Any word on who's doing this? The IMDb and the official site are both mum. As a Clint Eastwood picture, one is tempted to assume it'll follow the same post-UNFORGIVEN pattern: theme by Eastwood, score by Lennie Niehaus. Except I don't think the studio will really accept Niehaus this time, nor do I think Eastwood will want to compose the sort of theme SPACE COWBOYS is likely to require. Eastwood is big enough to insist on Niehaus if he wants him, and he is nothing if not loyal, BUT, I just don't see Lennie Niehaus coming up with the kind of score this movie will require.

    Thoughts? Facts? Anyone?

I've seen only pictures from this movie, but I'd be interesting in hearing a George S. Clinton score. I think he's underrated.

    Rocco,
I was thinking the same thing. Niehaus is as you describe James Newton Howard, but to a less musical degree. Actually, his entire Absolute Power score was based around the "bleeding synth throb" from Waterworld. Weird. Anyway, I'm sure Eastwood will stick with Niehaus, because that's exactly what I don't want (just as I didn't want Zimmer on Gladiator or Horner on The Perfect Storm). I guess I'm paranoid, but it seems as though the film music world is against me (and others who appreciate good music in films). I can't be Charlie Brown forever! Throw me a bone! (NOTE: PLEASE DO NOT READ like Dr. Evil; the phrase was around before Austin Powers)

    Shaun

NP---Battlefield Earth (I really want to like this as I really loved the Ronin score, but with each listen it becomes more and more cheeseball; and what's with the freakin' "dagger" sounds again? Elia! COME UP WITH A NEW SOUND!)

The Controller asked me not to tell you, Rutherford, but since I'm off the medication, I can tell you frankly: yes, we HAVE planned it that way. We ARE specifically working to ruin YOUR moviegoing experience. Zimmer on GLADIATOR, Horner on PERFECT STORM -- we sketch these things out YEARS in advance. My part in it is largely coerced by the stuff they put in my arm most mornings, but they forgot today, so this is why I can tell you the truth.

Among the things you have yet to look forward to this year: Goldsmith's HOLLOW MAN will be rejected at the last second in favor of a synthesizer score by Mark Isham; Williams' THE PATRIOT will be rejected at the last second in favor of a synthesizer score by Mark Isham; and Michael Kamen's X-MEN will be rejected at the last second in favor of a synthesizer score by (here we sucker you!) Eric Serra.

Things to look forward to: The next James Bond movie will star Chris Tucker as 007. The score will be by Hans Zimmer, Mark Mancina, Harry Gregson-Williams, Rupert Gregson-Williams, John Powell, Trevor Rabin, Fiachra Trench, Lolita Ritmanis, assorted others, and Don Davis (pinch-hitting.) Directed by Michael Bay.

    Enjoy your summer!

Nothing wrong with Zimmer and Horner scoring Gladiator and Perfect Storm respectively. Frankly I think they're the perfect choices for these projects. I for one am looking forward to whatever Goldsmith, Williams, Arnold, Burwell, Tom Newman, Silvestri, Rabin and Kamen no matter how lacking, lazy or crazy loud their work is. To me Eastwood should pick Ennio Morricone for this project all he has to do is listen to Mission to Mars. As for Niehaus, he's done wonderful work in the past but this project isn't right for him. I maybe wrong but..where's Jerry Fielding when you need him.

    I don't care, Rocco.

I'll be spending my summer drinking Mint Julips, reclined in my most comfortable chair, watching Turner Classic Movies giving me the greatest Classic flicks from the M-G-M Library.

Go have your future, dim though it may be.

    I'm WALLOWING in the Past!

    YEAH!

Wallow away, bud, but don't try telling me you're not going to be tempted by SPACE COWBOYS at the very least ... I still remember when you wrote how you went to see ARMAGEDDON and you loved it because (rough quote) "it was FUN, and I LOVE FUN!" You'll be enticed away from AMC, bit by bit, piece by piece ... there'll always be TOO MANY things you'll need to see ...

Brother, just to make ME happy, promise to go to GODZILLA 2000 when it's playing in theaters? I'd love to see your reaction. (I finally responded to your RODAN post, by the way.)

I forgot to make it clear, Timchanter (and after this, I go to sleep): SPACE COWBOYS is about a quartet of aging astronauts -- played by Clint Eastwood, Tommy Lee Jones, James Garner and Donald Sutherland -- who are called out of retirement to save the world. Eastwood is directing.

Clint asked Sean Connery to come aboard, but he wasn't interested.

Of course, the question is, will this film attractive a large audience, given the age of the actors. I think of them all, Tommy Lee Jones is the youngest, and he's what . . . like, 52 or something?

Personally, I'll be in the theater to see it, and I'm 21. I'd see a movie with any of those four you mentioned before I'd even THINK about paying to see a film with Ryan Phillipe or Will Smith.

Rocco! The truth revealed at last!

Hey, remember 1993, anybody? That was the last great year for film music. Nearly every single score was good. Almost every film was good, too. It's a fact. Look it up.

dex: I hear ya. I personally think SPACE COWBOYS is bound to be a hit, age of the actors or no. At 70 years old, Connery's still packing em in, given the right vehicle; so can Eastwood and Jones. Garner and Sutherland are just the icing on the cake. My real question is how or whether Eastwood can pull this off. (He is said to be dismayed by the length of time the special effects work is taking -- as a director, he tends to know exactly what he wants up front, and doesn't need much time in capturing it. The effects represent something he knows nothing about. I still think this was an oddball picture for him to want to do in the first place, but it's one of the few this summer I'm REALLY looking forward to. Niehaus score or not.)

(By the way -- hate to break it to you, Rutherford, but we've decided Goldsmith's THE KID should be rejected in favor of a reggae-flavored score by John van Tongeren.)

Rocco, you really know how to come up with the WORST possible composers! I just about crapped myself at John Van Tongeren! Good work, just don't make it true!
