What are your favorite moments in film scoring? I'm not talking about the music alone, but rather about those film sequences where the music fits so perfectly that you'd want to watch them over and over again.

    Here go mine:

    • Most of "The Fury" (scored by Williams)
    • Very much of "Much Ado About Nothing" (scored by Doyle)
    • "High Wire Stunts" and Ellie's Run from "Jurassic Park"
    • Main Titles from "Star Wars"
    • When Vader is first seen in the rebel complex on Hoth, and his theme pops up
    • The final Luke/Vader duel from "Return of the Jedi"
    • "Duel of the Fates" from "Phantom Menace"
    • The first flight sequence from "E.T."
    • The modified 20th Century Fox Fanfare from "Alien 3" (Goldenthal)
    • "The Enterprise" from "Alien" (Goldsmith)
    • The resignation music and subsequent statement of the Riders of Rohan theme in track "The Dawn Battle; Theoden's Victory" from "Lord of the Rings" (Rosenman)) - I still have tears in my eyes when I see it, even though the movie is quite disappointing.
    • "To The Stars" from "Dragonheart" (Edelman)
    • Main Title from "Captain Blood" (Korngold; yes, I know, this is mostly music, but it's still one of my favourite scoring moments)

Of the ones I can think of right now . . .

"Tie Fighter Attack" from Star Wars

"The Hijacking" from Air Force One

"The Desert Chase" from Raiders of the Lost Ark

"Hand to Hand Combat" from Jaws (personally, I would've titled this track "Smile You Sonuvabitch!")

    More later.

Great. Now it's happend. Now I'm gone completely mad!
But I'm just in the middle of making my complete "Alien" CD. Maybe I should name one of the tracks "The Enterprise"!?

I'm going to look for "Antartica" the next time when I'm at the library.

Oh, yes, I forgot one in my list:

    • The corpse in the elevator from "Dressed to Kill" (Donaggio)

NP: Just watched the LOTR trailer again.

Another one - two, actually - to add, scenes from one of my all-time favorite films.

    1) The scene in The Postman in which Kevin Costner and the kids gather on horses, preparing to head out. He gives them instructions on what to do, and they all take off before he does. He hurries after them and catches up, makes his way through the group to the front of the pack. The music builds and builds, then finally breaks into the main theme as we see (from over-head) the group split apart and head off in different directions. The combination of James Newton Howard's excellant music and those sweeping camera moves just comes together so perfectly.

    2) The scene that occurs immediately after, with the little boy, where he stands with his arm out, holding the letter. Costner starts riding towards him in slow-motion shots, as the music again builds and builds until hitting the main theme.

Two excellant scenes from one VERY good movie.

Well, we've dealt with this topic before, but it is always fun -

The prom sequence from "Carrie" - from the announcement of the King and Queen right up to the bucket of blood - Donaggio's music is perfect.

Gillian's escape from "The Fury" - great scoring by John Williams

The opening of "The Sound of Music" - the best opening to any motion picture, and Irwin Kostel's arrangement of Rodgers music is brilliant.

Cary Grant's abduction if "North By Northwest" (and almost every other scored sequence from this film)

The Art Museum scene in "Dressed To Kill" (and almost every other scored sequence in this film)

The birth of Christ in "Ben-Hur"

The realization of death in "The Sixth Sense"

    Countless others

Yes, I already realized this. I had a blackout, I really thought it was a new idea!

    And another one I forgot:

    • The Rowing sequences from "Ben Hur" (Rozsa)

All of Bad Boys and Waterworld. Out of all the movies that I absolutely love both the movie and score, I think the scores for these two fit the movie the best.

The very beginning of The Mummy when Goldsmith's music plays over the shots of Egypt.

The Hummel Gets the Rockets sequence in The Rock, great action scene and awesome music to go with it.

I said this one before but it is worth repeating. The first time we see Travolta's character in Broken Arrow and his theme plays, great stuff.

The beginning of Lost in Space when Broughton's theme plays over the shots of the space station.

Star Trek VI, I love how Eidelman's music gradually builds to a cresendo, then the planet explodes.

Also anytime we hear the Main Theme in the Back to the Future trilogy.

And of course all of the Star Wars movies.

When Pee-Wee and Gina kiss in BIG TOP PEE-WEE.

Danny Elfman's music goes hilariously, wonderfully and appropriately over the top.

The most electrifying moment i remember when watching a movie is the port sequence from OBSESSION, when Cliff Robertson follows a small boat with a briefcase full of money in his hand, knowing that inside are the abductors of his wife and daughter. It is one of those moments which prove that Herrmann is the best.
Anyone can also admire the way music is placed in VERTIGO.A trully magnificent score!!

Herrmann's scores to both "Obsession" and "Vertigo", are for me, the ONLY reason to watch the films. The score overly compensates for what are two examples of rather lackluster narrative. I simply didn't care about either one (Robertson/Stewart) of their obsessions. YAWN! Incredible scores, though.

Yes that one's also fantastic, of course.
I had the chance to see "North by Northwest" on the "big screen" last year. It's been one of my favourites since I first saw it (only some years ago), but it still was SO MUCH better that time!

NP: Eine Alpensinfonie (Richard Strauss; Berliner Philharmoniker/Karajan; fantastic)

I like Morris' beatific comprehensions of Mrs' Kendall's reading of Romeo and Juliet with John Merrick in THE ELEPHANT MAN

North's fascinating hard-as-steel limning of Jean Simmons' stand off with Olivier in SPARTACUS.

Corigliano's agitation and ultimate triumphant upsurge to that blazing release as Tom Dobb finds his love in the crowd at the close of REVOLUTION

Poledouris' clinching of ROBOCOP's Paradise Lost thematic in the walk through Murphy's former home, the memories flooding back. Poetry. Nihilism!

Goldsmith's unmatched comprehension of simultaneous bond and conflict between men in EXTREME PREJUDICE (true to Walter Hill movie form, the music really just drifts and wraps around the atmosphere rather than cements to one specific moment for me)

Fielding's sublime extirpation of seething rage built to the moment Pike Bishop yells "If they move, kill em!" in THE WILD BUNCH

a few that I can think of:

--the very opening of Fargo, with the car driving towards us, set to Burwell's doleful music.
--"Buffalo Hunt" from Dances With Wolves
    --"Battle of Hoth" from ESB
    - the entire ROTJ score. hey, for me it works throughout!
-- the action sequences of 13th Warrior are made that much better by Goldsmith's rousing score!

    and finally,

the music in Shawshank Redemtion where it revealed how Andy has escaped.

My favorite is the finale, when we see Tim Robins and Morgan Freeman embracing each other on the beach... Beautiful... Beautiful...

Marcia Gay Harden visits Gabriel Byrne after he arranged her to be dumped by Albert Finney in MILLER'S CROSSING: Carter Burwell starts the music the moment the door swings open, and the beautiful, melancholy theme rising as she says "You always have to take the long way around to get what you want, don't you?" One of this masterpiece's most important moments, and Burwell underlines it impeccably.

"Hospital" in Goldsmith's PAPILLON is impeccable. And I wonder if another "Hospital" cue he wrote, for the same director's PATTON, would have worked in the final film, after all. (They were probably wise to eliminate the cue, but it's a wonderful piece on its own -- Goldsmith comforted Schaffner, "It won't be lost forever, it'll go on the album.")

Not a scene, really, but Williams' interpolation of the Darth Vader theme into Anakin's theme in PHANTOM MENACE still knocks me out, especially the sweet, wistful End Title version.

I second Mr. Ware on EXTREME PREJUDICE, one of my favorite Goldsmiths. I'll add his masterful work on the scene in FIRST BLOOD -- called "First Blood" on the album -- where Stallone is talking to Trautman over the walkie-talkie and says (what else?) "They drew first blood, not me." Goldsmith also showed considerable wisdom in NOT SCORING AT ALL the climactic scene where Rambo and Trautman finally meet.

    NP: RIO CONCHOS (Intrada version)
