make the listener really close-minded to the other genres of music and they would never expand their musical horizons.

the thing I hate about that strategy is that none of the songs, other than the Mariah Carey & Whitney Houston abomination, were used in the film.

Zimmer actually wrote a darn good score here, but they chopped it up, and I like Schwartz's songs. Don't forget about these Collector's Editions with 2 score tracks tacked onto them.

I finally had to take all the available score, and the real movie songs by Schwartz and make a sort of Original Soundtrack.
Of course, it's not the complete score, and I have no clue where the CE score cut "It is Only Beginning..." fits into the scheme of things.

NP -- Spiegel im Spiegel again. Arvo Pärt always writes about 6 versions of his pieces. interesting, but ultimately annoying

"It is Only Beginning" is the Red Nile scene. Thought I'd clear that up for ya.

I haven't heard the Country and R&B versions, but could anyone tell what the heck they have to do with the movie?

It's like having a hard rock score to a movie like Dances With Wolves or a Jazz score to Godzilla.

The two seperate albums were catered towards Christians and Jews. They were both religiously inspired taken from the theme. The Christian market is exploding right now and Spielberg and Company decided to milk the cow as much as possible. Not that I mind, I bought all three ablums. Didn't look for the Walmart edition, since I wasn't overly impressed by the score.
