Varese or Silva? Which is the preferred version to have?

Silva, because they just re-printed it, and therefore it's much easier to find.

Besides, it is the complete score, as far as I know, and you can program out the stuff you don't like (some say the Varese is the better overall album -- I don't however, mostly cuz I never heard it).

NP -- The River Wild, Goldsmith

Funny you brought this up. I was just listening to Supergirl in the car this morning. Although I've never heard the Varese, I can say that the Silva is very good. I also believe it's the complete score. It's about 78 min. Worth the money.

I have both and whenever I'm in a Suprgirl-listening mood I grab for the Silva. It has everthing that's on the Varese plus everything that's not.

Not all of it is top drawer... the electronic zings and whooses obliterate the End Title vs. the on on the Varese, HOWEVER, the Varese doesn't have the spacious and majestically sparkling closing phrase on trombones and trumpets as heard in the final shot in the movie. The Silva is a mish-mash if listened to from start to finish but the moments (I love The Vortex) are what will call you back to this score.

I do wish that Goldsmith had gone lighter on the synth effects for this score. They come across as silly sometimes and sabotage some of the effort Goldsmith obviously expended on his writing.

I haven't listened to my Varese copy in years, but I understand that it's a bit different in spots -- I can't remember what or where. I don't just mean it's shorter, I mean I heard there alternate bits on the Varese album. However, the Silva is absolutely the one to own, if given a choice. It's one of Goldsmith's biggest and busiest.

I don't have either of them, but isn't there a version with and one without electronic sounds or something like that?

Marian, I'd get the Silva release if I were you. I've had that cd for about 3 years now, and it's still one of my most adored Goldsmith scores... though there aren't too many I don't adore.

Don't let the electronics scare you away... They are complimentary. Besides, it's Goldsmith! It's how he does things. The score marks an important period in Jerry's career and is a definite must have.

FYI, The Silva editon contains the score AS HEARD in the film, The Eletronic are part of the score proper if anyone cares.

Silva are repressing this score. It's very enjoyable, especially the flying sequence, it's beautiful!

I didn't want to say that they added electronics that weren't there originally. I recall that I read they were removed or dubbed down for the first release.

I got both. Prefer the Silva one.

    Oh, Rocco,

read your liner notes in the Silva edition and you will find the what and where of the alternated cues.

I used to have the Varese LP and I do own the Silva release now.
I'm not sure, but I think that certain cues on the Varese are a different recording, not just the same recording with the electronics removed. Overall, I probably prefer the Silva album because it is clearly the more comprehensive one.
