I just scored Jerry Goldsmith's "The Shadow" for $3.99 at my local used bin (also John Debney's "Sudden Death" for $0.99!!) and I must say I'm enjoying it! I don't know what all the negative hullaballoo I heard concerning this score was about. Aside from featuring a horn-theme in a minor key (oooh! THAT'S rare!) I really don't see anything in common with Elfman's "Batman." If anything it hearkens back to some of Goldsmith's earlier work. And it is DEFINITELY Goldsmith.

Anyway, definitely worth my four bucks! Chalk-up another one for the G-man!

I love this score very much. I enjoy Taylor Dane's song, but do we really have to have TWO versions of it? I would've liked a little more score, but when I wanna hear the missing tracks, I can just pop in my DVD. (Why couldn't it have been widescreen with an ISO score!?!?)

'ey, dex! (All it takes to be a member is to type too much. As I tend to spend my own days, and nights. Congrats anyway.)

I've mentioned this before, re: Taylor Dayne's "Original Sin": the song is kind of dopey on the surface of it, but you've GOT to love a lyric that dares to include the word "infinitesimal." It's another one of those wonderfully overproduced Jim Steinman numbers (he also wrote and produced a couple on STREETS OF FIRE and is allegedly putting together whatever the score for the Broadway BATMAN score is going to be)

I don't think that the SHADOW album is all that representative of the score, but it's better than nothing.

Wedge, Goldsmith's SHADOW theme has NOTHING in common with Elfman's BATMAN, as far as I'm concerned -- the creepier resemblance is to Goldsmith's STAR TREK: VOYAGER, which he wrote a bit later in the year ...

    P.S. DETROIT!!!!!!

I found The Shadow CD in a discount bin as well, and I almost passed it by because of all the negative comments that I had read from film score fans.
At the last possible second I changed my mind, and I am SOOOO glad that I did!

    I LOVE THIS SCORE!

By the way, Wedge...you are wanted over at JJH's thread called "I need something to eat"...Marian has been asking for you there.

Great Goldsmith score!!! It was actually the first Goldsmith I ever boought so it holds a special place in my heart. coincidentally, I bought this and Batman Returns at the same time. I think people are reaching a bit to draw comparisons between the Shadow and Elfman's Batman scores

Of course, you can't forget "Chest Pains," with that terrific percussion section that is sure to rattle the walls and wake the neighbors, IF played at the correct (read: HIGH!) volume.

Wedge - You just now found it? Spent over a year searching for it (including trips to near-by cities), and eventually found it for $13.99 at a Blockbuster Music.

Coincidence, surely, but as Doug Adams pointed out in his excellent article on Waxman's PRINCE VALIANT in FSM, Goldsmith's "Shadow Theme" is eerily similar to the "Mystery Theme" from VALIANT.

I don't have THE SHADOW, but from what I remember hearing in the film it would have to be one of my favorite Goldsmith efforts in awhile. Lots of good music in there.

Well, I for one love the score. It really fits into the whole "super hero" story. It's one of my all time favourite movies.

Only Goldsmith could have made me enjoy the film as much as I do!

The scene where The Shadow sweeps into the hotel and suddenly materializes at the top of the stairs with Goldsmith's music going full blast is a stunner.

    Bel366,

Another great scene. When the HOTEL materializes in front of The Shadow with the mysterious music box theme bursting into magical strings and wailing brass. Goldsmith's work for The Shadow was priceless and unreplacable. He made the special effects SOUND good.

This is one of my most wanted expanded scores of all Goldsmith's 90's work. The official release is atrociously incomplete and spotty.

So what is the deal with this....is it in print and just hard to find? Or is it out of print? In any case, who slammed this score with negative reviews? I was just playing this coincidentally and thought the score was fine. I've never seen the film, but I have seen a really great episode of Movie Magic that dealt with all the matte work done for the film and that stuff looked great.

I found the copy that I have in a bargain bin at a Musicland store. I really liked the score when the movie came out, but I was not about to pay full price after seeing the track listing on the cd. $4.99, on the other hand, was worth it.

The worst Goldsmith score this side of Powder. G doing Elfman's attempts at Herrmann (the first five notes) only in broad, boring harmonics and toilet-bowl-like whoosh noises is the last thing I want to hear, ever. A minor reboot to the word dismal. Did have a few seconds of cool percussion work.

mlw. As ususal you cut right to the chase. I don't agree with you in this case, though in nearly all others I ususally do. And since this score is not on your Goldsmith hit parade it would be on "that" side of powder (it predates that mushy Goldsmith).

For some of the best realizations of Goldsmith's mystic, oriental stylings you MUST check out the new Prometheus release of THE CHALLENGE. I believe it is much more up your alley mlw.

I saw it at a sci-fi con for $30 Seriously though, I feel like a lucky one when I say I've been collecting long enough to have aquired the score without having to hunt it down and "trap" it. It is a great buy, especialy the knife music. And yeah, I almost bought the DVD but the fact that it's not in widescreen ****ed me off enough to pass it buy. Why, oh WHY isn't DVD standardized YET?!!

The DTS DVD is fullscreen but authored at the now-demoted but superior 1536 kbps rate. Extremely rich and forceful. Get it if you value this music.

hey. I found a used copy of The Shadow at my local Hasting's store.

I would be willing to send it to someone, as long as I come out even on cost and everything.

there's also copies of Forever Young (though, one of those will be mine pretty soon) and Dennis the Menace floating around here, too.

Our friend forgot to add "In My Humble Opinion" at the end of his snobish and almost uncompreensive comments, as usual.

BTW, "The Shadow" is indeed a great score. Another Goldsmith's gem for the usual turkey. The album is very poor, I must say. IMHO, of course...!

    Thanks.
