All of you planning to get Arabian Nights (Jeron pay attention)
Know that the first run of the CDs that many stores are hold now has a glitch!
I had to write to JVC to get a replacement from a 2nd run.
Theres no telling which you're getting in the store. Unless they will let you open the CD.

The defective CDs have Bage and Black print on the CD itself, and Good CDs have Orange and Black print.
The packaging for both I assume are identical, since JVC didn't include cover art or anything when they sent the replacement disc.

If you already bought the defective disc, then email Varése's soundtrack department for the proper instructions.
BTW they replaced it for Free. So that might be a relief to know.

DISMISSED!

NP- Dinosaur- James Newton Howard (5/5)

Thanks for telling me it's defective. Guess I'll wait to get it. How is the score itself though?

NP: Dinosaur (Howard) 4/5 ... this is one that definatly might get upgraded to 5/5 with more listens. Great score.

This isn't really on topic with this discussion, but I can find a way for it to be related. There's such a thing as an overlong album, and it's in every single one of Varese's TV movie releases (which, miraculously, ALWAYS come to our store in place of feature scores like The 13th Warrior). Sometimes I'll settle for 45 minutes.

Just wanted to bitch,
Shaun

Here I've got to lock horns with you, Shaun buddy. (This pertains directly to the "complete scores" thread.) There may be cues you don't have time for, but other people might adore them. And vice versa. This is why we have "CD programming." I may as well adopt this as my official anthem: "ALL COMPLETE, ALL THE TIME!" (Insert registered trademark)

NP: KING KONG ESCAPES (Akira Ifukube) (complete, WITH EXTRAS! The Japanese put us to shame at times, and I don't just mean Mitsubishi, Sony, and Pearl Harbor)

Yeah, I was just venting a little. I'm just bitter over all of the great scores that get the 30 minute Shaft.

"30 Minute Shaft" -- what we have to look forward to if Varese ever gets around to doing a SHAFT album of David Arnold's score ... you're quite the prescient one, brother Shaun ...

I just got the CD the other day, and have emailed them, but haven't heard back. Would anyone know the email address at JVC to write to?

Here is the response I got...

"Thank you for your note.

We are very sorry for this problem. Unfortunately there was a manufacturing error which occurred at JVC (our manufacturer) during the run of the CDs.

If you send your mailing address to the e-mail address below (and reference ARABIAN NIGHTS), you will be sent a replacement disc as soon as they are available.

Once again, to quote the classic and oft-spoken line of apology, "We are very sorry for the inconvenience."

stoxey@jvcdiscusa.com

3 days later I had the replacement!!!

The good news is, I just noticed that I have received the reply from Varese this evening. About an hour after posting here.

As for the message sent. You know, that it is almost word for word what you wrote. Anyway, I wrote to the other email address, hopefully it won't take much time to get the replacement.

BTW, how was the replacement disc sent? Was it just the CD? Or did they send the entire
set of CD, inserts and case?

Regards,
Sean Robert Abbey

They sent me a disc with extra tracks, a 20 page booklet of liner notes, a hardback copy of the original stories and an autographed 8 x 10 of Jason Scott Lee.

Well, I was afraid that was the case. I have had CD' arrive that way before, and always
have had some problem or another. So I specifically asked them to send it in an blank jewel case.

If not, I will just send it back and get my money back. Since I bought an new CD, and expect the replacement to be new as well. Either way, there are too many other CD' I want to have to put up these kind of hassles.

A NYLON BACKING WITH A CLEAR PLASTIC FRONT THAT IS FLEXIBLE.

Anyway...

Why not just buy a jewel case and transfer the liner notes and back to the new case and discard the first CD??? Why ask for your money back?

Well, to each their own. "Why throw out the baby with the bathwater?" is my motto.

Maybe it's just me, but anytime I get CD' in these cheap sleeves, which it sound like what you are talking about. The discs were always damaged when I received them.

Anyway, I am not about to pay for an damaged CD. If that means sending the disc back, then so be it. I can do with out this score for now.

Sorry for the rant, but this stuff is an pain in the butt. And after waiting 3 months to get the disc, you would think it would have been tooken care of.

Regards,
Sean Robert Abbey

Well, the replacement disc came in today. And it was in an sleeve.

However, it was in perfect condition. I guess there is an first time for everything.

Anyway, sorry if I sounded rude or anal in the other messages. I just was an little ticked that after 3-4 months, the defective copies were still on the market.

One question, has anyone bought it, and received the "good version", or has everyone
received the "bad version" so far?

NP: Arabian Nights *****

Sean Robert Abbey

I assumed you've checked the CD for glitch already.
Getting the replacement was pretty easy, and quick.

Franz,

If you remember when you first asked about this score I told you there was a defect and to be careful about buying it.

Perhaps you can contact Varese about getting a replacement.

Personally, I'd return it to the store where you purchased it for a refund and order it from another vendor.

James

Yes, your warning did ring a bell. I imagined the defect line must have been withdrawn or sold out in the last couple of years. I contacted Varese and I'll see what they say about it.

WARNING TO ANYONE CONSIDERING PURCHASING THIS CD!!!!

Varese Sarabande has run out of replacement copies if you purchase a defective copy. As they claim they are discontinuing the CD, anyone who purchases the defective CD from now on will have to live with the defect in track 22. And it seems some of the defective copies are coloured orange as well as white, so that you can't spot a defective copy without listening to it.

Well I guess since they are about to discontinue the CD, theres no point in presssing it.

However, I just want to ask...and I should have said something long before, but has anyone had problems with alot of pops and crackling sounds in some tracks of Pavillion of Women? Like 55 seconds in track 18 for example.
