Upon first listening to this score album, the music sounds simmilar to the soundtracks Waterworld and Wyatt Earp, however JNH uses much more orchestral color and makes great use of African Choral chants, simillar to Disney's "Lion King", by Hans Zimmer. I highly recommend this one to James Newton Howard fans. What are some of your thoughts about this score?

To me it's a combo of Howard's best work, The Lion King and Power of One.

Yes! I definitely agree. This is a 5-star score if I've ever heard one. The wait was worth it, folks!

I agree with you on Howards best work, mixed with The Lion King and Power of One, but I'd add "The Land Before Time" into the mix too. Many of the lighter moments sound very much so like that score. Definate Horner influence there.

    The Land Before Time!?

You gotta listen to Dave,Alive and maybe Junior. Howards writes like that all the time.

I have to say, when I saw that long long spectacular trailer (the one without the dialogue), I couldn't tell WHO'D written it. Howard is a pasticheur at best, and this is probably what he's done here. When I saw/heard the trailer, I really couldn't tell if it was Horner or Zimmer, but I sort of assumed it was one of them (and could also have been one of the Media Ventures guys as a result).

I have yet to receive this score. Though I was wondering if any of the music from the trailers happens to be on the disc?

Not that I care too much, just wondering.

    Thank very much.

Yep, sabbey, tracks 1, 2, and 16, I believe, all contain music that was in one or more of the theatrical trailers.

As you can all guess I love this score, it has already become my third or fourth favorite James Newton Howard score. It sounds like Howard used pretty much the same instrumentation that he used in Waterworld and Snow Falling on Cedars, which is great.
When I first heard the music in the trailer I thought that it sounded a bit like Jerry's score for Congo, which makes sense because Lebo M provided additional vocal arangements for both scores.

This should be just about enough to hold me over until we hear Howard's next Disney movie, Atlantis. That one should be just as great.

So JNH will be scoring Atlantis? Awesome! I'm so pleased to see Disney finally branching out and using other Hollywood composers. Newman, Goldsmith, Mancina, and now Howard... this is great, especially after such a long period of Menken material. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed most of Menken's contributions - but it's nice to start fresh each time with something new.

Haven't heard the score but I thought that I would mention this about why I hate Disney.
Why the hell do that have to screw up a pefectly good film about dinosaurs by having all of them talk and have a cutesy-wutesy side-kick? I suppose to appeal to the kids.
That's why the kids of today are screwed up.
hope I don't catch heat for that last remark!

...Lonely, what did you expect? Something like Walking with Dinosaurs? This isn't a documentary, it's a narrative about the last days of the dinosaurs. How in the heck can you NOT have them talk? Sure, take out the speaking parts and make it a silent film... that'll make tons of money for sure.

Also, The sidekicks are added for comic relief... and yeah, it's mainly for the kids. But you know what? Who cares. It's entertainment and certainly not meant to be a 100% accurate account.

Why can't people enjoy films for what they are, instead of what they would rather them be? I just couldn't be happy if that's how I looked at every movie... especially Disney flicks.

You must have really despised The Hunchback of Notre Dame, which while it wasn't (again) a 100% accurate portrayal of the novel, was a good adaption of the story line for children and fun loving adults (and those caught in the middle, like myself). I certainly wouldn't want my child seeing Quasi and Esmerelda commit suicide at the end of the movie by jumping off the cathedral.

    Lonley Guy,

let me get this straight. You believe that Disney styled movies, like talking Dinos, are the reason kids of today are screwed up?

With all due respect Lonley Guy, do you read the stuff you actually write here?

After hearing James Newton Howards score for Dinosaur, I think he would be a better choice at scoring Jurassic Park 3 than James Horner.

As a very strong Howard fan, DINOSAUR is a surprise. Devoted JNH fans, like myself, who have listened to his experimentation with mood and atmosphere must find this to be an absolute delight. It's a real comfort to know that Howard still likes to compose memorable themes. Also great is the action music in DINOSAUR. Similar to Outbreak, It is good to hear his furious method of scoring action being done again.

...and Cmiral's Battlefield Earth is pretty good too.

Amen, I agree 100%. Maybe we should start a petition to Universal or Speilberg himself. Hmmm.....that's an interesting concept. I wonder how long it will be before someone actually does that? Well maybe not, but hey couldn't resist. Yes DINOSAUR is a wonderful score.
