    Well,
the Discovery Channel's much anticipated show came and went. Very informative and clever with adequate special visual effects and interesting, if now amazing, music. For those who wanted a documentary type film about dinos, this surely was it. No Disney here baby, nooooooo, pure scientifically based drama.

I liked it, although the special effects weren't as well done as Jurassic or even Disney's upcoming, already bashed by many, film. Yet, as mentioned before, quite adequate.

So, what did you guys think? Liked it? Hated it? Didn't see it? Could care less? Let the debate begin.

Well Scott, I had some mixed feelings, predominately positive. The graphics were a bit uneven in quality, but I guess that's not so surprising considering the length of the presentation. My favorites were the various theropods (raptors, etc.). The animators have become quite skilled at modeling theropod movements and I love watching those guys running around.
Also good was the overall coverage of land, sea and air dinos. I had expected to be a bit more blown away by the images in general (Spielberg's T Rex still reins supreme), but it was a good documentory with some interesting ideas of prehistoric behaviors.

I liked it a lot. It seemed to center around the "not-so-popular" dinosaurs. I learned a lot about dinosaurs I hadn't ever heard of before. The score, I thought, was amazing, I will be buying it. I might even get the DVD if I get tired of watching the recording I made of it.

One thing though, I thought someone had said that it was narrated by Kenneth Branaugh? I missed the opening credits but the narrator I heard last night sure sounded like Avery Brooks, the commander of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Did they have him renarrate it?

Audacity, Good point about the narrator. Kenneth Branagh is listed as the narrator for the DVD at Amazon and I had expected him last night, which I would have prefered. This was a BBC production, I wonder if the same info was narrated with just a change in voice (can't imagine why) or if the the content was changed in places.

    Scorro and Audacity,

the film was actually a BBC, Discovery Channel co-produciton. So what probably happened was that they had Brooks do the American production and Kenneth the British version.

Does Kenneth Branaugh have an English accent or something? Maybe they were afraid us stupid Americans wouldn't understand a narrator with an accent.

I would have liked to hear Mr. Branagh inject some spirit into the narration; something like a heroic St. Crispin's Day pre-battle pep rally from "Henry V", before a clash of the sauropods and theropods!

Branagh's speaking voice is amazingly close to that heard in DEAD AGAIN, only with a bit more of a Brit lilt to it.

Saw CELEBRITY and found it phenomenal that he transformed himself into Woody Allen. It was genuinely scary at times. Interesting that Woody even told the press later that he couldn't reel Branagh in. (I'm sure that Allen secretly or overtly wanted Branagh to do precisely what he did, because Allen has certainly pulled actors and reshot scenes -- even entire films at times, e.g. SEPTEMBER -- when he didn't care for the actors.)

As long as this thread is still fresh I thought I should add that, after a partial 2nd viewing (without the commercials), I would give this documentary a very enthusiastic thumbs up. The creators achieved exactly what they set out to do, which is an almost photo-realistic wildlife 'study' of prehistoric life. It's an exceptional piece of work and a view into an incredible world.

I liked it a lot. I was so sad at the end, it made me feel more sorry for it's subject characters than most other documentaries I have seen.

All of you who learned something new by watching the movie, just keep in mind that it was 90% theory... luckily they tried to explain most of that in the commercial breaks.

But I did enjoy the movie thoroughly. I thought Brooks did a great job, though I'd like to hear Branaugh's version, which will probably be on the DVD when it comes out. (It'd be neat if they gave the option between the two on the DVD).

The score was pretty cool, especially the Ornithocheirus sequences. I'll be getting that when it comes out, too.

Geez. There has to be SOMEBODY out there that can create CGI dinosaurs that look at least HALF was realistic as the ones in "Jurassic Park" and "The Lost World." I've never laughed so hard in my life. Well, maybe I have: that would be when I heard Adam Sandler was being paid $27 million for his next movie.

It's one thing when the effects just come out bad, but it's another when they TRY to make them spectacular, knowing they have a low budget.

Perhaps they should've used stop-motion? For the most part, models still look much better than CGI.

Call me crazy, stupid whatever, I loved the show. It was exactly what I expected, and for all the speculation, it could have been exactly as they described. Besides, the whole point of a documentary is the content, not the razzle dazzle of special effects and such. Anyway, I enjoyed it and in the end that's all the matters. IMHO.

Hey, didn't realize what Walking with Dinosaurs is, until I visited FSM 10 minutes ago and read there about the DVD release (honestly, does anyone regularly visit the FSM site since they shut down the message board?). Stupid old problem with German title translations.

The documentary ran on Austrian television half a year ago or so, and I really liked it. I've been fascinated by dinosaurs ever since I can remember, and Land before Time and Jurassic Park also helped. The documentary was really interesting, although I can't remember much of it now (hell, I don't even know if I have seen all of the doc's parts!). The sfx were well done, but the movements looked so unrealistic that it was rather disappointing. I don't blame anybody for this, it just shows that while everybody can afford the technology to render cool dinosarus nowadays, you still need a lot of people working hard to animate the creatures. I also liked the music, I think. And the "making of" was really interesting. Unfortunately, Kenneth Branagh (one of my favourite actors/directors) of course couldn't be heard in the German version, so I had no idea that he was involved with this.
