Who's got em? What're they like? I don't need COMA/LOGAN'S RUN -- I think -- but I intend to pick up THE LAST RUN/WILD ROVERS. Anybody know if there's extra music on either release? On WILD ROVERS, I was thinking there should be an extra cue that was on the MCA LP rerelease, but not on the original MGM LP. Can't remember its title, I've never heard it (except maybe inside the movie, which I mostly disliked -- taped it off cable, but decided not to keep it. Although Goldsmith himself called it "a beautiful film, one of Blake Edwards' best." In turn, asked about his collaboration with Henry Mancini, Edwards pointed out he'd worked with Goldsmith this one time, and really loved what he did for the movie. He didn't explain why Mancini didn't do it, but Mancini was hardly known for Westerns at this time. Studio politics, no doubt.)

    FYI,

For a variety of legal and publishing reasons, Chapter 3 can only issue these releases from the MGM Record catalogue in their orignal form. In short, they can't add any additional music, period.

In the case of both THE LAST RUN and THE WILD ROVERS, they aren't the soundtrack recordings, but rather are re-recordings done for album release.

I hope this clears this matter up.

Well, I made a very good sounding CDR of my LP of THE LAST RUN, and I also have COMA on LP. I think maybe I'll steer clear of these re-releases.

I wonder what they sound like compared to the LP versions. Personally, I like the sound of vinyl.

Whatever, I hope that LOGAN'S RUN has better sound than that hideous LP. For a comparison listen to the score on the DVD, infuriatingly not isolated. The sound is so rich and full unlike the LP which sound as if it were recorded with a string and two tin cans.

Well, I'll surely get Coma and Logan's Run. They're on one CD? Then what's the third one? At least, I believe I can remember that there were 3 albums to be released soon, and I think I was especially interested in two of them. And The Last Run/Wild Rovers was not among them, 'cause I don't know it.

    Was it The Dirty Dozen?

It's funny that Chapter III is rereleasing all of these titles, as I recently (not that recently) got an A+ sounding LP conversion of Westworld (which really only has 3 good cues, the rest is odd "theme park source"). I wonder if it'll sound as good as this.

Here is the latest listing from CDNOW, due July 11:

    COMA / LOGAN'S RUN
DARK OF THE SUN / GUNS FOR SAN SEBASTIAN
THE DIRTY DOZEN / DIRTY DINGUS MCGEE
    LAST RUN / WILD ROVERS

I guess of these, I would like to get the COMA / LOGAN'S RUN one, just because I never actually owned LOGAN'S RUN on LP or CD. As for WILD ROVERS, I already have it on the Memoir cd (MOIR 601) which also included THE GREAT TRAIN ROBBERY.

I'll also get that one, because I liked both scores in the respective movies, but have neither on CD (and I don't have score LPs).

So, where's the re-release of Great Train Robbery!? Complete if possible - this score deserves it!

Good question, because I don't have the official release (out of print). But there's plenty of score in the movie, and every single note (except the single note when we first see a glimpse of the gold during the prologue) cries for a release.

The limit for reuse fees is 20 years, right? If so, then FSM could do it. Still, as they tend to release only scores that haven't been available on CD before, I don't think we can hope for it. What about the rest - Varese, Rhino, Silva, Intrada!?

THE GREAT TRAIN ROBBERY was recorded in London with the National Philharmonic Orchestra so an expanded release could be possible unless there are some legal restrictions. By the way, pick up this under-rated movie on DVD. The score (with tons of unreleased music) sounds absolutely spectacular.

FYI, Other then one chase cue, the LP of THE GREAT TRAIN ROBBERY pretty much contained the entire score to the film, as a matter of fact I seem to recall that one of the cues one the album isn't heard in the film version of the film. It was a fairly lightly score movie.

What isn't there seems to be a couple of short cues under :30, and one cue that underscores a intense chase that ends with a young man being killed. Now that would be nice to have, but the current version IMHO is pretty damned complete.

Has anyone here sat down and figured out what isn't on the album EXACTLY?

    Just wondering.

The movie is one of my favourites. When I watched it for the first time, it turned me into a Goldsmith fan. I just recently got the DVD. And yes, the score sounds spectacular!

Ford, although it's good to hear that the album is nearly complete, all those short cues and the chase music you mentioned are all great, too.

Well, there's the Clean Willy's escape from Newgate prison, clean Willy's climb up the side of London Station, all the solo guitar arrangements of the main theme accompanying the bedroom scenes with Connery and Down, the raid on the brothel, Clean Willy's death (hmmm, do I sense a pattern?), the train's departure from the station, the meeting in the graveyard with train guard, and last but not least those glorious tongue-in-cheek cues to accompany the shots of the key copies as they are placed in a velvet-lined box. I'm pretty sure there is more but I can't think of it right at the moment.

It might be of interest that the chase music
is easy to record off the video and except for some background noise (which adds some
excitement to the music) is pretty good.
Also adding the conversation between the
wife and Connery about building materials
was fun to add to a CDR of the Score.

Of course I,m talking about the Great Train
    Robbery.

Actually, I've just begun to do that - recording the score from the DVD. In the first half of the movie, there's much dialogue during the scored sequences, but later parts often have only some minor noises.

I guess it is true, since I received an email from CDNOW saying that as well. However I think it was only the "Last Run/Wild Rovers" disc that was pushed back. Well, that was the only one listed as such.

Now I have to wait to get it, X-men, Jaws and Coma/Logan's Run. I guess an extra week isn't too bad. But it better not take much longer than that. Especially after all the other delays.

All four titles were featured in an ad in the July 10-14 Streetdate from my store's distributor, Valley Media. However, when I placed the order with our rep, I was told that they hadn't gotten them in yet.

Does anyone know any details as to the liner notes? Are the booklets just going to have track listings or something more?

Shaun, for people like me that don't own the previous releases, it is pretty frustrating.

I've already pre-ordered mine from Barnes and Noble. I guess I'll get them some time, assuming that Chapter III does decide to ship them eventually. (Just a side note, Barnes and Noble gave me an expected ship date of August 12 )

    These discs better be perfect!

Well, if they used the same masters of Logan's Run that Bay Cities did, don't expect Logan's Run to sound "perfect", unless they've managed to pull off a minor miracle. Coma, Wild Rovers and Last Run should sound fine though.

    SPOR's right:
Unfortunately, Logan's Run's sound quality is nowhere near perfect - still tons of tape hiss and a small mag wow effect in the last track. The rest are fine, though. Last Run may not appeal to all because of its pop sensibilities at times.

    Sean:
I haven't listened to the "Dirty Dozen/Dirty Dingus Magee" disc yet, but Guns of Navarone is an exciting Morriconne score.

Shaun, maybe you are feeling frustration, because these are the actual CDs. And not LP' or home-made CD-R', which didn't you say yours are?

Either way, I guess you are right, CDNOW just now sent me yet another notification
email, and now it is the 25th.

Sheesh, just how long is Chapter III going to take to get these CDs out? Considering how long they have planned this release, you would think they could get off their butts and do it.

The only one of these I have on original CD
is Coma. The rest will update my CDR,s from
Lps. Still think I will hang on to my lps
    however, love those big covers.
Maybe there is a delay because they go to the
    same maker as FSM.
If Wild Rovers and Last Run are rerecordings
then the original tapes could still be out
there, go get,em Ford or FSM
