Hello, I am considering getting a copy of Howard Shore's "The Silence of the Lambs." It's my favorite movie, and I always liked the music to it. i was wondering if anyone else had it, and if so what they thought of it....

INCREDIBLY difficult to listen to...very dark, deeply disturbing...I can never take too much of it an any given time...a testimony to Shore's incredible work on the film. It is not for those with glass nerves or a weak heart...

REGARDING BROUGHTON'S LOST IN SPACE: "The Portal starts off sinister but emerges as one of the only gentle upbeat moments of the score, with a gorgeous little tune for some unidentifiable bell-like instrument. It's just a shame this didn't appear at any other time."

If memory serves, it was recorded with the Graunke Symphony in Munich -- hence, it's a nice long disc. Like it or not. I don't particularly like it, but I respect the hell out of it. (I don't want half my face bitten off, so I'd BETTER respect it.)

NP: THE BIRTH OF JAPAN (Akira Ifukube) (two and a half hours of score! The Japanese really do put us to shame at times.)

perhaps even darker than Se7en, which I thought was pretty dang dark.

you didn't ask fro Shore recommendations, but I'll give some anyway, cuz I liek to force my opinion on people:

I'd go instead with Shore's The Game, again it's dark, but not as distrurbing.
And of course, the very best Shore score?

I don't really see how anyone can characterize this score as "boring." "Difficult," yes.

I always found the music to be darkly beautiful. It has a bewitching quality to it that gains it respect even from people who don't like it.

When I would play it at the record store (or "Looking for Richard," for that matter, another great Howard Shore score) many people browsing in the classical section would come up to me and ask about it.

I think this score is fantastic, and a great listen (I think the score is pretty much complete at around fifty-seven minutes), but then again, I'm a big Howard Shore fan, so...

Someone called "Silence of the Lambs" boring? Must be deaf, poor fella.

Anyway, I agree with Swashbuckler. It's a very dark and disturbing score. Perfect in the movie (which is one of the greatest suspense movies I've ever seem). But it's no easy listening at home...

THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS made history by being the first movie since IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT to score what's considered the "top five" Oscars: Picture, Director, Actor, Actress and Screenplay (adapted, in this case, from the novel by the estimable Thomas Harris.)

It also made a kind of history by winning every single Oscar it was up for, except for one: the film editing by Craig McKay.

Awards THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS was NOT nominated for:

    Cinematography - Tak Fujimoto.

    Production Design - Kristi Zea.

    Original Score - Howard Shore.

Something's wrong with this. The laserdisc of LAMBS includes an alternate sequence (the hunt for the head in the garage) with, and without, Shore's music -- you can imagine how vast the difference is. Shore has NEVER been nominated for an Oscar, and in at least three cases, SILENCE, SEVEN and BIG, this is completely grotesque. I'm getting irritated just thinking about it.

(I also feel mad for Tak Fujimoto, who also shot -- beautifully -- THE SIXTH SENSE, and didn't get nominated for that one either.)

    Hi, Swash...
Yes, to me the score is boring to listening on its own, but very effective in the movie.
Just a personal task, I guess. 90% of my "always on cdplayer" scores are more adventure/romantics ones.

And JJH, my CGI friend, I once had Big in a promo format, good sound, and pretty rare, I think.
    Hugs

Re Looking for Richard: I recently saw this cheap at a local record store (I find it great that I tend to spot score albums in classical stores these days), but I didn't get it, because I've never heard it - I unfortunately missed the film on TV just two days or so before I saw the CD. Should I get it in case they still have it?

NP: Sinfonia antartica - gets even better with every listenig session. In fact, I was just looking for this one when I saw the Richard disc...

JJH: I don't have the BIG bootleg, but I know it exists. One cue was rerecorded on the wonderful Varese album conducted by John Scott in 1988. Pretty much all the music on that one has either been officially released or booted by now ... I'd love to have Scott's SHOOT TO KILL.

ABSOLUTELY pick up "Looking for Richard," whatever you think about "Silence of the Lambs."

    An amazing score.

Thanks, Josh, I'll try to get it. Re Silence of the Lambs: I can't comment on this one, it's been a long time since I saw it and I can't remember anything about the music (may even have been before I got into film scores).

    NP: Sinfonia antartica
