this thread reminds me of a thread some spammer started once in te rec.music.classical newsgroup:

    It was called:
"Music to **** a turd by"

Okay, I'm done with the toilet humor, but that WAS a real thread.

But I think the most appropriate music here would be that music in BREAKOUT, I think in the Main Title, when you haer the trumpets play some extremely high notes...

there's never any consensus in that r.m.c. newsgroup, Mr Rocco.

and lately, for every serious question/ post, there are three spammers it seems. and racist spammers, too. it's terrible. I'd post an example, but then, I'd be just as bad as the spammer.

I'm also thinking of the 2nd Brandenburg Concerto of JS Bach's. Rumor has it a trumpeter actually died of a stroke trying to play those notes. For those that have never played a piccolo trumpet, hold your nostrils together and try to blow through them really hard; you're ears explode. that's the closest I can get to describing the feeling of playing one of those.

    but I digress....

If I would ever climb up on a horse, I would use all my time and effort STAYING there, much less having time to listen to film scores!

    But anyway:

"Escape from the Tavern"(?) from WILLOW
The Horseman theme from SLEEPY HOLLOW
Track 2 from ARMY OF DARKNESS
THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN-theme, of course, and BONANZA and any other western score...

...could be used to portray my silliness in trying to master a galloping horse.

Well, then what about: Best music for watching Thor trying to stay on a horse...

    • Overture - North by Northwest. Herrmann.
    • The Hunt - The Lost World. Williams.
    • Main Title - The Good, The Bad & The Ugly. Morricone.

For the original Horse question: Can't understand that I forgot the "Prelude" from Hook! Should be #2 in my list. "Ski Chase" from On Her Majesty's Secret Service would fit really well, too.

Another one - music to play while playing Unreal Tournament: Rambo - First Blood Part II. I even tried if there's a way to substitute the music on the game CD with Goldsmith's tracks, but I couldn't manage to do it.

NP: The Poseidon Adventure (Hmm. The Main Title would be fine for a horse ride, as well)

Actually Jeron is right. I was in the military for awhile and when I was stationed in Maryland there several people who thought Texas was a flat, dry, tumbleweed, cactus filled place. They were at a loss to explain why I didn't own a pair of cowboy boots and a cowboy hat. Hell I hate country and western. For horse riding music how bout:

SIR GUY OF GISBORNE AND THE ESCAPE TO SHERWOOD from Kamen's ROBIN HOOD

and several selections from THE WIND AND THE LION

THE SLAYERS ATTACK and RIDE OF THE FIREMARES from KRULL

Hey, it never came to my mind to ask here (really, why didn't I?), but what ARE the lyrics? The sound on Final Conflict is too bad to undestand anything.

And I never completely got the "Ave Satani" lyrics...
    Sanguis bibimus, corpus reddimus???
(We drink blood, we return the body??)

NP: Sinfonia Antartica (Ralph Vaughan Williams; I think this guy also does a lot of film scores, at least I've read the name "Williams" on several CDs, most of them called "Star Wars" of something like that)

The whole thing is an inspiredly sick parody of the Catholic mass (hence the subtitle on OMEN II: "A Black Mass")

Sanguis bibimus (misspelled and, hence, mispronounced "bebimus" in the score): "We have drunk the blood"

Corpus edimus: "We have eaten the body"

    Tolle corpus: "Raise the body"

    Ave: "Hail"

    (repeat)

    Ave Satani: "Hail Satan"

It makes more sense as music than as poetry.

The text of OMEN II is the same. The text of THE FINAL CONFLICT includes the repetition of "Adversus Christus" (Antichrist), Mortuorum (From Death), and a few other lyrics I've never picked up, frankly, because the album's mix is terrible. Roy Budd conducted a version of the Main Title, and listening to THAT, I finally understood that the word "mortuorum" was being used -- the LP and CD mix are so muddy, I thought they were saying "lorum" (chains).

Thanks for clearing this up. In fact, I got that "adversus christus" bit, although I only heard "versus christus".

Is there a way to re-master digital recordings to improve sound quality, as it is done with analogue recordings all the time? Final Conflict desperately needs sound improvement; it may be Jerry's best score, but the mix is terrible indeed.

For sound quality, I also wished this score would get a decent re-recording, but I fear that it couldn't stand up to the performance on the score album.

Timmer, I intended to let you know anyway, but I'm just listening to it for the second time, so I can't say much yet. But it really sounds very fine at the very least. Details follow. By the way, was that Scott of the Antarctic movie ever made, or is this symphony the only "version" of the film score? The booklet mentions the film origin of the work, but doesn't say what became of the movie.

    Marian,
Well, obviously this Film was about Captain Scott's ill fated British quest to be first to get to The South Pole (beaten to it by Captain Amundson, right Thor?! ),The film was made in 1948 and stared John Mills as Scott!,it's shown every 5-10 years on British t.v.,As far as I know the score has never been released in the form of a soundtrack, and indeed RVW's symphony is much expanded!

I can't really say much more than this Marian as I haven't seen the Film for many a year!
