Well, it's good at least. Unfortunatley, I got so many CDs recently that I didn't have the time to fully "explore" Antartica. I liked it, but if I listen to it again now, I'll probably like it even better. So, I can't really give a qualified statement yet. Timmer, that's also the reason why I didn't e-mail you to say what I think about it. I think I said that I'm going to do so, and I still want to.

Oh, and as for Bruckner, I'll just repeat that he's my absolute all-time favourite non-film composer.

That's not what I consider "haunting", but if it were, the best example that comes to my mind is the short major passage in the minor "Take her Back Again" on Much Ado About Nothing. One of my favourite moments of film scoring (as is the whole score).

I'll just say it again, cuz I like to repeat myself repeat myself.

    Corigliano's Revolution, main theme.
To me, the essence of what "haunting" in music means.

maybe I'll post an mp3. maybe not. who knows?

    JClark,
What a beautifully haunting piece of music RV Williams 3rd symphony the 'pastoral' is. The following excerpt is from Bryden Thomson's recording of the piece...

Work on this often profoundly calm music began in the midst of war and in France, where Vaughan Williams served as an ambulance driver. On summer evenings in 1916 he would often drive to the top of a certain hill near Ecoivres to enjoy the Corot-like landscape in the sunset. There his third symphony began to take shape, mainly in contemplation though with some external promptings. Sometimes he heard a bugler practising below, occasionally hitting the seventh instead of the octave, and this became the basis of the second movement's trumpet solo. Perhaps, too, the wordless soprano solo which begins and ends the finale was suggested by a girl singing in the fields.

    Marian,
If you haven't heard this piece.....well, you know what I'm saying!

NP : 3rd movement of the above mentioned.

Just listening to Rautavaara's Cantus Articus - Concerto for Birds and Orchestra, thinking this was 'haunting',but it sounds more mystic/eerie than anything!

Anyone else here heard this?,I love it!

    NP : the above.

I've heard it. in fact, I have 2 recordings of it. One on Naxos, and one on either Catalyst or Ondine-- I forget which). Both are superbly atmospheric.

    Timmer,

go out and find John Adams' Violin Concerto. Some may call that haunting; the second movement expecially.

I bet the Detroit meeting is haunting for everyone involved. Hell, I could nearly call it "haunting" myself, although I haven't been there!
