I am at the moment listening to JNH`s brilliant score to Snow Falling On Cedars.
The track called Tarawa is in my opinion the single best composition he has ever done. The score as a whole is one of his best as well. What I would like to know is what scene this track accompanies in the film (for those who have seen it).

movie played for only about a week here, so I don't know. I know: I'm very helpful.

but I'd also recommend his 'Redemption' from the Flatliners score. good stuff.

Flatliners is a great score! Some of the choral stuff reminds me of Edward Scissorhands. Thanks for reminding me of this great score.

That is a great moment in the score, but, personally, I don't think it is his BEST composition.

What about DAVE and the much-mimicked finale from ALIVE? Brilliant stuff!

Ethan Hawkes' character in this film falls in love with a Japanese woman and goes off to WWII where he fights and is wounded on Tarawa, an island in the Pacific the Marines invaded in 1943.

I`ve never been that keen on Dave, don`t know why, it just doesn`t do much for me. Alive is a good score, though the cd release could have been better. I think JNH`s best compositions are in the thriller and action genres, for example Outbreak (the complete one, not the Varese release) and Waterworld
Cheers for the info on the film, BTW Lou, did you receive my e-mail about the proposed trade? (I`ve been having trouble with my e-mail at Yahoo)

I agree with pietari on Howard's accelerating perfection in action/adventure films.

Now, in that respect, how is SNOW? I've seen this score rather cheap in stores, but have not bought it so far since Howard is a very on/off composer for me (I don't like his sentimental romantic stuff or atmospheric droning, but adore his ethnic sensibilities and action writing). Direct me.

If you don't like Howard's "atmospheric droning", then I don't think I would recommend this one. A lot of Snow Falling is more atmospheric than anything else, I myself love this score.

I don't agree with Pietari though, there are other cues be JNH that I would place above Tarawa.

    Escaping the Smokers from Waterworld
The Wagon Chase from Wyatt Earp
Grand Canyon Fanfare/End Titles from Grand Canyon
The last three minutes of The Belly of the Beast from Postman
    Helicopter Chase from Outbreak (complete)
Kimble Dyes His Hair from The Fugitive

Save for the entire Waterworld score which I am very fond of, I would put Tarawa in the top ten best JNH tracks.

And I agree with JJH, Redemption is a great track but I like "A Good Day to Die" from Flatliners better.

    Audacity,

I agree. I enjoyed "Good Day To Die" the most out of the Flatliners score. What a theme. Absolutely beautiful.

    Pietari,

If you enjoyed "Tarawa" from Snow Faliing On Cedars, you may want to check out "Fire" from Restoration. It is also outstanding.

ALL the cues from Restoration are good!

In fact, that's my favorite JNH CD.

I can't enough of that wedding music.
