I haven't heard much about the score to this film. Has anyone purchased this yet? I am encouraged by Travolta's remarks that he left the Scientology subtext out of the picture and went straight for an old fashioned sci-fi adventure. Any thoughts?

Overall, not bad at all. The main theme is big and heroic, but not memorable, and the action-orientated cues, and there are plenty, sound very similar to his other big studio score -- RONIN. If you liked that then it's worth picking B.E. up too.

    Steve's Rating: ***/*****

Well I agree and disagree with Steve.
It's true the score is'nt bad and has a good heroic theme. A theme that IS memorable, since it was the theme that got me to get the score in the first place, I hummed it alot after I heard it in the trailer. There is also a good secondary theme.
And there are plenty of action cues, tracks 15-26 are the best of theme. But other than there use of strong purcussion; sound nothing like or much better than Ronin. Ronin was very boring while this is alot of fun.
I admit the start of the score is a little slower and harder to get used to than the 2nd half. But there are a good number of highlights in the 1st half. Everything in the 2nd portion is really great.
The score is 48min long. With really only one terrible track.

Dantoris was soooo jazzed about Elia Cmiral scoring this film, I wish he was around right now to comment on it, if he's seen the film/heard the score.

Rocco - What do you mean by that?

TimT - Which would be the "one terrible track?"

    I was refferring to track 14 "Pyschlo's Top 40"

My guess is, that theres a part in the movie where we hear the Alien's music...
So... of coarse it's like nothing we've heard before. It's so bad or wierd, that you could actually believe something is wrong with the CD. Before I heard someone else comment on that track I was kinda nervous about that.

It would be funny if John Travolta composed this himself :-D

I'll agree with Tim there. Money, and my ears, could have been saved by leaving "Psychlo's Top 40" off of the album.

But the rest is alright though.
I have no idea why it's compared with Star Wars, have you seen Varese summary?
