If anyone's interested to know, Nic Raine is to conduct the RSNO in a programme of John Barry's music, concentrating on the Bond stuff, at Edinburgh on the 1st June. http://www.rsno.org.uk/edinprom.htm
I only found out about it yesterday, so haven't yet got a ticket, but I certainly intend to go.Pete

I detest the fact that Barry gets pigeonholed as "that James Bond guy". He's done plenty of other fab stuff. Like MARY, QUEEN OF SCOTS. Which I just heard yesterday.

You JUST heard it? I adore the version on MOVIOLA. Don't know the WHOLE score, though.I agree that Barry's done way more than the Bond scores, but he's done quite well with BORN FREE, DANCES WITH WOLVES and any number of others ... I don't think he's all THAT pigeonholed, especially since he hasn't done a Bond in thirteen years ...

Yeah... of course Barry's done more than Bond... I don't think there's any dispute or misunderstanding about that. Barry has "freed" himself from the "Bond Pidgeonhole" a long time ago (same as Sean Connery, who has also succeeded in freeing himself from the Bond image).

I just picked up yet another Bond album that Nic Raine had something to do with. I detested his Bond Back in Action CD for Silva--if his concert is going to sound like that, you're screwed. But I have to recommend Carl Davis conducts James Bond Themes with arrangements by Nic Raine--this was surprisingly OK for a pops album. Maybe Nic should give up the baton to his elders.NP: The Mystery of Rampo (Akira Senju)

Bond Back in Action is terrifc! It may sound a little different, that's because of the digital age.
Great work by Nic Raine! Kudos!

Darth--I'm glad you liked the CD but I couldn't get into it or say anything good about it to others. My dislike of this CD had nothing to do with digital sound but with the poor renditions. If you go back and listen to the tracks in the films that Raine is re-recording, you'll hear just how off Raine is--not just the tempos and energy, sometimes even the notes are wrong. But that's just my perception of it.NP: Cinemage (Ryuichi Sakamoto---I had no idea this was recorded live! Now that's a concert I'd have paid to go see)

I've decided not to buy anymore EMI Bonds until the new re-mastered ones come out.
Oh well, each to their own.posted 04-20-2000 01:15 AM PT (US)

If they are NOT expanded,I will NOT buy them! Some of the bond scores barely have any extra tracks to add, Such as FRWL,Goldfinger,MWTGG,Moonraker,Octopussy and AVTAK, But OHMSS and DAF are woefully missing some of Barry's best Bond music!
Thunderball could almost be considered complete if you add the double c.d. 30th anniversary collecters edition (an absolute MUST HAVE for any Bond fan!),YOLT is also missing some good moments too, like Bond's funeral (recorded by Nic Raine on Bond Back In Action) and a variation on'007'when 'Little Nellie' is being constucted!
NP : uuummmmm?...not sure yet?!,i fancy a bit o'Goldsmith......I think it'll have to be THE CHALLENGE!
