What scene from a film would you say matched the music perfectly?I'm referring to those scenes that immediately come clearly to mind when that piece of music is playing on your CD player.
Any favourites?I personally would go with the entire last fifteen minutes of ET, but if I had to choose a short, definite scene it would be when the Jurassic Park theme is heard when you first see the huge Brachiosaurus in the sunlight.
Any others....I'm sure I'm forgetting a lot.

Off the top of my head:"The Desert Chase" - RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK
"Ben's Death/TIE Fighter Attack" - STAR WARS (every time I listen to it, I can even hear the actors' lines)
"Carbon Freezing Chamber" - THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK (don't have my CD right now to confirm the track title. I can picture every frame of that scene when listening to this track)
Also, the James Bond theme. I can picture Bond cruising down the street in his Austin Martin, kissing some Russian exchange agent and pouring a glass of vodka.

And a lot more I can't think of at the moment.

My favorite (besides ET) would have to be from the end of To Kill a Mockingbird, when Scout sees Boo behind the door. Hearing that beautifully romantic rendition of Boo's theme always gives me goosebumps, and I can almost hear Scout saying "Hey Boo".Excuse me, I have to go listen to a certain CD now.

Any number of cues..."The Murder" (you know where from)
Just about anything from PLANET OF THE APES
THE BLUE MAX cues are all well done.
Just about anything from STAR TREK-THE MOTION PICTURE
NORTH BY NORTHWEST's "Main Title"
Waxman really amazed me with how well he scored a lot of SUNSET BOULEVARD (especially for the time and its then daring portrayal)
I'll conclude with THE SIXTH SENSE's finale.
This list could go on for quite a while....posted 05-17-2000 11:11 AM PT (US)

Though I very rarely purchase a soundtrack without having seen the film first, occasionally I will. EST-OUEST is a recent example.About two weeks ago, EST-OUEST finally came to town, so I was able to see the film (which is good) and hear how the score works in accordance with it. Although Patrick Doyle's music is wonderful in the film, one scene and cue really stand out: "The Escape." Doyle's hypnotic chase music just perfectly captures the threat of danger that the characters face while trying to escape from an oppressive Soviet government under Stalin’s rule. Brilliant music.

THE FURY
(Obviously, I can't emphasize this enough)
Every single scored second.
Over at Reel.com (movie store), they gave the score a 4 on a 10-point-scale. Ridiculous. On a scale of 10 points, this score gets at least 11. The score is really very good on it's own, but in the movie, it beats more or less everything that I've seen. Too bad there isn't a DVD for this one yet. Brilliant!
Also notable are large parts of Doyle's Much Ado About Nothing, especially the overture (perfectly spotted), and "Take Her Back Again" (note the few major bars amidst the rest of the minor track - that's why I like to call Doyle the Master of the Underscore). DVD will be arriving in a few days.

Planet of the Apes too, of course, and Donaggio's Dressed to Kill (yeah, De Palma often has good scores).
NP: Return of the Jedi. What, you didn't believe me that I always play the complete scores?

interesting that Camillu mentions playing Fargo. To me, Burwell's music set against that desolate snowy backdrop is pretty amazing.
NP -- my personal Goldsmith compilation, made when I didn't have many Goldsmith scores. Now I have a gazillion, and still need more.

The Enterprise! How could I forget it? Guess why I'll buy the DVD when it comes out...Also: Star Wars Main Titles, and those of Captain Blood. The former is legendary anyway, and the latter's music just sets the mood for the picture perfectly.
Much of Alien³ and The Lord of the Rings.
Hah, "Strange Funeral" from The Magnificient Seven fits very well, too. And "The Ecstasy of Gold" from Good/Bad/Ugly.
NP: Nothing yet, I'm still thinking what to play.

Hal mentions the opening of the Ark in Raiders....the littlw scene where the spirit turns to a demon, complete with music STILL gives me chills, and it unnerved me as a little kid.

Marian,
Did you know that DePalma wasn't that keen on William's score to the FURY (I think he was pushed by the studio's),and said many years back, that he felt Pino Donaggio would have given him a much better score.
Donaggio,I think would have given a good servicable score!,If he had,I doubt anyone would even mention 'What would John Williams have done with this',considering DePalma's working relationship with Donaggio.I must say here though Marian, that I'm with you 100%, I love Williams score for the FURY, one of my all time faves

I just remebered two more...Run Forrest Run (Silvestri)
The Clash of Lightsabers (Empire Strikes Back - when Vader throws objects at Luke using the force. The music was then put to great use in the Episode 1 Teaser Trailer ["Fear leads to..."]
Though I must say the Carbon Freezing Scene is pretty vivid too.

Timmer: Didn't know that. Donaggio did great scores for De Palma (esp. Dressed to Kill), but wishing to replace what may be Williams' best score is a huge minus for him.Camillu: Yeah, Clash of Lightsabers is cool. Also makes the Ep.1 trailer better than MANY films I've seen. They should have kept that music and pacing for Yoda's warning...

Timmer--what an interesting De Palma story about The Fury. Who knows? I'm with Marian that The Fury is not only one of Williams' best but that it works very well in the film. There are so many instances of music perfectly matching a screen image that I'm not going to even start listing them.
However, the topic on composers capturing vs creating lead me once again to thinking about just what a composer is trying to accomplish when he writes a cue. The Razor's Edge was on TCM this week and I caught part of it and with every new cue I kept thinking what is the function of this music, just why did Newman write it like this, what's the effect it has on me, how does it match or enhance what's going on visually? In trying to be that analytical about it, I often found myself out on a limb with no answers at all--sometimes listening to the music didn't seem to be doing anything for me but getting in the way of my getting other information!! It was a very odd experience.

Oh my god, how could I forget one of the very, very, very best:"High Wire Stunts" from Jurassic Park. Perfect, although there are many brilliant spots in that score, e.g. the sequence where Laura Dern escapes to the bunker, and those mentioned above. Or those string notes when we see the torn fence.

Pino Donaggio told SOUNDTRACK! magazine that Williams was foisted on THE FURY by the studio, and DePalma would rather have had Donaggio. I don't think Donaggio would have done a "better" score, however.Donaggio also said that DePalma wanted Herrmann for CARRIE, but of course, the composer died. After that, Donaggio said, it came down to choosing Donaggio -- or Williams. (Probably considered him because Williams was fresh off JAWS.)
I wonder what kind of score Donaggio might have written for MISSION TO MARS.

On top of my head now:1. Reflection (Days of Thunder) - Really brings out the evening sunset feeling in me. Always play it when I'm down.
2. Memories (Top Gun) - The saddest cue that I have in my collection.
3. Hummell Gets The Rockets (The Rock) - The main titles really suit the sombre rain scene.
4. Skiing with Elektra (TWINE) - Perfect to depict the snow mountains. One of the beautiful cues of modern film music that has been unreleased.
NP TWINE unreleased music.

I have a lot of them so HANG ON!!!!The one that ALWAYS comes to mind first is OBSESSION! Two sections particularly;
1)- When the the caption comes up on screen that it's fifteen years later. That music just TOTALLY sums up what is being felt in that scene: The passage of time, the sadness of Michael, The chill in the air (Which, I've always felt, was musically portrayed by the quiet timpani), even the trees gently swaying in the breeze! The other was as Sandra was in her parents old room and those sublime women's voices sighing nostalgically! Let us get a complete legit release of THIS!!2)- The main title from Hoosiers. Actually, the entire score is PERFECT, but the main title sums up the whole movie.
3)- Star Trek 2 - There's one section in particular. It only lasts about 9 or 10 seconds but it is INCREDIBLE!!! It's that shot of the Enterprise leaving the Genesis planet and that music behind it is PERFECT! I can't explain it, but it's perfect!

4. ALL of Cocoon!! Horner will NEVER top THIS!
5. ALL of the Ghost and Mrs. Muir!
6. Norman's Bedroom sequence from Psycho (Amongst other scenes!)
7. Jason and the Argonauts: when the skeletons are emerging from the ground.
8. ALL of Rudy.
9. All of Jaws 2
