Here I reiterate what I posted at mlw’s other thread http://www.moviemusic.com/mb/Forum1/HTML/002353.htmlFirstly, this is my PERSONAL rating of Goldsmith’s scores, based on mlw’s rating system.
1979 Two classic and very influential sci-fi scores, completely different from one another.

Tora! Tora! Tora! **1/2
Rio Lobo **1/2And now I rate the movies as a whole, based on mlw’s rating system.
1979 ALIEN is a truly classic movie.

Chinatown ****1/2
1973
Papillon **1/2
Shamus ***
Indict and Convict *1972
Pursuit ***
The Other *1/21971 THE LAST RUN benefited from a superb performance from Scott, excellent locations, a fine Goldsmith score, and an interesting ‘human’ story.
Wild Rovers *1/2
Escape From the Planet of the Apes **
The Mephisto Waltz ***
The Last Run ****
The Brotherhood of the Bell **1970 PATTON is one of the best screen biographies.
The Ballad of Cable Hogue **1/2
Patton ****
Tora! Tora! Tora! **
Rio Lobo *1/2There are 70’s Goldsmith movies I haven’t seen, and I also omit, generally, his television work, though a few tv movies have sneaked in.
The 70’s was certainly a fascinating period of Goldsmith creativity. It was during this period that Goldsmith cemented his place as a film scoring legend, in my opinion.

Wow... Daniel, I love the contributions you make and the insight with which you make them... and maybe I'm not one to say anything, but - do you have a job? You do some serious typing, and I'm not sure how I could incorporate that kind of leisure into my daily life! =DLOL... great info, though. I'm with Thor... gotta love the lists!

Sorry, this is going to be way off-topic, but re: that 2001 quote, could someone tell me where it occurs in the movie? I don't remember seeing it in the movie when I watched it on AMC.NP: The Phantom Menace (an ostinato in The Sith Spacecrat and Droid Invasion kind of remains me of an ostinato in The Bees Arrive from Goldsmith's The Swarm, but I think it's just coincidental.

What? Are you talking to me, Dr. Evil, or the others? If me, I didn't say it was a direct rip-off. Both the pieces are in 6/8 time. The Swarm ostinato has an eighth not followed by 4 sixteenth notes, while the Phantom Menace ostinato has an eighth note followed by 2 sixteenth notes and another eigth note. Then, both end with 3 eighth notes. The intervals are not the same, however.I made a .wav file conparing the 2 (under 5 sec. so I don't think there'll be any legal problems): http://www.auburn.edu/~koonrob/swarm-pm.wav

Kris:The quote is taken from 2010, not 2001.
It's the phrase (spoken by Dave, the astronaut from 2001 that disappeared and that will become significat in the sequel) that opens the movie when there is still nothing but a black screen.

mlw, what do you mean by "Super Fly Goldsmith"? Goldsmith things that sound like the Curtis Mayfield score? Goldsmith certainly did rock in the 70s, one of my favourites being the main title to Escape From The Planet Of The Apes. Are those steel drums I hear in there?NP- Julius Caesar. Is there a way to avoid the annoying clicking that goes on every time I touch the mouse? My hi-fi is in another room . Did you understand that?

In the mid 90s people used to refer to cool things as "fly", just like in the 70s when the term was added to things like the movie "Superfly". It has a myriad of other connotations that are beside the point. I just typed it for no reason. Goldsmith to my knowledge never seriously ventured into Mayfield's Superfly style per se (as Schifrin did), though he did do a lick straight out of Isaac Hayes' (You're the Duke! You're the Duke! You're A-Number Ooone!) Shaft, probably inadvertently in the first few minutes of Rambo First Blood Part II (Preparations, and the parachute drop cue-- those cool, or excuse me, FLY shuffly strings)[This message has been edited by mlw (edited 28 April 2000).]

Michael, didja download the theme from HAWKINS at DECONSTRUCTING GOLDSMITH? Not quite Curtis Mayfield, but as funky as Jerry ever got (less the repulsive main title from S*P*Y*S -- what the hell was he thinking? Well, it was a replacement, another of those ten-day wonders, I'm sure.)
